Many polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are acutely toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms in the presence of environmentally realistic intensities of solar ultraviolet radiation (SUVR). In this study, the cytoxicity/phototoxicity of anthracene photo-modified products to aquatic animals was assessed based on in vitro toxicity assays using a fish hepatoma cell line (PLHC-1 cell line). The results from this study showed that pre-exposure of anthracene/cell culture media to SUVR caused a significant amount of photo-modification and reduced the phototoxicity of parent anthracene compound.

We introduce donor-acceptor substituted anthracenes as effective molecular solar thermal energy storage compounds that operate exclusively in the solid state. The donor-acceptor anthracenes undergo visible light-induced [4+4] cycloaddition reaction, producing metastable cycloadducts, dianthracenes with quaternary carbons, and storing photon energy. The triggered cycloreversion of dianthracenes to anthracenes discharges the stored energy as heat in the order of 100 kJ/mol (200 J/g). The series of compounds displays remarkable self-heating, or cascading heat release, upon the initial triggering.

Mammary teat removal (thelectomy) was performed unilaterally in female Sprague-Dawley rats at 35 days of age. They were given 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) when aged either 55 days or 79 days. One third were unmated; one third were mated one week and one third mated more than 3 weeks after DMBA administration. Animals were killed when tumour-positive or after one year, when mammary lesions had developed in 99% of rats. The mean latent period for adenocarcinomas was 18.9 +/- 2.0 weeks. Benign mammary tumours, mainly secretory adenomas, developed significantly later (39.2 +/- 1.7 weeks).

The effect of various hormones or hormone combinations on DNA synthesis was investigated in organ cultures of 20 dimethylbenz(a)anthracene-induced rat mammary tumors. Three tumors were insulin independent and were totally insensitive to all other hormones tested. Seventeen tumors were insulin dependent for DNA synthesis and, in the presence of insulin, displayed variable responses to the other hormones. The title compound, C21H15N3O2, contains a nitro-aniline ring and an anthracene ring system bridged over the methyl-ene amino group.
