Evaluation of the anti-diarrheal activity of the leaf extract of Croton macrostachyus Hocsht. ex Del. (Euphorbiaceae) in mice model.

BACKGROUND: Traditional healers in Ethiopia use a wide range of medicinal plants with antidiarrheal properties. Among these, Croton macrostachyus is one such plant claimed to have an antidiarrheal activity in Ethiopian folklore medicine. Previous studies showed that the crude extract is endowed with the claimed property. The present study was undertaken to further the claim by screening different fractions for the said activity so that it could serve as a basis for subsequent studies. METHODS: The fractions were obtained by successive extraction in soxhlet apparatus with solvents of different

Acute infectious diarrheal disease in children.

The management of acute diarrheal disease in children must consider potential etiologic agents and their common presentation. The workup and assessment should be tailored to the clinical condition of the patient and the most likely pathogen. Management must primarily focus on fluid therapy and dietary manipulation. Antibiotics have a very restricted role as do antidiarrheal agents.

Medicinal grade opium tincture for severe diarrhea: effect revisited in observational study.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Chronic diarrhea is a common disorder that interferes with normal daily activities and results in poor quality of life. Fecal urgency and incontinence often necessitate clinical consultation, but the pathophysiological mechanisms are difficult to differentiate in a clinical setting. Therefore, drugs targeting the opioid receptors, such as diphenoxylate and loperamide, are typically used, as they reduce both gut motility and secretion. RECENT FINDINGS: For severe diarrhea, morphine-containing extemporaneous opium tincture drops have recently been reprofiled to a pharmaceutic

In Vivo Effects of Cagaita (Eugenia dysenterica, DC.) Leaf Extracts on Diarrhea Treatment.

Eugenia dysenterica is a plant typically found in the Cerrado biome and commonly used in popular medicine due to its pharmacological properties, which include antidiarrheal, skin healing, and antimicrobial activities. The effects of ethanolic extract, aqueous extract and infusion of E. dysenterica leaves on intestinal motility and antidiarrheal activity were evaluated using ricin oil-induced diarrhea in rats. At doses of 400 and 800 mg·Kg(-1), the ethanolic extract decreased intestinal motility while the other extracts showed no significant effects. Moreover, serum levels of chloride, magnesiu

Chronic Diarrhea.

Chronic diarrhea can be due to any of several hundred conditions. When investigation fails to uncover a specific cause that can be treated successfully, nonspecific therapy is implemented. This includes dietary alterations if specific aggravating foods can be identified, enteral or parenteral nutrition if nutritional status is compromised, and use of oral rehydration solutions if diarrhea produces volume depletion. Strategic use of dietary fiber can improve stool consistency and can be of special value when fecal incontinence is present concurrently. Medications of value include opiate antidia

Therapy for acute infectious diarrhea in children.

This article reviews current recommendations of therapy with antidiarrheal compounds and antimicrobial agents for acute infectious diarrhea in children. In most infants and children with acute infectious diarrhea, treatment with antidiarrheal compounds is not indicated. Many of these compounds interfere with identification of enteropathogens in stool specimens, and the antimotility class has an overdose potential. Antimicrobial therapy is given to reduce symptoms and to prevent the spread of infection by decreasing fecal shedding of organisms. Although effective therapy is not available for pa

A Case of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus With Intractable Chronic Diarrhea and Challenging Glycemic Control.

The first step in treating diabetes mellitus (DM)-related diarrhea is to thoroughly control the serum glucose level. The authors herein describe a 75-year-old man who was diagnosed with type 1 DM when he was 32 years old. The patient lost his appetite due to hot weather and spent a week eating sweets and drinking juice. As a result, he developed diabetic ketoacidosis and was initially treated in another hospital, and then transferred to our facility for glycemic control two weeks later. He had been suffering from watery diarrhea for more than 100 days after being admitted to our hospital. His

Chemical profiles and pharmacological insights of Anisomeles indica Kuntze: An experimental chemico-biological interaction.

Anisomeles indica (L.) Kuntze is an ethnomedicinally important plant that has long been used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of ailments, including dyspepsia, abdominal pain, colic, allergies, inflammation, and rheumatic arthritis. However, the scientific framework underlying these medicinal properties is not well known. This study aimed to investigate the antidepressive, antidiarrheal, thrombolytic, and anti-inflammatory potential of a methanol extract of A. indica (MeOH-AI). The potential bioactive compounds in the MeOH-AI were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

[Frequent Gastro-Intestinal Disorders: Management of Functional Dyspepsia and Irritable Bowel Syndrome in Clinical Practice].

Frequent Gastro-Intestinal Disorders: Management of Functional Dyspepsia and Irritable Bowel Syndrome in Clinical Practice Abstract: Functional dyspepsia (FD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), two common gastrointestinal entities with overlapping symptoms, should be diagnosed according to Rome IV criteria. This includes one or more of the following symptoms: in FD, postprandial fullness, early satiation, epigastric pain or burning; in IBS, recurrent abdominal pain associated with defecation, change in frequency of stool or form of stool. To exclude structural diseases, attention should be pa

State of the Art Bowel Management for Pediatric Colorectal Problems: Hirschsprung Disease.

After an initial pull-though, patients with Hirschsprung disease (HD) can present with obstructive symptoms, Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis (HAEC), failure to thrive, or fecal soiling. This current review focuses on algorithms for evaluation and treatment in children with HD as a part of a manuscript series on updates in bowel management. In constipated patients, anatomic causes of obstruction should be excluded. Once anatomy is confirmed to be normal, laxatives, fiber, osmotic laxatives, or mechanical management can be utilized. Botulinum toxin injections are performed in all patients

Pharmacotherapy for microscopic colitis.

Microscopic colitis is a common cause of chronic watery diarrhea. Its etiology is unknown, but use of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, aspirin, and lansoprazole may be risk factors for developing the disorder. Therapy is directed primarily at resolving the symptoms of microscopic colitis; bismuth subsalicylate, aminosalicylates, traditional corticosteroids, and budesonide have been evaluated. Compared with other therapies, budesonide has the strongest evidence for effectiveness in decreasing the volume and frequency of stools and improving the quality of life; it is, however, a costly drug

Role of Roux-en-Y feeding jejunostomy for patients with acute head injury.

The total care of a patient with severe head injury is challenging and may extend for weeks, months, or even years. A major challenge of this care includes nutritional support: swallowing is impaired, aspiration accompanies gastric tube feeding, parenteral nutrition is limited to short term in hospital care, and needle jejunostomy or transabdominal jejunostomy are prone to inadvertent removal. The role of Roux-en-Y feeding jejunostomy was evaluated in 13 patients with acute head injury. Procedure related complications include prolapse of the ostomy (1 patient) and stoma-ischemia requiring revi
