Magnetic resonance imaging in experimental Chagas disease: a brief review of the utility of the method for monitoring right ventricular chamber dilatation.

Chagas' disease caused by infection with Trypanosoma cruzi leads to a myocardiopathy that evolves from the acute to the chronic phase. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an important tool for monitoring cardiac morphology and function both in humans and in animals. In the present work, we present a brief review of MRI applications for the study of ventricular hypertrophy and dilatation of the right ventricle in murine models of Chagas' disease. Studies using MRI demonstrate an increase in right ventricular chamber dimension during both phases of infection, indicating that increase of the righ

Pharmacological Disruption of Sea Urchin Tube Foot Motility and Behavior.

The understanding of the molecular basis of sea urchin behavior and sensory and motor systems lags far behind that of many other animal species. To investigate whole-animal behavior pharmacologically, we first demonstrated that immersion in drug solution is an effective drug administration route for sea urchins, whereas oral drug administration was found to be ineffective. Although intracoelomic injection was found to be effective at administering drugs, it was also found that injection itself can disrupt normal sea urchin behavior. Using the drug immersion procedure, we demonstrate that sea u

Ototoxic effect of Burow solution applied to the guinea pig middle ear.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the ototoxicity of Burow solution as an otologic preparation. BACKGROUND: Burow solution has been used for years in the treatment of acute or chronic otitis externa and chronic suppurative otitis media. This acidic solution has antibacterial and antiedematous properties. Ototoxic effect of Burow solution has not been known, so the current study was designed to observe the ototoxic effect of Burow solution experimentally. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Experiments were performed in 32 young, male albino guinea pigs (weight, 450-550 g). Twenty animals in the experimental group we

Sternomastoid function during hemispheric suppression by amytal: insights into the inputs to the spinal accessory nerve nucleus.

The debate as to whether the sternomastoids receive ipsilateral, contralateral, or bilateral cortical innervation is based largely on the observation of stroke patients and, to a lesser extent, on animal experimentation. The variability of vascular lesions, the lack of pathology correlation in the early reports, and the differences in posture between humans and laboratory animals contributed to the controversy. We studied the function of the sternomastoid (SM) muscles during transient, complete left hemiplegia in 18 right-handed patients undergoing a Wada test. After injection in the right int

Methylprednisolone and vitamin E therapy in perinatal hypoxic-ischemic brain damage in rats.

To study the efficacy of methylprednisolone/vitamin E in reducing cerebral edema and improving the ultimate neuropathological outcome in perinatal cerebral hypoxia-ischemia, 40 seven-day postnatal rats were subjected to right common carotid artery ligation followed by exposure to 8% oxygen at 37 degrees C for 3 h. The animals were divided into groups. Twenty rat pups received an intraperitoneal injection of 30 mg/kg body weight methylprednisolone and vitamin E (100 U/kg) immediately following cerebral hypoxia-ischemia. Control animals received either no therapy (n = 10) or an equivalent volume

Right ventricular maladaptive functional and electrical remodeling in male Fischer rats during progressive pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Cardiac arrhythmias are suspected as a major cause of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH); however, the mechanisms underlying right ventricle (RV) electrical remodeling, arrhythmias, and SCD in PAH remain unclear. We investigated the mechanisms of increased susceptibility to SCD during progressive PAH in the Fischer CDF rat monocrotaline (MCT) model. Echocardiography, electrocardiogram, and cardiac catheterization were performed at 4 and 5 wk post MCT injection (MCT-4 and MCT-5 groups, respectively). Hearts were isolated and Langendorff-perfused, and changes in

Lateralized motor behaviour in the righting responses of the cane toad (Rhinella marina).

This paper reports a series of tests for fore- and hind-limb preferences used by cane toads, Rhinella marina, to assist returning to the righted position after being overturned. We confirm the strong and significant right-handedness reported in this species, which under certain conditions exceeded 90% right-hand preference at the group level. Toads were tested under a variety of conditions including horizontal and inclined surfaces, with and without the opportunity for the forelimbs to grasp a support, in order to assess the effects of different vestibular and proprioceptive input on the stren

The role of MicroRNAs in arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is a rare inherited heart condition with structural and functional abnormalities of the right ventricle. Microribonucleic acids (miRNAs, miRs) could be a solution in detecting ARVC earlier, more commonly, and in a less invasive way. AIMS: We aimed to systematically review the current knowledge about the role of miRNAs in ARVC. METHODS: Primary original research written in English assessing miRNAs in ARVC were included. Systematic reviews, meta-analyses, reviews, case reports, letters to editors, commentaries, conference abstr

Record-Breaking Pain: The Largest Number and Variety of Forelimb Bone Maladies in a Theropod Dinosaur.

Bone abnormalities are common in theropod dinosaur skeletons, but before now no specimen was known with more than four afflicted bones of the pectoral girdle and/or forelimb. Here we describe the pathology of a specimen of the theropod dinosaur Dilophosaurus wetherilli with eight afflicted bones of the pectoral girdle and forelimb. On its left side the animal has a fractured scapula and radius and large fibriscesses in the ulna and the proximal thumb phalanx. On its right side the animal has abnormal torsion of the humeral shaft, bony tumors on the radius, a truncated distal articular surface

Asymmetric rotational (circling) behavior, a dopamine-related asymmetry: preliminary findings in unmedicated and never-medicated schizophrenic patients.

Circling behavior is one of the best understood behaviors in animals. It is, for the most part, dopaminergically mediated and related to asymmetry in dopaminergic activity between the left and right basal ganglia or left and right frontal cortex. As a rule, animals rotate toward the hemisphere with lower striatal dopaminergic activity. A direct technique to find human analogs of circling behavior was not available. We have developed an automated rotometer with which we can apply the circling rodent model to humans. Left-prone circling behavior (neglect of right-sided turning) was found in 10 u

OP2113, a new drug for chronic hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension treatment in rat.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a cardiovascular disease characterised by an increase in pulmonary arterial (PA) resistance leading to right ventricular (RV) failure. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a major role in PH. OP2113 is a drug with beneficial effects on cardiac injuries that targets mitochondrial ROS. The aim of the study was to address the in vivo therapeutic effect of OP2113 in PH. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: PH was induced by 3 weeks of chronic hypoxia (CH-PH) in rats treated with OP2113 or its vehicle via subcutaneous osmotic mini-pumps. Haemodynamic paramete

Advanced Molecular, Metabolic, and Imaging Approaches to Characterizing Right Ventricular Failure: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

Right ventricular (RV) dysfunction is a key predictor of outcomes in pulmonary hypertension (PH), substantially contributing to illness and death. As PH progresses, increased pulmonary vascular resistance places chronic pressure overload on the right ventricle. Initially, the right ventricle adapts through hypertrophic remodeling, thickening the heart wall to maintain cardiac output. Over time, this adaptive phase shifts to maladaptive remodeling, marked by RV dilation, fibrosis, stiffness, and decoupling from the pulmonary artery, known as RV-pulmonary arterial uncoupling. This uncoupling ref

Right Ventricular Architectural Remodeling and Functional Adaptation in Pulmonary Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Global indices of right ventricle (RV) function provide limited insights into mechanisms underlying RV remodeling in pulmonary hypertension (PH). While RV myocardial architectural remodeling has been observed in PH, its effect on RV adaptation is poorly understood. METHODS: Hemodynamic assessments were performed in 2 rodent models of PH. RV free wall myoarchitecture was quantified using generalized Q-space imaging and tractography analyses. Computational models were developed to predict RV wall strains. Data from animal studies were analyzed to determine the correlations between h

Right ventricular performance during left ventricular unloading conditions: the contribution of the right ventricular free wall.

AIM: Right ventricular (RV) dysfunction is a significant complication following implantation of left ventricular assist device (LVAD). However, RV performance after LVAD implantation remains unclear. We have studied the effects of preload and afterload on RV performance under left ventricular (LV) unloading. METHODS: Six adult mongrel dogs were subjected to cardiopulmonary bypass. RV preload and afterload were independently regulated. Dynamic pressure-length analysis of RV free walls was performed using micromanometer catheter and sonomicrometric dimension transducers. Global RV systolic func

An in silico study of the effects of left ventricular assist device on right ventricular function and inter-ventricular interaction.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is associated with a high incidence of right ventricular (RV) failure, which is hypothesized to be caused by the occurring inter-ventricular interactions when the LV is unloaded. Factors contributing to these interactions are unknown. METHODS: We used computer modeling to investigate the impact of the HeartMate 3 LVAD on RV functions. The model was first calibrated against pressure-volume (PV) loops associated with a heart failure (HF) patient and validated against measurements of inter-ventricular interactions in animal experiments. The model

Effect of nonabsorbable and rapidly absorbable suture material on the cytokinetics of crypt cells in colonic anastomoses in the rat.

The effect of non-absorbable and rapidly absorbable suture material on the cytokinetics of crypt cells was studied in right and left colonic anastomoses in the rat by using stathmokinetic methods. Forty-five male Sprague-Dawley rats were allocated to three groups. In group A (n = 15), colonic anastomoses were performed in the right and left colon using nonabsorbable, stainless steel sutures. Groups B (n = 15) animals had identically located anastomoses but a rapidly absorbable suture material (Vicryl Rapide) was used. Animals of group C (n = 15) acted as controls. Eight weeks postoperatively,
