A mysterious disease was reported on May 24, 2003, when the Wisconsin Division of Public Health (DPH) received notice of a 3-year-old girl who had been hospitalized in central Wisconsin with cellulites and fever after being bitten by a prairie dog on May 13. The laboratory isolated a gram-negative bacillus, raising concerns that it might be tularemia or plague; ultimately, it was identified as an acinetobacter species and was considered to be a contaminant. Because no other such cases were reported at the time, the case was thought to be merely an isolated event. However, within two weeks, on

Pseudo-lumpy skin disease and acute Trypanosoma vivax infections occurred simultaneously in a dairy herd which had no previous history of trypanosomiasis. The onset of the outbreak was sudden and 29 out of the 40 adult Friesian and exotic x zebu cattle were found to have skin lesions. Five out of the nine animals sampled had fulminating T. vivax parasitaemias with packed red cell volumes ranging from 0.09 to 0.28 litres/litre. Whereas carried tsetse may have introduced T. vivax, the failure to trap tsetse and the presence of large numbers of biting flies strongly suggested that in this outbrea

Dermatophytosis, cryptococcosis and sporotrichosis are dermatological zoonosis caused by fungi. Control of dermatophytosis is still difficult, although it is well known as a transmittable disease from animal to human. Exotic animals such as hamster, guinea pig and rabbit, some imported from foreign countries, have become a frequent source of human dermatophytosis, and the emergence of fungal pathogens followed. The nasal cavity of dogs and cats is an important reservoir of pathogens of cryptococcosis, in addition to bird droppings. Though there have been many reports of human sporotrichosis ca

Over a period of 7 years (2004-2011), samples from 34 diseased reptiles provided by local governments, zoos, and pet shops were tested for viral infection. Animals were diagnosed based on clinical signs, including loss of appetite, diarrhea, rhinorrhea, and unexpected sudden death. Most of the exotic animals had gastrointestinal problems, such as mucosal redness and ulcers, while the native animals had no clinical symptoms. Viral sequences were found in seven animals. Retroviral genes were amplified from samples from five Burmese pythons (Python molurus bivittatus), an adenovirus was detected

A 40-year-old manatee was referred with recurrent vesicular and ulcerative dermatosis for the past 15 years. During this period the animal was anorectic and lost weight. Differential diagnoses were formulated on the basis of the history and clinical signs. Skin scrapings, bacterial and fungal culture, cytological examination, blood examination, and histopathological examination of skin biopsies narrowed this list down to autoimmune dermatosis. Despite corticosteroid therapy the symptoms recurred and the animal died. Histopathological examination of post-mortem skin biopsies showed again autoim

Some labile cell types whose numbers are normally controlled through programmed cell death are subject to markedly increased destruction during some severe infections. Lymphocytes, in particular, undergo massive and apparently unregulated apoptosis in human patients and laboratory animals with sepsis, potentially playing a major role in the severe immunosuppression that characterizes the terminal phase of fatal illness. Extensive lymphocyte apoptosis has also occurred in humans and animals infected with several exotic agents, including Bacillus anthracis, the cause of anthrax; Yersinia pestis,

Chagas disease (CD) is a zoonotic infection caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, affecting over seven million people worldwide. T. cruzi can infect more than 100 species of wild mammals, including opossums, armadillos, bats, carnivores, rodents, and primates, as well as domestic animals like dogs, cats, and exotic pets. This is the first report of T. cruzi infection in an "exotic pet" African hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris), in an endemic area for CD in Colombia. After the patient underwent euthanasia due to worsening clinical signs including diarrhea, thrombocytopenia, leukopen

Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive, facultative anaerobic, rod-shaped bacterium that can infect and cause disease in many species. In this case report, we describe a case of L. monocytogenes infection causing sepsis in a sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps). The sugar glider consumed a varied diet consisting of human food items, including cantaloupe. A nationwide outbreak of L. monocytogenes foodborne illness associated with cantaloupes occurred simultaneously with this incident case. In this case, the bacterial strains from the outbreak and glider were genetically distinct. Although rare,

BACKGROUND: Exotic and ornamental fish are highly popular companion animals resulting in a significant transcontinental trade of fish, invertebrates and aquatic plants. A major issue is the diseases associated with these organisms, as they have a major impact on health of the fish in both public and private household aquaria. A secondary issue is the trade with these products, which potentially may expand the distribution area and spread a range of diseases to new habitats.
RESULTS: We here describe how Poecilia reticulata (guppy), produced in a private household aquarium, were invaded by cer

BACKGROUND: Pathogen outbreaks mostly originate from animals, but some species are more likely to trigger epidemics. The giant land snail (Lissachatina fulica) is a widespread invader, a popular exotic pet, and a notorious vector of the rat lungworm, causing eosinophilic meningitis in humans. However, a comprehensive assessment of the risks of disease outbreak associated with this species is lacking.
METHODS: We assessed and mapped the risk of disease transmission associated with the invasion and pet trade of L. fulica. First, we conducted a review of the scientific literature to list all kno

Mini-FLOTAC (MF) has recently been proposed for the fecal quantification of gastrointestinal (GI) parasites in birds due to its higher sensitivity and precision in comparison with the McMaster method. The current research aimed to test the use of MF in routine diagnosis of coccidia and helminth infections in several domestic and exotic bird collections in Portugal. Between July 2020 and April 2021, a total of 142 fecal samples from organic layers, peacocks and ratites were collected in four Portuguese bird collections and processed using MF and fecal cultures to identify and calculate GI paras

Exotic tick species and tick-borne diseases are serious threats to live-stock, companion animals, and wildlife in the United States. Recurring introductions of exotic tick species into the United States are a significant indicator of the degree of risk. Successful tick-eradication campaigns, such as the national program that eradicated Boophilus annulatus and B. microplus from the United States, the Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Program of the US Department of Agriculture's Veterinary Services that protects against the re-entry and dissemination of Boophilus ticks from Mexico back into their f

A female, 5 yr old Bactrian camel was presented to the Exotic and Wildlife Medicine Unit, School of Veterinary Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece, with severe dehydration, depression, anorexia, mild dyspnea and diarrhea. Supportive treatment immediately initiated with fluids, electrolytes and broad-spectrum antibiotics. The general condition of the animal was stable for the next 3 days, but at 4th day became worse, since the camel remained in sternal recumbency, denied to drink water and abortion of a mummified fetus was noticed. The aborted fetus and fetal me

Infectious diseases emerge via many routes and may need to overcome stepwise bottlenecks to burgeon into epidemics and pandemics. About 60% of human infections have animal origins, whereas 40% either co-evolved with humans or emerged from non-zoonotic environmental sources. Although the dynamic interaction between wildlife, domestic animals, and humans is important for the surveillance of zoonotic potential, exotic origins tend to be overemphasized since many zoonoses come from anthropophilic wild species (for example, rats and bats). We examine the equivocal evidence of whether the appearance

Amblyomma helvolum is a widespread, generalist ectoparasite of reptiles in the oriental region, and has the potential to become highly invasive should it be inadvertently introduced outside its native range through the exotic pet trade. All life stages of A. helvolum are re-characterised morphologically and the first examples of nanism (dwarfism) and gynandromorphy (male and female tissue in one animal) for the species are described. Eighteen new hosts records are presented for A. helvolum, including the first case of human infestation. The taxonomy, distribution, ecology, phenology, disease a

An adult male Chinese box turtle (Cuora flavomarginata) presented to the Avian and Exotic Pet Service of the Animal Medical Center for periorbital swelling of the right eye. The swelling had failed to respond to nutritional supplementation and parenteral administration of vitamin A. What had initially presented as periorbital swelling developed into a growth ventral to the globe that impeded vision and was frequently traumatized by forelimb movements of the turtle. Twenty-six months after initial presentation, the turtle was anesthetized and the bulk of the mass was surgically removed. Histopa

Trichophyton simii is considered to be prevalent only in the Indian subcontinent where it was isolated from soil, as well as from infections of humans and animals. We have investigated a case of onychomycosis caused by this exotic dermatophyte, not traceable to endemic areas. This case, as in others due to this fungus in man or animals, that have been previously and sporadically reported worldwide, suggests infections caused by T. simii might be underestimated, especially outside its primary geographic areas. Indeed, there are isolates that do not show species-specific morphology, as in our ca

Chronic salmonellosis in exotic felids is uncommon. In a recent article in ASM Case Reports (2:e00098-25, 2025, https://doi.org/10.1128/asmcr.00098-25), B. L. S. Stenger, D. R. Evans, S. J. Breuer, et al. published a report on multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella enterica serovar Newport, persisting strain REPJJP01 isolated from two snow leopards (Panthera uncia) and a Pallas's cat (Otocolobus manul) in two separate regional zoos. Salmonella Newport causes human and animal enteric disease, but this particular strain has not been isolated from felids before. The reported cases highli

The role of the genus Edwardsiella in human illness is reviewed. Of the three recognized species, only Edwardsiella tarda has been demonstrated to be pathogenic for humans. Chief infections associated with this species include bacterial gastroenteritis, wound infections such as cellulitis or gas gangrene associated with trauma to mucosal surfaces, and systemic disease such as septicemia, meningitis, cholecystitis, and osteomyelitis. Risk factors that are associated with E. tarda infections include exposure to aquatic environments or exotic animals (e.g., reptiles or amphibia), preexisting live

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan capable of infecting all warm-blooded animals. This parasite has been classified into three major lineages. Our aim was to assess and compare the identified Types and genotypes in ruminants. From November 2014 to April 2015, four English language databases and four Persian databases that reported data on the T. gondii genotyping in ruminants were searched. Overall, typing results of the 250/307 T. gondii isolates in all animals showed that Type II was a predominant Type (81.4%). In addition, genotyping data from the 82/215 T. gondii isolates or strains indicate
