INTRODUCTION: The collection and preservation of postmortem genetic material from recently deceased animals of rare and endangered species represent a critical yet underexplored avenue in conservation biology. While extensive research has been conducted on the human postmortem interval (PMI), there is a notable gap in understanding the postmortem preservation of germplasm in endangered species.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the dynamics of apoptosis in various tissues of the Yangtze sturgeon at different postmortem time points, and to provide a reference for identifying the opti

Shark species are among the most vulnerable marine fishes facing impacts from fisheries. To ensure the international fin trade does not threaten their populations, several species have been listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Appendix II. However, the lack of data on fin-to-body weight ratios makes it difficult to accurately estimate the biomass of harvested sharks based on their traded fins and weakens CITES enforcement. This study determines species-specific fin-to-body weight ratios for shark species caught by the artisanal f

We report a case of refractory infection caused by Mycobacterium marinum and Mycobacterium shottsii following a fish fin injury. The diagnosis was confirmed by acid-fast bacilli staining and metagenomic next-generation sequencing. This case posed challenges in diagnosis and treatment due to the simultaneous infection by acute and chronic pathogens, uncommon skin and joint symptoms, and multiple lesions involving deep fascia and intermuscular spaces caused by special pathogens. Ultimately, resolution of the lesions without recurrence was achieved after the thorough surgical debridement and exci

The effects of different concentrations of copper sulfate on diploid and triploid fin cell lines (named DIMF and TRMF, respectively) in Misgurnus anguillicaudatus were studied. The LC50 of copper sulfate estimated by an MTT assay was 268.39 in DIMF cells, and 311.54 μmol/L in TRMF cells, respectively. Activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in DIMF cells gradually increased as the concentration of copper sulfate increased (up to 200 μmol/L), and then gradually decreased. SOD activity in triploid loach fin cells, as well as glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) acti

Caligus fugu is a parasitic copepod specific to the tetraodontid genus Takifugu including the commercially important Takifugu rubripes. Despite the rapid accumulation of knowledge on other aspects of its biology, the host and settlement-site recognition mechanisms of this parasite are not yet well understood. Since the infective copepodid stage shows preferential site selection in attaching to the fins, we considered it likely that the copepodid recognizes chemical cues released or leaking from the fins, and/or transmembrane protein present on the fins. To isolate molecules potentially related

Pathological changes associated with the parasitic nematode Philometroides sanguineus (Rudolphi, 1819) are described for the first time from observations of infections in wild crucian carp Carassius carassius (L.) in England. The damage caused by P. sanguineus was influenced strongly by host size, parasite development and the seasonal migrations of female nematodes within host tissues. Male and unfertilized female nematodes located on the swim-bladder wall caused only minor, localized changes. In contrast, the migration of gravid female nematodes into the fins during autumn provoked an acute i

Recently discovered material has yielded new information on the pectoral girdle and fin endoskeleton of Gogonasusandrewsae (Frasnian Gogo Formation, Kimberley Region, Western Australia). These elements permit the first comprehensive description of the anocleithrum, cleithrum, scapulocoracoid, and lepidotrichia. New autapomorphies of Gogonasus include a square exposed region on the supracleithrum, an unusual knob-like process on the scapulocoracoid, a relatively small entepicondyle, and lepidotrichia with I-beam-shaped cross sections. Several poorly ossified regions on the scapulocoracoid and h

Dysregulation of the inflammatory response in humans can lead to various inflammatory diseases, like asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. The innate branch of the immune system, including macrophage and neutrophil functions, plays a critical role in all inflammatory diseases. This part of the immune system is well-conserved between humans and the zebrafish, which has emerged as a powerful animal model for inflammation, because it offers the possibility to image and study inflammatory responses in vivo at the early life stages. This review focuses on different inflammation models established in zeb

Synthetic hormones in wastewater effluents released into the aquatic environments may interfere with the normal endocrine systems of fish in receiving streams. Norgestrel (NGT) is a synthetic progestin widely used in oral contraceptives and frequently detected in wastewater effluents. In this study, adult female mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) were exposed to three environmentally relevant concentrations of norgestrel (NGT) (i.e., 3.6, 35.8, and 368.0 ng L-1) for 42 d, fin morphology, histology of the ovary, and reproductive behaviors were evaluated. The results showed that NGT at all three co

Many wildlife populations are declining at rates higher than can be explained by known threats to biodiversity. Recently, thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency has emerged as a possible contributing cause. Here, thiamine status was systematically investigated in three animal classes: bivalves, ray-finned fishes, and birds. Thiamine diphosphate is required as a cofactor in at least five life-sustaining enzymes that are required for basic cellular metabolism. Analysis of different phosphorylated forms of thiamine, as well as of activities and amount of holoenzyme and apoenzyme forms of thiamine-depen

Long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas) are rare visitors to the southern North Sea, but recently two individual strandings occurred on the Dutch coast. Both animals shared the same, unusual cause of death: asphyxiation from a common sole (Solea solea) stuck in their nasal cavity. This is a rare cause of death in cetaceans. Whilst asphyxiation has been reported in smaller odontocetes, there are no recent records of this occurring in Globicephala species. Here we report the stranding, necropsy and diet study results as well as discuss the unusual nature of this phenomenon. Flatfish are no

Cytotoxic T cell responses are crucial during infections and are well-characterized in mammals, however, their roles in teleost fish remain poorly understood. This study used a primary dorsal fin cell-based assay to investigate viral-antigen dependant cytotoxic responses in rainbow trout against the viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) IVb. The cell surface expression of the antigen presentation markers MHC-I and MHC-II were analyzed by flow cytometry in dorsal fin cells and splenocytes. Cytotoxic activity was analyzed by using dorsal fin cells stimulated with heat-inactivated viral hemor

The ecomorphological diversity of extinct elasmobranchs is incompletely known. Here, we describe Aquilolamna milarcae, a bizarre probable planktivorous shark from early Late Cretaceous open marine deposits in Mexico. Aquilolamna, tentatively assigned to Lamniformes, is characterized by hypertrophied, slender pectoral fins. This previously unknown body plan represents an unexpected evolutionary experimentation with underwater flight among sharks, more than 30 million years before the rise of manta and devil rays (Mobulidae), and shows that winglike pectoral fins have evolved independently in tw

Mammalian articular cartilage is an avascular tissue with poor capacity for spontaneous repair. Here, we show that embryonic development of cartilage in the skate (Leucoraja erinacea) mirrors that of mammals, with developing chondrocytes co-expressing genes encoding the transcription factors Sox5, Sox6 and Sox9. However, in skate, transcriptional features of developing cartilage persist into adulthood, both in peripheral chondrocytes and in cells of the fibrous perichondrium that ensheaths the skeleton. Using pulse-chase label retention experiments and multiplexed in situ hybridization, we ide

The 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico was the largest oil spill in United States history. Crude oils are highly toxic to developing fish embryos, and many pelagic fish species were spawning in the northern Gulf in the months before containment of the damaged Mississippi Canyon 252 (MC252) wellhead (April-July). The largest prior U.S. spill was the 1989 grounding of the Exxon Valdez that released 11 million gallons of Alaska North Slope crude oil (ANSCO) into Prince William Sound. Numerous studies in the aftermath of the Exxon Valdez spill defined a conventional crude oil in

Nectocaridids are enigmatic Palaeozoic animals with a controversial phylogenetic position. Previous hypotheses have placed them in their own phylum, chordates, molluscs (specifically cephalopods), or radiodont panarthropods. We describe here a nectocaridid, Nektognathus evasmithae gen. et sp. nov. from the early Cambrian (~519 million years) Sirius Passet Lagerstätte of North Greenland. Key specimens preserve paired, phosphatized arcuate structures consistent with preservation of a ventral ganglion, a feature characteristic of extant and fossil chaetognaths, including the amiskwiid Timorebesti

Anthropogenic noise is considered a marine pollutant by the European Union and can impact marine animals in various ways. Noise that overlaps in time and frequency with animal communication signals can interfere with communication and thus impact ecological functions mediated by acoustic signals, depending on how animals compensate for increasing noise. Our study investigated Lombard responses in long-finned pilot whales using sound and movement recording tags in an area with high anthropogenic pressure, the Strait of Gibraltar. We tested if pilot whales increase their vocal amplitude in respo

Human and animal cell cultures were evaluated for their susceptibility to two environmental toxins found as contaminants in human food supplies: aflatoxin B1, a hepatotoxin produced by the mold Aspergillus flavus, and saxitoxin, a paralytic neurotoxin produced by the marine dinoflagellate Gonyaulax catenella. Both toxins cause food poisoning in humans and other animals. The acute cytotoxicity of both toxins was measured and compared by inhibition of cell growth and by progressive cytopathogenicity resulting in cell destruction. Aflatoxin B1 was cytotoxic to all of the 11 primary kidney culture

BACKGROUND: The gene cAMP-Responsive Element Binding protein 3-like-1 (CREB3L1) has been implicated in bone development in mice, with CREB3L1 knock-out mice exhibiting fragile bones, and in humans, with CREB3L1 mutations linked to osteogenesis imperfecta. However, the mechanism through which Creb3l1 regulates bone development is not fully understood.
RESULTS: To probe the role of Creb3l1 in organismal physiology, we used CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing to generate a Danio rerio (zebrafish) model of Creb3l1 deficiency. In contrast to mammalian phenotypes, the Creb3l1 deficient fish do not display a
