Labor Pain in Different Dilatations of the Cervix and Apgar Scores Affected by Aromatherapy: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Labor pain (LP), as a physiological process, is known as one of the most severe pains. Aromatherapy is one of the methods to reduce LP in the first phase of labor. It is an important approach for enjoyable birth and decreases the severity of pain in today's society. Accordingly, this study aimed to systematically review the relieving effect of aromatherapy in LP and Apgar score. We used international databases such as EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, PubMed, Cochrane Library, ProQuest, and clinicaltrials.gov to conduct a systematic search for all relevant articles. Effect of a statewide neonatal resuscitation training program on Apgar scores among high-risk neonates in Illinois.

OBJECTIVE: The national Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), started in 1987, provided training to hospital delivery room personnel to standardize knowledge and skills to reduce neonatal morbidity and mortality and increase successful resuscitation during the first few critical minutes after birth. The Apgar score continues to be used as the best established index of immediate postnatal health. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of the NRP instruction in Illinois hospitals by examining Apgar scores among high-risk infants who are likely to benefit from the NRP. METHODS: A r

Predictors of neonatal resuscitation, low Apgar scores, and umbilical artery pH among growth-restricted neonates.

OBJECTIVE: To identify risk factors associated with poorer immediate neonatal outcomes among growth-restricted neonates. METHODS: Records of all 530 growth-restricted neonates born between January 1989 and February 1995 were reviewed. Outcomes included resuscitation measures, Apgar scores, and umbilical blood gas values. Neonates were assigned to one of six anesthetic groups, and outcomes were compared. Predictors of poorer outcomes were examined using logistic and linear regression. RESULTS: Neonates exposed to general anesthesia were more likely to be intubated (37.9% versus 4.1%, P < .001

Would surgical Apgar score be useful to predict postoperative complications after proximal femoral fracture surgery? - A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The surgical Apgar score (SAS) is a perioperative risk evaluation score, which considers intraoperative minimum heart rate, minimum mean arterial pressure and estimated blood loss. Although validated in multiple surgical fields, SAS remains quite controversial in the orthopedic one. The main purpose of this study was to investigate if SAS relates with the occurrence of complications during the first 30-days after proximal femoral fracture surgery. METHODS: Retrospective study including all consecutive patients submitted to proximal femoral fracture surgery between January and July

The single pregnancy predicting model of 1 minute Apgar score less than 7 after preterm birth: A retrospective study.

Preterm delivery is greatly associated with perinatal mortality and morbidity, while there is no objective way to identify high-risk newborns currently. This study aimed at discovering the risk factor for Apgar score less than 7 at 1 minute of preterm neonates born with vaginal delivery. A retrospective study was performed in single pregnancy women with a vaginal delivery before 37 weeks of gestation. All the preterm infants were categorized into three types: very preterm birth (28 to 32 weeks), moderate preterm birth (32 to 34 weeks) and late preterm birth (34 to 37 weeks). Risk factors were

Relation between umbilical cord blood pH, base deficit, lactate, 5-minute Apgar score and development of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy.

OBJECTIVE: Umbilical cord acid-base analysis is fundamental for assessing intrapartum hypoxia. The accuracy of arterial umbilical cord blood lactate, pH and base deficit to reflect a low 5-minute Apgar score and hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) stage 2-3 was assessed, and new gestational age-adjusted reference standards were compared with traditional stationary reference values. DESIGN AND SAMPLE: A total of 13,735 pH-validated routine cord acid-base values from singleton deliveries were tested with stationary and gestational age-adjusted reference values using receiver operating charact

Birth weight, Apgar scores, labor and delivery complications and prenatal characteristics of Southeast Asian adolescents and older mothers.

The study population included 337 adolescents and 876 mothers who delivered live-born, singleton infants in the Maternity and Infant Care Program at the Minneapolis Health Department between 1980-1982. Whites and blacks on the average experienced menarche 1-2 years earlier than the Southeast Asians although age of first pregnancy was 2 years later for the Southeast Asians. In spite of the significantly later ages of entry into prenatal care, lower weight gains, and hematocrits among the Southeast Asians, compared to the white and black populations, overall height-weight status on admission com

Predictive Value of the Surgical Apgar Score for Major Postoperative Complications: A Prospective Observational Study in a Tertiary Care Setting.

BACKGROUND: The Surgical Apgar Score (SAS) is a simple intraoperative scoring system proposed to estimate postoperative risk; however, its discriminative performance in heterogeneous surgical populations remains uncertain. This study prospectively evaluated the discriminative ability of the SAS for postoperative complications in a mixed surgical cohort. METHODS: In this prospective observational cohort study, adult patients (≥18 years) undergoing elective or emergency major surgical procedures, defined as operations performed under general or regional anesthesia with an anticipated postoperat

Determinants of low fifth minute Apgar scores among newborns at North Shoa Zone Public Hospitals in Ethiopia.

Low APGAR scores are the cause of 13.6% of new born morbidity and mortality. Even though much has been done, still the levels of birth asphyxia and neonatal mortality in Ethiopia are significantly high. This study aimed to assess determinants of low fifth-minute APGAR scores among singleton new born babies. An institution-based unmatched case-control study was conducted among 426 neonates. Cases and controls were selected by systematic random sampling. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were employed. Association was assessed by adjusted odd ratio with 95% confidence. Th

Improving apgar scores and reducing perineal injuries through midwife-led quality improvements: an observational study in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Globally, the quality of maternal and newborn care remains inadequate, as seen through indicators like perineal injuries and low Apgar scores. While midwifery practices have the potential to improve care quality and health outcomes, there is a lack of evidence on how midwife-led initiatives, particularly those aimed at improving the use of dynamic birth positions, intrapartum support, and perineal protection, affect these outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To explore how the use of dynamic birth positions, intrapartum support, and perineal protection impact the incidence of perineal injuries an

Absence of fetal heart rate cycling on the intrapartum cardiotocograph (CTG) is associated with intrapartum pyrexia and lower Apgar scores.

BACKGROUND: Cycling consists of alternating periods of reduced and normal fetal heart variability, reflecting changes in fetal behavioral states. Occurrence of active and quiet sleep cycles is considered to be a hallmark of fetal autonomic nervous system integrity, demonstrating healthy interaction between the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems. Cycling is an overlooked feature in most international cardiotocography (CTG) guidelines. The authors tested the hypothesis that fetuses showing no cycling in the intrapartum period have poorer outcomes. AIM: To investigate whether the ab

Perinatal risk factors and Apgar score ≤ 3 in first minute of life in a referral tertiary obstetric and neonatal hospital.

This study aimed to identify the maternal, labour and newborn risk factors associated with an Apgar score of ≤3 in the first minute of life. This was a cross-sectional evaluation from an internal database information system in a tertiary referral obstetric and neonatal centre. Newborns with gestational age ≥24 weeks and birth weight ≥500 g with a registered Apgar score in the first minute of life were included. A total of 4475 newborns had an Apgar score >3 and 154 newborns had an Apgar score ≤3 in the first minute of life. A multivariate analysis revealed that eclampsia (OR = 31.53), twin pre
