Appendectomy was performed on 40 consecutive consenting patients undergoing elective cesarean section in a clinic population. The control group consisted of all other patients undergoing elective cesarean section during the period of study. The populations were similar. Clinical infection, blood loss, gastrointestinal tract recovery rates were equal in both groups. Appendectomy added 15 minutes to the operation time and extended the hospital stay by about one-half day. There were no wound infections or serious morbidity. A fifth of the appendixes removed were abnormal, including two with infla

Appendectomy is among the most common emergency operations performed in children and is generally well tolerated. However, postoperative complications remain an important source of morbidity, particularly in patients with complicated appendicitis. Disease severity is a major predictor of adverse postoperative outcomes. Despite this, there is no universal definition for complicated appendicitis. American College of Surgeons' National Surgical Quality Improvement Program in Pediatrics (NSQIP-P) criteria provide a proposed intraoperative framework for severity stratification that may help to impr

Acute appendicitis is one of the most common causes of emergency surgery worldwide. Its diagnosis is primarily based on clinical presentation, supported by laboratory tests such as a complete blood count and imaging studies, with a non-contrast CT scan considered the gold standard. Although appendectomy is generally safe, it carries the risk of immediate and delayed complications. One such complication, stump appendicitis, is rare and often underrecognized, which can delay diagnosis and treatment. The objective of this report is to highlight the importance of considering stump appendicitis in

Appendix has a distinct abundance of lymphatic cells and serves as a reservoir of microbiota which helps to replenish the large intestine with healthy flora. And it is the primary site of IgA induction, which shapes the composition of the intestinal microbiota. Recent population-based cohort studies report that appendectomy is associated with an increased risk of acute myocardial infarction and ischemic heart disease. Here, whether appendectomy has an effect on the occurrence and development of coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3)-induced viral myocarditis is studied. 103 TCID50 CVB3 was inoculated i.p. i

BACKGROUND: Appendiceal cancer (AC) is a rare malignancy usually diagnosed incidentally after appendectomy. Risk factors for AC are poorly understood. We sought to provide a descriptive analysis for patients with AC discovered after appendectomy for acute appendicitis (AA).
METHODS: The 2016-2017 American College of Surgeons-National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Procedure-Targeted Appendectomy database was queried for adult patients who underwent appendectomy for image-suspected AA. Patients with pathology consistent with AA were compared to patients found to have AC. A multivariable

Laparoscopy has gained importance in the abdominal emergency surgery field. Acute appendicitis is one of the major indications for emergency surgery, being laparoscopy the gold standard approach. We report a case of a 39-years-old female presenting with acute kidney injury (AKI) after laparoscopy. Differential diagnosis was considered with prerenal AKI etiology due to sepsis and low fluid input, however this was ruled out due to absence of electrolyte imbalance and no correlation with septic parameters. Laparoscopy CO2 pneumoperitoneum can potentially lead to multiple organ failure, including

BACKGROUND: Incidental appendectomy remains a controversial issue. We aimed to collect experience using a modified surgical technique that could be applied securely in infants.
METHODS: We performed aseptic intussuscepted incidental appendectomy (AIIA) in three patients using a technique that is thought to assure appendix necrosis along with intact cecal wall.
RESULTS: There was no perioperative morbidity due to AIIA in the three patients. In two infants the necrotic appendix was found in the diaper. One infant died secondary to diaphragmatic hernia. Autopsy with histological examination rev

Stump appendicitis is a rare delayed complication of appendectomy. The delay in diagnosis is usually because of a prior history of appendectomy. We report a case of stump appendicitis diagnosed pre-operatively with a computerized tomography (CT) scan after laparoscopic appendectomy. An 18-year-old male presented with a one-week history of lower abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. He had a history of laparoscopic appendectomy for acute appendicitis. Physical examination revealed tenderness and guarding in the lower abdomen. CT scan showed free pelvic fluid with a tubular structure of about 2.5

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic appendectomy has been widely practiced for uncomplicated appendicitis; various reports demonstrated its merits in assisting diagnosis, reducing postoperative pain, analgesic requirement, and incidence of wound infection. The role of laparoscopy in management of complicated appendicitis, ie, gangrenous, perforated appendicitis and appendiceal abscess, remains undefined. Currently, the choice of operative approach is mostly at the surgeons' discretion. A retrospective study was conducted in our institution to review the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of laparoscopic a

Laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) is a well spread method today, but not as largely accepted as cholecystectomy, the cure of gastro-esophageal reflux and some other procedures (relatively small in number) for which the laparoscopic approach is the golden standard. Otherwise it is improbable that LA will gain such a status, at least in the near future. On the other hand it is obvious that LA offers important advantages for some special situations: the right iliac area syndrome, obesity, professional sportsmen, abnormal localization of the appendix, as well for the cases when localized and especial

OBJECTIVE: To find out the incidence of acute appendicitis leading to acute abdominal pain and necessitating appendectomy in the follow-up of patients after radical cystectomy and urinary diversions.
METHODS: A prospective 160 consecutive radical cystectomy patients with urinary diversion in whom appendectomy was not done between January 1991 and June 2001 were reviewed for the incidence of acute appendicitis. Ages ranged between 26 and 73 years. There were 143 males and 17 females. 120 patients had ileal conduit, 20 sigmoid neobladder, 5 continent urinary diversion, and 15 ureterosigmoidosto

A prospective randomized trial comparing laparoscopic appendectomy with open appendectomy in patients with a diagnosis of acute appendicitis was conducted between October 1992 and April 1994. Of the 158 patients randomized, 7 patients were excluded because of protocol violations (conversion to laparotomy in 4, appendix not removed in 3). The 151 patients randomized to either a laparoscopic (n = 79) or an open appendectomy (n = 72) showed no difference in sex, age, American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) rating, or previous abdominal surgery. The histologic classification of normal, catarrhal,

Five cases of bilateral ureteral obstruction after appendicectomy are presented. All five patients were boys (age range, 9 to 15 years). All of them had had severe appendicitis. Based on the urethrocystoscopy findings, edema of the posterior bladder wall appeared to be the cause of obstruction of both distal ureters. This is confirmed by the immediate recovery of renal function after installation of bilateral uretercatheters. It is known that contamination of the peritoneal cavity can occur by organisms leaking from a gangrenous or perforated appendix. This can cause localized inflammatory ede

The neurogenic appendicopathy is a disease which is caused by proliferation of nerve fibres and hyperplasia of endocrine cells in the submucosa of the appendix. It is to be diagnosed surely only histologically. 28 patients in which appendectomy specimens solely changes of neurogenic appendicopathy type were present have been traced. Following statements can be made: 1. The disease is curable in 96% by simple appendectomy. 2. Concerning this diagnosis about 60% of so-called "negative" appendectomies will find a reasonable explication. 3. At the same time a facultative precurser disease of appen

A 15-year-old male adolescent underwent an appendectomy for acute gangrenous appendicitis. One week after surgery, he underwent an exploratory laparotomy that revealed two pericecal abscesses, which were drained. Two weeks later, he had diffuse peritonitis and underwent another laparotomy, which revealed a sterile fibrinous peritonitis. Oligoarticular inflammatory arthritis, urethritis, and recurrent peritonitis subsequently developed. He was found to be positive for HLA-B27 antigens. This case report illustrates that reactive arthritis (Reiter's syndrome) may develop after peritoneal infectio

Background: Stump appendicitis-a rare, delayed complication of appendectomy-is most commonly managed with surgical exploration and stump appendectomy. Conservative management in the pediatric population is poorly characterized in the literature. Case Report: We report a case of a 10-year-old male who was diagnosed with stump appendicitis and initially treated nonoperatively. He received intravenous antibiotics and supportive therapy while in the hospital, was discharged on a course of oral antibiotics, and remained asymptomatic for the following 9 weeks until he underwent an elective interval

BACKGROUND: Non-operative management has been suggested as a therapy for uncomplicated appendicitis. Notwithstanding, the risk of missing an appendiceal tumor must be considered, being the surgical piece crucial to rule out neoplasms. Therefore, we aim to determine the incidence of appendiceal neoplasms in patients with acute appendicitis, tumor types and the importance of the anatomopathological study of the surgical piece.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study in which we described patients who underwent emergent appendectomy with histopathological findings of appendiceal neoplasms from January
