Toxicity of biorational insecticides: activity against the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer).

The relationship between dose for each of four biorational insecticides (pyrethrins, neem extract, capsiacin extract, insecticidal soap) and mortality of the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) was determined using a laboratory bioassay. These insecticides were toxic to aphids and paired mixtures of the insecticides provided synergistic activity as measured by aphid mortality under the laboratory bioassay conditions. Capsiacin extracts were found to provide low levels of mortality alone but acted synergistically in mixtures with the other insecticides and provided higher than expected levels of

Genome wide identification and evolutionary analysis of vat like NBS-LRR genes potentially associated with resistance to aphids in cotton.

Nucleotide Binding Site - Leucine Rich Repeat (NBS-LRR) genes play a significant role in plant defense against biotic stresses and are an integral part of signal transduction pathways. Vat gene has been well reported for their role in resistance to Aphis gossypii and viruses transmitted by them. Despite their importance, Vat like NBS-LRR resistance genes have not yet been identified and studied in cotton species. This study report hundreds of orthologous Vat like NBS-LRR genes from the genomes of 18 cotton species through homology searches and the distribution of those identified genes were te

Brevicoryne brassicae aphids interfere with transcriptome responses of Arabidopsis thaliana to feeding by Plutella xylostella caterpillars in a density-dependent manner.

Plants are commonly attacked by multiple herbivorous species. Yet, little is known about transcriptional patterns underlying plant responses to multiple insect attackers feeding simultaneously. Here, we assessed transcriptomic responses of Arabidopsis thaliana plants to simultaneous feeding by Plutella xylostella caterpillars and Brevicoryne brassicae aphids in comparison to plants infested by P. xylostella caterpillars alone, using microarray analysis. We particularly investigated how aphid feeding interferes with the transcriptomic response to P. xylostella caterpillars and whether this inte

Extreme Hydrolyzable Tannin Accumulation in Aphid-Induced Galls and Laccase-Mediated Tolerance in Schlechtendalia chinensis.

Plants redirect their secondary metabolism when herbivores feed on them, and the galls that the aphid Schlechtendalia chinensis induces on Rhus chinensis carry this response to an extreme, with hydrolyzable tannins (HTs) reaching 74.5% of gall wall dry weight, about 32 times the level in ungalled leaves. To find out how the plant builds this much tannin and how the aphid survives it, we followed HT accumulation and candidate gene expression through gall development, expressed the genes in Arabidopsis thaliana and characterised the aphid enzymes acting on tannin. Expression of phosphoglucomutas

An Integrated Morphometric-Molecular Framework for Characterization of Developmental Stages in the Safflower Aphid Uroleucon gobonis (Matsumura).

Reliable identification of pest developmental stages provides a foundation for investigating aphid development and adaptive mechanisms and informs the selection of timely interventions in integrated pest management. In this study, eight morphological indicators of Uroleucon gobonis were distinguishing under a stereomicroscope. Additionally, six candidate genes identified from transcriptomic data were selected to characterize their expression profiles across five developmental instars. These results showed that the body length enabled distinguishing of the aphids from the first instar to the fo

Method for Analyzing CAZyme Activity from Whole-Body and Saliva Proteome of Russian Wheat Aphid.

Advanced proteome extraction and characterization techniques for Diuraphis noxia (Russian Wheat Aphid: RWA) enable precise biochemical profiling, where high-quality proteome extraction is critical. This chapter introduces an optimized proteome extraction method for comprehensive profiling of D. noxia, enabling analysis of whole-body and saliva proteomes to advance biochemical and functional characterization. The efficacy of two optimized proteome extraction methods was compared: a nondestructive artificial saliva extraction and a destructive whole-body extraction. The proteome extract concentr

Pea transcriptional and phytohormonal responses to adapted and non-adapted aphid biotypes at early stages of infestation.

Pea (Pisum sativum L.), a major legume crop, is affected by various parasites including the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris). The pea aphid is composed of multiple biotypes, each one being able to feed and reproduce on one or a few legume species. To understand the pea defense mechanisms to a pea adapted and a non-adapted A. pisum biotype, we studied the early molecular responses of four pea genotypes with contrasted levels of resistance, which are controlled primarily by the ApRVII locus. We found that major defense-related phytohormones and their derivatives in pea did not show clear r

Essential Oils from Selected Mediterranean Aromatic Plants-Characterization and Biological Activity as Aphid Biopesticides.

The need for alternatives to synthetic pesticides is a priority today, especially when these pesticides are directed against aphids, one of the more challenging pests facing modern agriculture. Essential oils may be one of these alternatives. We assayed the insecticidal potential of essential oils from Thymus vulgaris, Rosmarinus officinalis var. 'prostratus' and Lavandula dentata. Essential oil extraction was carried out by hydrodistillation in a Clevenger-type apparatus for 3 h and their respective composition was elucidated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The essential oil fraction

Induction of aphid resistance in tobacco by the cucumber mosaic virus CMV∆2b mutant is jasmonate-dependent.

Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is vectored by aphids, including Myzus persicae. Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum 'Xanthi') plants infected with a mutant of the Fny strain of CMV (Fny-CMVΔ2b, which cannot express the CMV 2b protein) exhibit strong resistance against M. persicae, which is manifested by decreased survival and reproduction of aphids confined on the plants. Previously, we found that the Fny-CMV 1a replication protein elicits aphid resistance in plants infected with Fny-CMVΔ2b, whereas in plants infected with wild-type Fny-CMV this is counteracted by the CMV 2b protein, a counterdefence prot

Genome-wide characterization of the sorghum JAZ gene family and their responses to phytohormone treatments and aphid infestation.

Jasmonate ZIM-domain (JAZ) proteins are the key repressors of the jasmonic acid (JA) signal transduction pathway and play a crucial role in stress-related defense, phytohormone crosstalk and modulation of the growth-defense tradeoff. In this study, the sorghum genome was analyzed through genome-wide comparison and domain scan analysis, which led to the identification of 18 sorghum JAZ (SbJAZ) genes. All SbJAZ proteins possess the conserved TIFY and Jas domains and they formed a phylogenetic tree with five clusters related to the orthologs of other plant species. Similarly, evolutionary analysi

Elevated production of reactive oxygen species is related to host plant resistance to sugarcane aphid in sorghum.

Sugarcane aphid (Melanaphis sacchari) is a phloem-feeding insect that severely affects the growth and productivity of sorghum and other related crops. While a growing body of knowledge is accumulating regarding plant, and insect interactions, the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) against aphid infestation in sorghum has not been established yet. Here, the involvement of H2O2 and ROS detoxification enzymes in host plant resistance to sugarcane aphid in sorghum was demonstrated. The H2O2 accumulation and expression patterns of selected ROS scavenging enzymes including ascorbate peroxidase (A

Armet, an aphid effector protein, induces pathogen resistance in plants by promoting the accumulation of salicylic acid.

Effector proteins present in aphid saliva are thought to modulate aphid-plant interactions. Armet, an effector protein, is found in the phloem sap of pea-aphid-infested plants and is indispensable for the survival of aphids on plants. However, its function in plants has not been investigated. Here, we explored the functions of Armet after delivery into plants. Examination of the transcriptomes of Nicotiana benthamiana and Medicago truncatula following transgenic expression of Armet or infiltration of the protein showed that Armet activated pathways associated with plant-pathogen interactions,

The ethylene response factor Pti5 contributes to potato aphid resistance in tomato independent of ethylene signalling.

Ethylene response factors (ERFs) comprise a large family of transcription factors that regulate numerous biological processes including growth, development, and response to environmental stresses. Here, we report that Pti5, an ERF in tomato [Solanum lycopersicum (Linnaeus)] was transcriptionally upregulated in response to the potato aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas), and contributed to plant defences that limited the population growth of this phloem-feeding insect. Virus-induced gene silencing of Pti5 enhanced aphid population growth on tomato, both on an aphid-susceptible cultivar and on

Foliar methyl salicylate emissions indicate prolonged aphid infestation on silver birch and black alder.

It is well documented that when plants are damaged by insects they respond by emitting a range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). While there have been numerous reports concerning VOCs induced by chewing herbivores, there are relatively few studies detailing the VOCs induced by aphid feeding. The effects of aphid feeding on VOCs emitted by boreal forest trees have been particularly neglected. Herbivore-induced VOCs have relevance to direct and indirect plant defence and atmospheric chemistry. In this study, we analysed the VOCs emitted by Betula pendula (Roth) and Alnus glutinosa (L.) (Gaer

A novel virus isolated from the aphid Brevicoryne brassicae with similarity to Hymenoptera picorna-like viruses.

A novel virus, Brevicoryne brassicae virus (BrBV), has been identified in the cabbage aphid using a method based on the random amplification of encapsidated RNA. The complete sequence of the RNA genome of BrBV has been determined. The positive-strand genomic RNA is 10 161 nt, excluding the 3' poly(A) tail, and contains a single open reading frame (positions 793-9744) encoding a putative polyprotein of 2983 aa. The N-terminal part of the polyprotein shows similarity with the structural proteins of iflaviruses. The C-terminal part possesses consensus sequences of the helicase, cysteine protease

Comparative biology of a novel strain of Russian wheat aphid (Homoptera: Aphididae) on three wheat cultivars.

In spring 2003, several outbreaks of the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), were reported in fields of supposedly resistant wheat cultivars ('Stanton', 'Halt', and 'Prairie Red') in eastern Colorado. We conducted two laboratory experiments to compare the biological performance of this new biotype 2 (B2) to that of two D. noxia collections of biotype 1 (B1) from western Kansas by using three wheat cultivars as host plants: 'Trego', a susceptible cultivar, and Stanton and Halt, two cultivars with different genetic sources of resistance. Survival of solitary nymphs from first insta

Honeydew-Associated Bacteria Suppress Zucchini Defense Responses and Enhance the Performance of the Cotton-Melon Aphid.

Aphid honeydew is generally regarded as a sugar-rich excretion, but it also contains microbial communities that may influence plant-herbivore interactions. Whether honeydew-associated bacteria suppress plant defense responses to enhance aphid performance remains unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of honeydew-associated bacteria from the cotton-melon aphid, Aphis gossypii, on defense responses in zucchini (Cucurbita pepo) and subsequent aphid performance. Compared with sterilized honeydew, crude honeydew significantly increased aphid body weight, suggesting that honeydew-associated bact

Dissecting aphid transmission determinants in Citrus Tristeza Virus using chimeric viruses and gene substitutions.

Citrus Tristeza Virus (CTV) is the most economically significant viral pathogen of citrus worldwide, transmitted in a semipersistent manner by several aphid species, most efficiently by Aphis [Toxoptera] citricidus. Transmission efficiency varies substantially among CTV genotypes, but the viral determinants underlying these differences remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the roles of three viral genes, p33, p18, and p13, in aphid transmission using a genetically engineered CTV-T36 mutant (CTV-T36Δp33Δp18Δp13) as a backbone. This mutant is derived from the poorly transmissi

Differential response of winter wheat and barley cultivars to yellow dwarf virus strains and aphid vectors.

Yellow dwarf viruses (YDV), comprising strains of barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) and cereal yellow dwarf virus (CYDV), constrain cereal production in the United States by causing yellow dwarf disease (YDD). Five principal B/CYDV strains occur in cereals: BYDV-PAV, -MAV, -RMV, -SGV, and CYDV-RPV. Although YDV has been reported in Nebraska, cultivar-specific responses and field-level strain composition remain poorly characterized. We conducted a two-year (2024-2025), multi-location field study at Mead, Fairbury, and Concord, Nebraska to evaluate 10 widely grown wheat and barley cultivars for Y

Effects of Rust Fungus and Aphid Infestation on Plant Height and Seed Production of Impatiens parviflora DC.

The effects of the rust fungus Puccinia komarovii Tranzschel and the aphid Impatientinum asiaticum Nevsky 1929 on plant height, seed number per capsule, and seed mass were investigated in eight small balsam (Impatiens parviflora DC.) stands in Hungary and one in Poland. Two stands were infected by rust, five by aphids, and two were healthy. The lowest average plant height was 37.5 cm and the highest 94.7 cm, both measured in aphid-infested stands. Examining the stands separately, no relationship appeared with the type of damage. For data pooled across stands, differences were significant: rust
