Coral kin aggregations exhibit mixed allogeneic reactions and enhanced fitness during early ontogeny.

BACKGROUND: Aggregated settlement of kin larvae in sessile marine invertebrates may result in a complex array of compatible and incompatible allogeneic responses within each assemblage. Each such aggregate can, therefore, be considered as a distinct self-organizing biological entity representing adaptations that have evolved to maximize the potential benefits of gregarious settlement. However, only sparse information exists on the selective forces and ecological consequences of allogeneic coalescence. RESULTS: We studied the consequences of aggregated settlement of kin larvae of Stylophora pi

Xeniaphyllane-Type Diterpenoids from the Soft Coral Sclerophytum humesi: Resolving Absolute Configurations and Anti-Alzheimer's Potential.

A combined bioassay- and 1H NMR-guided isolation strategy led to the discovery of four new terpenoids, including three xeniaphyllane-type diterpenoids, sclerohumins P-R (1-3), and a norcaryophyllene-type, sclerophyllene A (4), from the soft coral Sclerophytum humesi. The structures and absolute configurations of these compounds were elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic analysis, including NMR, HRESIMS, SOR, TDDFT-ECD, and DP4+ probability analysis. The stereogenic centers at C-15 in related xeniaphyllanes were proposed for the first time based on comparative SOR analysis. Compounds 1 and

Persistent Legacy Effects of Marine Heatwaves on Coral Symbioses.

Obligate endosymbioses between eukaryotes and their single-celled inhabitants form the basis of many ecosystems, yet little is known about the long-term impacts of climate change on them. On coral reefs, extensive studies have shown that climate change-driven heatwaves and other environmental stressors can disrupt the obligate symbiosis between reef-building corals and Symbiodiniaceae, with consequences for coral fitness and survival. However, despite coral symbioses playing a fundamental role in reef resilience to climate change, whether, and at what rate, they recover following heatwave disr

Assessment of multiple probiotic strains that protect Montipora capitata coral from infection by Vibrio coralliilyticus.

Coral disease outbreaks threaten reef ecosystems, often leading to widespread mortality and declines in coral cover. Outbreaks of tissue loss diseases like acute Montipora white syndrome (aMWS) have impacted coral populations that include the Hawaiian rice coral (Montipora capitata). Multiple strains of Vibrio coralliilyticus are known pathogens, and strain OCN008 has been demonstrated as an etiological agent of aMWS in Hawai'i. Recent work has demonstrated that probiotic bacterial strains can be used to directly treat or prevent transmission (prophylaxis) of coral diseases. Based on their pro

High microbial diversity, functional redundancy, and prophage enrichment support the success of the yellow pencil coral, Madracis mirabilis, in Curaçao's coral reefs.

UNLABELLED: Coral reefs have undergone extensive coral loss and shifts in community composition worldwide. Despite this, some coral species appear naturally more resistant, such as Madracis mirabilis (herein Madracis). Madracis has emerged as the dominant hard coral in Curaçao, comprising 26% of coral cover in reefs that declined by 78% between 1973 and 2015. Although life history traits and competitive mechanisms contribute to Madracis's success, these factors alone may not fully explain it, as other species with similar traits have not shown comparable success. Here, we investigated the pote

Critical thresholds of adult patch density and spacing during coral fertilization.

Climate change and other anthropogenic stressors have severe impacts on the ecological functioning of marine ecosystems by causing widespread declines in population sizes and, for surviving individuals, limiting the capacity for population recovery through sexual reproduction. Ecological theory suggests that affected populations can suffer local extinction because of Allee effects, where reduced population densities prevent gamete encounters, resulting in reproductive failure. Without understanding the relationship between the density or spacing of spawning individuals and fertilization succes

Settlement patterns and temporal successions of coral reef cryptic communities affect diversity assessments using autonomous reef monitoring structures (ARMS).

Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures (ARMS) are used worldwide to assess cryptic diversity, especially on coral reefs. They were developed as standardised tools, yet conditions of deployment, such as immersion duration and/or deployment and retrieval seasons, vary among studies. Here we studied temporal and seasonal variability in coral reef cryptic communities sampled with 15 ARMS on a single coral reef slope site at Reunion Island, Southwest Indian Ocean. Settlement patterns and temporal succession of Eukaryote communities were investigated across three immersion times (6 months, 1 year, 2

A distinctive new species of the coral shrimp genus Microprosthema Stimpson, 1860 from the Atlantic coast of Florida and Honduras (Decapoda: Stenopodidea: Spongicolidae).

A new species of the spongicolid coral shrimp genus Microprosthema Stimpson, 1860 is described on the basis of three specimens collected by hand while scuba diving off the Atlantic coast of southern Florida, with additional photographic records from Roatan, Honduras. Microprosthema dimitrisorum sp. nov. can be separated from all presently known species of the genus by a unique combination of morphological characters, and most easily, by its highly diagnostic and conspicuous colour pattern consisting of large red spots on most of the body and appendages.

Non-native coral species dominate the fouling community on a semi-submersible platform in the southern Caribbean.

A coral community was examined on a semi-submersible platform that was moored at the leeward side of Curaçao, in the southern Caribbean, from August 2016 until August 2017. This community included several non-native or cryptogenic species. Among them were two scleractinian corals (Tubastraea coccinea and T. tagusensis) and two octocorals (Chromonephthea sp. and an unidentified Nephtheidae sp.). This is the first reported presence of T. tagusensis in the southern Caribbean, and the genus Chromonephthea in the Caribbean region. An ascidian, Perophora cf. regina, is also reported from the souther

Characterization of anthropogenic marine macro-debris affecting coral habitat in the highly urbanized seascape of Mumbai megacity.

Marine debris has become a major form of pollution and a serious ecosystem health concern. The present study evaluates the accumulation, origin, and fate of debris in intertidal coral habitats of Mumbai-one of the world's highly populated coastal cities on the west coast of India. Predominantly, seven hermatypic coral species belonging to seven genera and five families were identified and mainly represented by Pseudosidastrea, Porites, and Bernardpora. In terms of number, the mean density of marine debris was 1.60 ± 0.13 SE items/m2, which is higher than the global average. The mean density of

A proteomic analysis of skeletal tissue anomaly in the brain coral Platygyra carnosa.

Coral skeletal growth anomaly (GA) is a common coral disease. It has been considered as a pathological condition comparable to abnormal tissue growth in mammals, but little is known about the molecular changes underlying coral GA. To investigate the molecular pathology of GA, we compared the proteome between normal and GA-affected tissues of the brain coral Platygyra carnosa using iTRAQ-labeling and LC-MS/MS, which quantified 818 proteins and identified 117 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs). GO analyses revealed DEPs that might be related to GA included "translational elongation", "prot

Cloudiness reduces the bleaching response of coral reefs exposed to heat stress.

Climate change and warming ocean temperatures are a threat to coral reef ecosystems. Since the 1980s, there has been an increase in mass coral bleaching and associated coral mortality due to more frequent and severe thermal stress. Although most research has focused on the role of temperature, coral bleaching is a product of the interacting effects of temperature and other environmental variables such as solar radiation. High light exacerbates the effects of thermal stress on corals, whereas reductions in light can reduce sensitivity to thermal stress. Here, we use an updated global dataset of

Longevity strategies in response to light in the reef coral Stylophora pistillata.

Aging is a multifactorial process that results in progressive loss of regenerative capacity and tissue function while simultaneously favoring the development of a large array of age-related diseases. Evidence suggests that the accumulation of senescent cells in tissue promotes both normal and pathological aging. Oxic stress is a key driver of cellular senescence. Because symbiotic long-lived reef corals experience daily hyperoxic and hypoxic transitions, we hypothesized that these long-lived animals have developed specific longevity strategies in response to light. We analyzed transcriptome va

Understanding the underwater behaviour of scuba divers in Hong Kong.

Diving-related activities may constitute a major threat to coral reefs. This study aimed to quantify the impact of diving in Hong Kong on hard corals and understand how socio-economic characteristics and experience level of divers influence diver-inflicted damage. We recorded and analysed the underwater behaviour of 81 recreational divers. On average, a diver was in contact with marine biota 14.7 times with about 40% of contacts involved corals and 38% were damaging contacts with corals or other biota in a single dive. The most harm-inflicting groups included inexperienced and camera-carrying

Comparing bacterial community composition between healthy and white plague-like disease states in Orbicella annularis using PhyloChip™ G3 microarrays.

Coral disease is a global problem. Diseases are typically named or described based on macroscopic changes, but broad signs of coral distress such as tissue loss or discoloration are unlikely to be specific to a particular pathogen. For example, there appear to be multiple diseases that manifest the rapid tissue loss that characterizes 'white plague.' PhyloChip™ G3 microarrays were used to compare the bacterial community composition of both healthy and white plague-like diseased corals. Samples of lobed star coral (Orbicella annularis, formerly of the genus Montastraea[1]) were collected from t

Corals chemically cue mutualistic fishes to remove competing seaweeds.

Corals in the genus Acropora generate much of the structural complexity upon which coral reefs depend, but they are susceptible to damage from toxic seaweeds. Acropora nasuta minimizes this damage by chemically cuing symbiotic goby fishes (Gobiodon histrio or Paragobiodon echinocephalus) to remove the toxic seaweed Chlorodesmis fastigiata. Within minutes of seaweed contact, or contact from only seaweed chemical extract, the coral releases an odor that recruits gobies to trim the seaweed and dramatically reduce coral damage that would otherwise occur. In turn, chemically defended gobies become

High potential for formation and persistence of chimeras following aggregated larval settlement in the broadcast spawning coral, Acropora millepora.

In sessile modular marine invertebrates, chimeras can originate from fusions of closely settling larvae or of colonies that come into contact through growth or movement. While it has been shown that juveniles of brooding corals fuse under experimental conditions, chimera formation in broadcast spawning corals, the most abundant group of reef corals, has not been examined. This study explores the capacity of the broadcast spawning coral Acropora millepora to form chimeras under experimental conditions and to persist as chimeras in the field. Under experimental conditions, 1.5-fold more larvae s

Disease incidence is related to bleaching extent in reef-building corals.

Recent outbreaks of coral bleaching and disease have contributed to substantial declines in the abundance of reef-building coral. Significant attention has been paid to both phenomena in order to determine their effect on reef trajectories. Although each is positively correlated with high temperatures, few studies have explored the potential links between bleaching and disease. A longitudinal study of corals in the Florida Keys was therefore conducted during the 2005 Caribbean bleaching event to quantify bleaching extent and disease incidence in corals, and to determine whether they were relat

Phage therapy of coral white plague disease: properties of phage BA3.

The bacteriophage BA3 multiplies in and lyses the coral pathogen Thalassomonas loyana. The complete genome of phage BA3 was sequenced; it contains 47 open reading frames with a 40.9% G + C content. Phage BA3 adsorbed to its starved host in seawater with a k = 1.0 x 10(-6) phage ml(-1) min(-1). Phage therapy of coral disease in aquarium experiments was successful when the phage was added at the same time as the pathogen or 1 day later, but failed to protect the coral when added 2 days after bacterial infection. When the phages were added 1 day after coral infection, the phage titer increased ab
