Malnutrition screening and treatment in pediatric oncology: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition and cachexia during pediatric cancer treatment worsen toxicity and quality-of-life. Clinical practice varies with lack of standard malnutrition definition and nutrition interventions. This scoping review highlights available malnutrition screening and intervention data in childhood cancer and the need for standardizing assessment and treatment. METHODS: Ovid Medline, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library were searched for studies containing malnutrition as the primary outcome with anthropometric, radiographic, or biochemical measurements. Secondary outcomes included validated

A pilot study of the effects of cannabis on appetite hormones in HIV-infected adult men.

RATIONALE: The endocannabinoid system is under active investigation as a pharmacological target for obesity management due to its role in appetite regulation and metabolism. Exogenous cannabinoids such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) stimulate appetite and food intake. However, there are no controlled observations directly linking THC to changes of most of the appetite hormones. OBJECTIVES: We took the opportunity afforded by a placebo-controlled trial of smoked medicinal cannabis for HIV-associated neuropathic pain to evaluate the effects of THC on the appetite hormones ghrelin, leptin and PYY

Owner's Perspective About the Use of Mirtazapine Transdermal Ointment in Cats-A Survey-Based Study.

Mirtazapine is an antidepressant used as an appetite stimulant in cats. This study aims to assess owner perspectives on the use of transdermal mirtazapine in cats. A multicentric survey-based study was conducted. A survey of 15 questions about efficacy, side effects, and overall perception was sent to owners of cats that had received the treatment between January 2021 and March 2023 in two European veterinary hospitals. From 108 contacted owners, 70 responses were obtained. Application to the ear was considered easy by 97% of respondents, and 91% followed the manufacturers' instructions for al

Olanzapine and risperidone effects on appetite and ghrelin in chronic schizophrenic patients.

Olanzapine and other second generation antipsychotics have been associated with weight gain, which may be related to changes in appetite and food intake. However, it is unclear whether changes in appetite in response to treatment with second generation antipsychotics are persistent in patients treated chronically with these medications and the extent to which changes in appetite are related to any continuing weight gain associated with long-term treatment with these drugs. In a randomized 5-month study of the effects of olanzapine and risperidone on metabolic changes in chronic schizophrenic p

Acute anorexigenic action of leptin in rainbow trout is mediated by the hypothalamic Pi3k pathway.

Leptin (Lep) is an anorexigenic hormone and regulates appetite-related neuropeptides in mammals. A number of neuropeptides have also been linked to appetite regulation in teleost fish, but Lep signaling activation and effects on appetite-regulating neurons are poorly elucidated in early vertebrates. This study uses cellular, tissue and organismal approaches to elucidate the acute, central Lep action in rainbow trout. The results demonstrate that Lep activates phosphorylation of protein kinase B (Akt) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 in rainbow trout hypothalamus-derived c

The droplet size of intraduodenal fat emulsions influences antropyloroduodenal motility, hormone release, and appetite in healthy males.

BACKGROUND: The presence of fat in the small intestine modulates gastrointestinal motility, stimulates plasma cholecystokinin and peptide YY release, and suppresses appetite and energy intake. These effects are dependent on the lipolysis of fat. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to evaluate the hypothesis that increasing the droplet size of a fat emulsion would attenuate these effects. DESIGN: Ten healthy, lean males were studied on 4 separate occasions in single-blind randomized order. Antropyloroduodenal pressures, plasma triglycerides, cholecystokinin, peptide YY, and appetite were measured during 1

Corticostriatal Suppression of Appetitive Pavlovian Conditioned Responding.

The capacity to suppress learned responses is essential for animals to adapt in dynamic environments. Extinction is a process by which animals learn to suppress conditioned responding when an expected outcome is omitted. The infralimbic (IL) cortex to nucleus accumbens shell (NAcS) neural circuit is implicated in suppressing conditioned responding after extinction, especially in the context of operant cocaine-seeking behavior. However, the role of the IL-to-NAcS neural circuit in the extinction of responding to appetitive Pavlovian cues is unknown, and the psychological mechanisms involved in

Effect of glucose supplementation on appetite and the pyloric motor response to intraduodenal glucose and lipid.

The effects of different macronutrients on appetite and pyloric motility and the impact of short-term dietary glucose supplementation on these responses were evaluated. Ten males (aged 19-38 yr) received isocaloric (2.9 kcal/min) intraduodenal infusions of glucose and lipid while antropyloroduodenal motility and appetite were assessed by manometry and visual analog scales, respectively. Effects of each intraduodenal nutrient on appetite and motility were evaluated before and after 7 days of dietary supplementation with glucose (400 g daily). Initially, both nutrients caused a similar rise in p

Insights on discovery, efficacy, safety and clinical applications of ghrelin receptor agonist capromorelin in veterinary medicine.

Growth hormone and insulin like growth factor-1 plays an important role in the regulation of body composition and metabolism. Growth Hormone is released from the pituitary through a specific G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) called growth hormone secretagogue receptor 1a expressed in the hypothalamus. Ghrelin is a peptide hormone released from the cells in the stomach, which stimulates appetite and food intake in mammals, regulates gut motility, gastric acid secretion, taste sensation, circadian rhythm, learning and memory, oxidative stress, autophagy, glucose metabolism etc. When the release

Gastric electrical stimulation increases ghrelin production and inhibits catecholaminergic brainstem neurons in rats.

Gastric electrical stimulation (GES) is a new therapeutic option for functional dyspepsia and gastroparesis. In addition to ameliorating nausea and vomiting, GES results in improved appetite which is not always associated with accelerated gastric emptying. To explore the central and peripheral factors underlying GES-associated improvement of appetite we developed a GES model in anaesthetized Wistar rats. During laparotomy, two electrodes were implanted into the stomach and high-frequency low-energy GES (14 Hz, 5 mA) was applied. The effects of 1 h GES were compared with sham stimulation. After

A neurochemical theory of appetite and weight changes in depressive states.

The literature concerning appetite and weight changes in depressive illness is reviewed. Diminished appetite and weight loss have for about 100 years been regarded as prominent symptoms of depressive illness. A tendency for some depressives to gain weight has also been recognized. About 85% of depressives lose weight and 15% gain weight. There appears to be a tendency for weight gain to be commoner in milder depressions. Carbohydrate craving is also described in association with some depressed states. The neurochemical control of appetite in health is surveyed. Norepinephrine appears to be nec

Identifying and managing malnutrition stemming from different causes.

Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) is highly prevalent among peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients and is a strong predictor of morbidity and mortality. A wide range of factors can lead to PEM and associated wasting (PEM/W) in PD patients, but persistent inflammation and the presence of diabetes have been identified as the two main reasons. An important body of literature has been reporting studies of methods suitable for detecting malnutrition in its early phase so that appropriate intervention can be provided. Although assessment of nutrition status has been substantially improved, no definitive

Effects of Fentanyl-Adulterated Methamphetamine on Circulating Ghrelin in Rats.

The appetite hormone ghrelin influences biological processes that are responsible for substance use disorder, which is related to alcohol and most abused drugs including cocaine, methamphetamine, nicotine, etc. In general, upregulation of the ghrelin system enhances drug cravings and substance use. Studies reported in the literature consistently demonstrated that the ghrelin system is associated with stimulants. However, research on opioids in combination with methamphetamine has not been reported. In this study, we examined the relationship of circulating ghrelin with the polydrug use of fent

IUPHAR ECR review: Cancer-related anorexia-cachexia in cancer patients: Pathophysiology and treatment.

Cancer-related anorexia-cachexia (CRAC) comprises one of the most common syndromes of advanced cancer patients. The prevalence of CRAC increases from 50% to 80% before death. CRAC is associated not only with impaired quality of life in patients and family members but also with shorter survival. The management of CRAC is a great challenge in clinical practice. There are no definite practice guidelines yet for the prevention and treatment of CRAC. A multimodal strategy is the most effective way to treat anorexia-cachexia. Numerous medications have been suggested and used in clinical trials, whil

An interesting case of pulmonary hypertension in nephrotic syndrome due to amphetamine use for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

UNLABELLED: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) was first associated with stimulants use in the 1960s during an outbreak of amphetamine-like appetite suppressants (anorexigens). To date, various drugs and toxins have been correlated with PAH. Diagnosing PAH in nephrotic syndrome has always remained a challenge due to the overlap of signs and symptoms in clinical presentation between the two entities. CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, the authors present an interesting case of a 43-year-old male, diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome secondary to minimal change disease, as well as currently pre

[Diabetes mellitus and illicit drugs].

Lifetime prevalence of illicit drug use is high in the Czech Republic (CR) - it reached 31.2 % of the population in the age group 15-64 years in 2017. Diabetes mellitus (DM) applies to 8.8 % of the Czech population. Risks of illicit drug use in diabetic patients are related both to their effect on glucose metabolism and to the lifestyle associated with illicit drug use, which might lead to worsened glycemic control and increased morbidity and mortality of the patients. Cannabis use, being the most common illicit drug use in the CR, presumably does not have a direct effect on glucose metabolism

Cardiac Cachexia: Perspectives for Prevention and Treatment.

Cachexia is a prevalent pathological condition associated with chronic heart failure. Its occurrence predicts increased morbidity and mortality independent of important clinical variables such as age, ventricular function, or heart failure functional class. The clinical consequences of cachexia are dependent on both weight loss and systemic inflammation, which accompany cachexia development. Skeletal muscle wasting is an important component of cachexia; it often precedes cachexia development and predicts poor outcome in heart failure. Cachexia clinically affects several organs and systems. It
