BACKGROUND: Landscape structure can affect pathogen prevalence and persistence with consequences for human and animal health. Few studies have examined how reservoir host species traits may interact with landscape structure to alter pathogen communities and dynamics. Using a landscape of islands and mainland sites we investigated how natural landscape fragmentation affects the prevalence and persistence of the zoonotic tick-borne pathogen complex Borrelia burgdorferi (sensu lato), which causes Lyme borreliosis. We hypothesized that the prevalence of B. burgdorferi (s.l.) would be lower on isla

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Infectious and parasitic diseases transmitted by ticks, such as Lyme diseases, granulocytic anaplasmosis and piroplasmosis, have been frequently reported in Europe, with increasing attention to them as an emerging zoonotic problem. The presented study was performed to assess the distribution and the density of questing ticks in three regional parks of Emilia-Romagna region of Northern Italy, and to seek molecular evidence of potential human pathogens in tick populations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the period April-October 2010, 8,139 questing ticks were collected: 6

The total animal consumption of antibiotic and chemotherapeutic drugs in Sweden during 1980, 1982 and 1984 has been studied. The study also included coccidiostatic, antiparasitic and antimycotic drugs. The total animal consumption during the years mentioned was 66.1, 68.8 and 72.6 tons of active substance, respectively, and the amount of antibacterial drugs for therapy was 28.7 (43.4%), 29.1 (42.5%) and 34.1 (47.0%) tons, respectively. Tetracycline, penicillin, sulphonamide and aminoglycoside were the four major groups of antibiotics used for therapy of bacterial infections in animals. The con

Exogenous and endogenous sources of pathogenic Candida species and the likely routes of their intra- and inter-human transmission are reviewed. Study of C. albicans strain types from clinical isolates of the fungus has shown that, for each person who harbours C. albicans, the strain type or types at different anatomical sites and at different times is likely to be the same, although exceptions to this rule are not uncommon. Moreover, the population of strain types associated with infection is statistically the same as that isolated in the absence of infection, which emphasises the importance o

The nonindigenous Barbary sheep population (Ammotragus lervia) of the Sierra Espuna Regional Park (Murcia, Spain) suffered an outbreak of sarcoptic mange between 1991 and 1995, which contributed to a population decrease of 86%. This study presents the results of two population surveys conducted in 1994 and 1999 based on the fixed point and itineraries method (FPI) and the excrement count (EC) method, as well as data from demographic estimates and clinical observations conducted by the Regional Administration of Murcia. Results of surveillance for mange are given between 1992 and 1995, because

BACKGROUND: Gut microbiota holds a key-role in numerous biological functions and has emerged as a driving force for the development of diabetes. Diet contributes to gut microbiota diversity and functionality providing a tool for the prevention and management of the disease. The study aimed to investigate the effect of a dietary intervention with pistachio nuts, a rich source of monounsaturated fatty acids, dietary fibers and phytochemicals on gut microbiota composition in the rat model of Type 1 Diabetes.
METHODS: Male Wistar rats were randomly assigned into four groups: healthy animals which

4 patients with atypical pneumonia and a history of exposure to wild rabbits were found to have antibodies to Coxiella burnetii but not to the other organisms also commonly associated with atypical pneumonia. 10 (45%) of 22 snowshoe hares caught in the area where 1 of the patients snared his rabbits had antibodies to Coxiella burnetii. Q fever ought to be included in the differential diagnosis of pneumonia acquired following exposure to wild rabbits.

Lead encephalopathy was produced in immature Sprague-Dawley rats with an intraperitoneal (IP) injection of 60 micrograms/g body weight of lead acetate administered daily from the fifth day after birth. Macroscopic and light microscopic study of the nervous system, estimations of the blood-brain barrier permeability to proteins and brain water content were performed every two days thereafter. Lead levels in total blood, plasma, and several brain areas were measured at the same intervals by flameless atomic absorption spectrometry. Electron microscopic study of the cerebellum was done 2, 6, and

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder affects 20%-30% of those exposed. Clinical studies employ stringent inclusion-exclusion criteria, yet animal studies include the entire exposed population as the study population. We examined the effect of grouping prestressed rats according to magnitude of response on the statistical analysis of results.
METHOD: Response magnitude to predator exposure was assessed and used to group the animals into "diagnostic" groups. Two extremes were studied (clearly "maladapted" and clearly "well adapted" rats) using arbitrarily selected cutoff behavioral criteri

Seven hundred and fifty-eight serum samples from domestic and wild animals in Ethiopia were tested for leptospiral antibodies by the microscopic agglutination test. The following percentages of seropositivity were obtained: horse (91.3 per cent), cow (70.7 per cent), pig (57.1 per cent), goat (47.3 per cent), sheep (43.4 per cent), camel (15.4 per cent), and dog (8.3 per cent). All 54 samples from birds and wild animals were seronegative. Most of the positive sera exhibited reaction to more than one serotype and antibodies to serotype butembo were predominant in sera of the majority of the exa

The blockade of peripheral nerves carries a certain risk of unwanted complications, which can follow after unintentional intraneural injection of a local anesthetic. Up till today, the research of measuring injection pressure has been based on animal models, even though the histological structure of periphery nerve is different for animal and human population, so the application pressure which presages intraneural injection in human population is still unknown. As material in performing this study there have been used 12 Wistar rats and 12 delivered stillborns. After bilateral access to the me

Over the past decade, pandemics caused by pandemic H1N1 (pH1N1) influenza virus in 2009 and severe acute respiratory syndrome virus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in 2019 have emerged. Both are high-impact respiratory pathogens originating from animals. Their wide distribution in the human population subsequently results in an increased risk of human-to-animal transmission: reverse zoonosis. Although there have only been rare reports of reverse zoonosis events associated with the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic from SARS-CoV-2 so far, comparison with the pH1N1 influenza pandemic can

We consider continuous Prisoner's Dilemma games played in a spatial setting by group-structured populations. The evolutionary dynamics is driven by within-group individual-level birth and death events, and by group-level fission and extinction events. Within groups, individuals play well-mixed games, while groups play games on a 1-dimensional spatial grid against their nearest neighbours. Payoffs from individual-level games affect birth rates of individuals, and payoffs from group-level games affect group extinction and fission probabilities. It is well known that the within-group evolution by

Growth of Linognathus vituli populations following establishment at a point source was followed for 16 weeks on eight louse-naïve Holstein calves. Dispersal of lice from the point of infestation (withers) was monitored by examination of known louse predilection sights. Mean louse indices increased during the initial weeks reaching maximum mean values at 8 weeks post-infestation (p.i.). Subsequently, mean indices decreased, reaching a plateau that persisted through weeks 14 and 15 p.i. There was little movement away from the withers until 5 weeks p.i. Subsequently, numbers of lice on the wither

To model the spread of monkeypox (MPX) in a metropolitan area for assessing the risk of possible outbreaks, and identifying essential public health measures to contain the virus spread. The animal reservoir is the key element in the modeling of zoonotic disease. Using a One Health approach, we model the spread of the MPX virus in humans considering potential animal hosts such as rodents (e.g., rats, mice, squirrels, chipmunks, etc.) and emphasize their role and transmission of the virus in a high-risk group, including gay and bisexual men-who-have-sex-with-men (gbMSM).
