Modest benefit of frenotomy for infants with ankyloglossia and breastfeeding difficulties.

INTRODUCTION: With nationwide effort to increase breastfeeding rates in newborns and infants in recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the diagnosis of ankyloglossia, and the resultant otolaryngology referral for frenotomy. Overall, there is a paucity of data on the expected benefit of frenotomy in this population and the subsequent breastfeeding rate. The objectives of this study were to assess the effect of office-based frenotomy on improving breastfeeding difficulties among infants with ankyloglossia from a patient-centered perspective and examine associated effects of frenotom

Ankyloglossia as an oral functional problem and its surgical management.

Tongue-tie or ankyloglossia is a developmental anomaly of the tongue characterized by an abnormally short, thick lingual frenulum resulting in limited tongue movement. Ankyloglossia can affect feeding, speech and oral hygiene, as well as have mechanical and social effects. Diagnosis of tongue-tie is based on a clinical examination. Tongue mobility and appearance associated with the insertion, as well as the attachment and the shortness of the lingual frenulum should be evaluated. Ankyloglossia management should be considered at any age considering the risk-benefit evaluation and because of the

ANKYLOGLOSSIA AND ITS INFLUENCE ON GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE STOMATOGNATHIC SYSTEM.

OBJECTIVE: To critically examine the existing Brazilian and International scientific literature regarding the influence of short lingual frenulum over growth and development of the stomatognathic system, as well as how it impacts the achievement of the shape-function balance. DATA SOURCES: An electronic literature search was conducted in databases, including MEDLINE/PubMed, Google Scholar, LILACS, SciELO, and ScienceDirect, using the key words "lingual frenum" and "development", as well as their equivalents in Brazilian Portuguese. The literature search yielded 51 papers published between Jan

Surgical techniques for the treatment of ankyloglossia in children: a case series.

This paper reports a series of clinical cases of ankyloglossia in children, which were approached by different techniques: frenotomy and frenectomy with the use of one hemostat, two hemostats, a groove director or laser. Information on the indications, contraindications, advantages and disadvantages of the techniques was also presented. Children diagnosed with ankyloglossia were subjected to different surgical procedures. The choice of the techniques was based on the age of the patient, length of the frenulum and availability of the instruments and equipment. All the techniques presented are s

A rare case of ankyloglossia and bilateral fusion of mandibular incisors.

Dental anomalies may occur both in primary and permanent dentitions. Abnormalities in tooth size, shape, and structure result from disturbances during the morphodifferentiation stage of development. They are observed frequently during routine dental examinations and might be associated with a syndrome. Dentists must be familiar with the prevalence of such anomalies, as early diagnosis can prevent complications such as compromised aesthetics, space loss, midline shift, and carious exposure. This article describes a rare presentation of bilaterally fused permanent mandibular central and lateral

Comparison of diode laser and Er:YAG lasers in the treatment of ankyloglossia.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to compare the tolerance of lingual frenectomy with regard to a local anesthesia requirement and comparison of postsurgical discomfort experienced by patients operated on with both diode and erbium:yttrium-aluminium-garnet (Er:YAG) lasers. BACKGROUND: Ankyloglossia, commonly known as tongue-tie, is a congenital oral anomaly characterized by a short lingual frenulum. A short lingual frenulum may contribute to feeding, speech, and mechanical tongue problems. METHODS: Sixteen referred patients with tongue mobility complaints were included in this study.

Ankyloglossia: assessment, incidence, and effect of frenuloplasty on the breastfeeding dyad.

OBJECTIVE: Ankyloglossia in breastfeeding infants can cause ineffective latch, inadequate milk transfer, and maternal nipple pain, resulting in untimely weaning. The question of whether the performance of a frenuloplasty benefits the breastfeeding dyad in such a situation remains controversial. We wished to 1) define significant ankyloglossia, 2) determine the incidence in breastfeeding infants, and 3) measure the effectiveness of the frenuloplasty procedure with respect to solving specific breastfeeding problems in mother-infant dyads who served as their own controls. METHODS: We examined 27

Ankyloglossia, Breastfeeding, and Infant Weight Gain: A Mixed-Methods Study.

Disrupted mitochondrial dynamics and mitophagy contribute to functional deterioration of skeletal muscle (SM) during aging, but the regulatory mechanisms are poorly understood. Our previous study demonstrated that the expression of thyroid hormone receptor α (TRα) decreased significantly in aged mice, suggesting that the alteration of thyroidal elements, especially the decreased TRα, might attenuate local THs action thus to cause the degeneration of SM with aging, while the underlying mechanism remains to be further explored. In this study, decreased expression of myogenic regulators Myf5, Myo

Does frenotomy improve breast-feeding difficulties in infants with ankyloglossia?

The aim of this systematic review was to critically examine the existing literature regarding the effectiveness of tongue-tie division in infants with ankyloglossia, using the new grades of recommendations, assessment, development, and evaluation (GRADE) rating system. A clinical question was structured according to patient, intervention, comparison, and outcome, as follows: in infants with poor breast-feeding and ankyloglossia (patient), does frenotomy (intervention), compared to lactation support alone (comparison), improve feeding (outcome)? An electronic literature search was systematicall

Alternative Therapies for Ankyloglossia-Associated Breastfeeding Challenges: A Systematic Review.

Background: Ankyloglossia (AG) diagnoses are increasingly common, and management is not standardized. Nonsurgical alternative therapies are frequently recommended in conjunction with or instead of frenotomy, with uncertain evidence. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of nonsurgical alternative therapies (chiropractic care, myofunctional therapy, and osteopathy) in improving breastfeeding for infants diagnosed with AG. Methods: PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, Web of Science, Clinicaltrials.gov, and Google Scholar were searched (September-October 2023). Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic

Does Ankyloglossia Surgery Promote Normal Facial Development? A Systematic Review.

Background: Ankyloglossia is a congenital, abnormally short, thickened, or tight lingual frenulum that restricts tongue mobility, which may impair the development of the lower face morphology, namely the occlusion and skeleton. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether and how the lingual frenotomy benefits the occlusion and lower face skeleton development. Search methods and selection criteria: The authors, independently and in duplication, performed searches of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Medline, Web of Science, and Embase, introducing the following keywords: tongue tie, ankylo

Comparison Between Two Protocols for Ankyloglossia Diagnosis in Newborn Babies.

Purpose: Ankyloglossia is a congenital anomaly that restricts tongue movements and can interfere in breastfeeding. The purpose of this study was to compare two protocols for ankyloglossia diagnosis: (1) the Neonatal Tongue Screening Test (NTST); and (2) the Bristol Tongue Assessment Tool (BTAT). Methods: This was a cohort study involving live births at the University Hospital of Brasilia, Brasilia, Brazil, from August 2017 to July 2018. The gathered data were based on clinical examinations and interviews with mothers. The Stata software program was applied to conduct the analyses using the chi

Relationship between Breastfeeding Difficulties, Ankyloglossia, and Frenotomy: A Literature Review.

OBJECTIVE: Breastfeeding plays a key role in the development of the baby, in addition to the benefits to the mother and this dyad. Among the possible difficulties in this process, we have ankyloglossia. Some professionals opt for the frenotomy, although the literature is controversial. This paper aims to present how the literature provides subsidies for health professionals' decision and action in the intersection of the themes: breastfeeding, ankyloglossia, and frenotomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The research on the platforms SciELO and PubMed used the terms: "ankyloglossia," "frenotomy," and

Geometric model to predict improvement after lingual frenulectomy for ankyloglossia.

OBJECTIVES: Frenulectomy for ankyloglossia is an intervention that often improves breastfeeding quality for both the mother and infant. Current classification systems assess and identify patients with ankyloglossia, but they do not predict the degree of improvement after lingual frenulectomy. We propose an idealized geometric model to quantify the potential effect of frenulectomy for ankyloglossia. METHODS: Our geometric model depicts the intact lingual frenulum as a triangular pyramid of mucosa on the floor of mouth. After incising one edge of the pyramid, as is performed during a frenulecto

Assessment of lingual function when ankyloglossia (tongue-tie) is suspected.

Dental specialists are frequently confronted with the task of attempting to determine whether a cause and effect relationship exists between a short or restricting lingual frenum (ankyloglossia or tongue-tie) and a specific oral motor dysfunction. Because there is no standardized definition of what constitutes a condition of tongue-tie, the dental practitioner is often unsure as to the appropriate course of action with a patient with suspected ankyloglossia. This paper describes clinical measures that permit quantifying several anatomic and functional aspects of the tongue. Such baseline analy
