Our understanding of Late Jurassic sauropod faunas heavily relies on the fossil record of the northern hemisphere. During the last two decades, paleontological fieldwork in the Oxfordian-Kimmeridgian Cañadón Calcáreo Formation of Argentina has yielded several sauropod remains. Here we present a new taxon, Bicharracosaurus dionidei gen. et sp. nov., represented by a partial vertebral column and a fragment of the ilium. Anatomical as well as histological evidence suggest that the new specimen represents an adult individual. The posterior dorsals of Bicharracosaurus show great similarity with iso

BACKGROUND: Although many children experience violence and abuse each year, there is a lack of instruments measuring parents' emotional reactions to these events. One instrument, the Parent Emotional Reaction Questionnaire (PERQ), allows researchers and clinicians to survey a broad spectrum of parents' feelings directly related to their children's traumatic experiences. The objectives of this study were: (1) to examine the factor structure and the internal consistency of the PERQ; (2) to evaluate the discriminant validity of the instrument; and (3) to measure whether potential subscales are se

The authors report the case of a 75-year-old woman with an osteoporotic vertebral crush fracture of L1, without detectable vertebral necrosis, with signs of conus medullaris compression. The outcome at 2 years was satisfactory with complete recovery of neurological impairment after laminectomy from T12 to L2 and evacuation of a compressive arachnoid cyst overlying L1. This rare case is remarkable because of the presence of an arachnoid cyst. The role of the latter in the pathogenesis and progression of the neurological lesions is discussed.

An arachnoid cyst of the internal auditory canal causing compression atrophy of nerve trunks was found in each of three human temporal bones. Arachnoid cysts are found in about 0.5% of operations for suspected neoplasm of the internal auditory canal. There is no current method for differentiating intracanalicular neoplasm from arachnoid cysts.

We present two cases that demonstrate the occurrence of symptomatic arachnoid cysts after craniotomy. Both patients presented 1 year postoperatively with generalized seizures as the only symptom. Focal or localizing neurological signs were not present. Both patients responded well to shunting procedures.

Two infants who presented with macrocephaly had very large noncommunicating cysts at the cranial base that were displacing the brain. Only one of the patients was hydrocephalic; he eventually underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunting after craniotomy and attempted internal drainage of the cyst. The other infant had a cystoperitoneal shunt. Both have done well after 4 and 6 years of follow-up, respectively. These large arachnoid cysts are bilateral lesions with the potential for severe surgical complications and a questionable possibility of cure. The authors recommend systematic radiological inv

STUDY DESIGN: A case report of a patient with adhesive arachnoiditis after combined spinal and epidural anesthesia.
OBJECTIVE: To report an extremely rare case of paraplegia due to adhesive arachnoiditis with extensive syringomyelia (ES) and a giant anterior arachnoid spinal cyst (AASC) after spinal and epidural anesthesia for obstetric surgery.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Progressive inflammation of the arachnoid mater due to trauma, infection, or hydrocortisone was reported as early as the 1970s. However, coexistence of ES and a giant AASC after spinal and epidural anesthesia is extremely

Arachnoid cysts are sacs within the arachnoid membrane, filled with cerebrospinal fluid, and overwhelmingly asymptomatic; however, they can also lead to neurological symptoms such as epilepsy. The dependence of AC on epilepsy has been a subject of controversy because of studies with mixed results on whether AC contributes to seizure activity. This is a narrative review for the synthesis of available present research on the pathophysiological mechanisms of epilepsy, clinical presentation, and treatment options in patients with epilepsy and ACs. Some find no impactful association between ACs and

Giant arachnoid granulations (GAGs) are minimally investigated. Here, we systematically review the available data in published reports to better understand their etiologies, nomenclature, and clinical significance. In the literature, 195 GAGs have been documented in 169 persons of varied ages (range, 0.33 to 91 years; mean, 43 ± 20 years; 54% female). Prior reports depict intrasinus (i.e., dural venous sinus, DVS) (84%), extrasinus (i.e., diploic or calvarial) (15%), and mixed (1%) GAG types that exhibit pedunculated, sessile, or vermiform morphologies. GAG size ranged from 0.4 to 6 cm in maxi

Arachnoid web (AW) is a rare phenomenon that has only been described in small case reports and case series,1 most commonly presenting with upper motor neuron signs and subtle radiographic findings, such as the classically described "scalpel sign."2 In this report, we demonstrate the use of imaging and operative techniques that have not been previously shown in the literature as a video for AW. These include high-definition magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences for preoperative diagnosis, use of intraoperative ultrasonography for identification of adhesions, and operative technique for AW

The arachnoid membranes are projections of connective tissue in the subarachnoid space that connect the arachnoid mater to the pia mater. These are underappreciated and largely unrecognized by most neuroradiologists despite being found to be increasingly important in the pathogenesis, imaging, and treatment of communicating hydrocephalus. This review aims to provide neuroradiologists with an overview of the history, embryology, histology, anatomy, and normal imaging appearance of these membranes, as well as some examples of their clinical importance.

OBJECTIVE: Arachnoid webs are rare intradural lesions that can cause direct spinal cord compression or alteration of the cerebrospinal fluid flow with syringomyelia. Surgery has been historically performed through wide-open laminectomies. The aim of this study is to prove the feasibility of minimally invasive techniques for the excision of arachnoid webs.
METHODS: A retrospective review of two cases of minimally invasive excision of thoracic arachnoid webs was performed. Surgery was undertaken through expandable tubular retractors.
RESULTS: Complete excision was achieved through the describe

Spinal arachnoid cysts are uncommon distinct pouches of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or CSF-like fluid found adjacent to normal CSF spaces commonly extradural and rarely intradural. They are usually asymptomatic and discovered incidentally. We present a patient with rapid upper motor neuron neurologic deterioration over the course of 1 week. Findings on magnetic resonance imaging revealed various central nervous system demyelination lesions and thoracic arachnoid cyst with cord compression. This acute presentation, in the absence of trauma, is not in favor of the natural history of the intradural

Objectives Quadrigeminal cistern arachnoid cysts (QCACs), which are usually asymptomatic and may be accidental findings during radiological evaluation, are rare, comprising 5-10% of all intracranial arachnoid cysts (ACs). We report a series of eight patients with QCACs treated with neuroendoscopic intervention and try to discuss the different endoscopic approaches according to the different types of QCACs. Materials and methods Between October 2007 and January 2013, eight patients affected by QCACs were endoscopically treated. All the endoscopic procedures were completed uneventfully (infraten

A 4-week-old male infant presented with hypothermia, hypoglycemia, and hyperbilirubinemia. His medical history was remarkable for hydrocephalus secondary to an arachnoid cyst, intermittent hypoglycemia, hypothermia, and poor feeding requiring nasogastric tube for nutrition. Physical exam revealed retrognathia, mild hypotonia, micropenis, and clinodactyly. Ophthalmologic exam demonstrated bilateral optic nerve hypoplasia (ONH). Laboratory data confirmed inadequate cortisol and growth hormone response to hypoglycemia, a low thyroxine level, and direct hyperbilirubinemia. Magnetic resonance imagi

Sellar arachnoid cysts are rare; an infected arachnoid cyst is extremely rare as only one case has been reported to date in the literature. Here, we report a patient with an infected or inflamed sellar arachnoid cyst that was successfully treated with transsphenoidal surgery (TSA). A 53-year-old female with a history of chronic sinusitis developed a headache 5 months ago, and one month before admission polyuria, polydipsia, and abnormal vaginal bleeding occurred. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a sellar cystic mass with a thickened pituitary stalk. Preoperative hormonal study revea

Arachnoid cysts are very common lesions in paediatric patients, with treatment depending on their location and symptomatology. They are usually solitary cysts but may be associated with other central nervous system diseases such as tumours and congenital deformities. We describe the case of a neonate diagnosed with an arachnoid cyst of the quadrigeminal cistern treated by endoscopy. After the operation, the child's condition worsened; a CT scan revealed a midline posterior fossa tumour not visible in the preoperative neuroradiological tests. The tumour, a medulloblastoma, was partially removed

Spinal extradural arachnoid cysts (ACs) have an infrequent predilection for the sacrum. As with their counterparts in other regions of the spine, cysts in this location are mostly asymptomatic. Common presentations in symptomatic cases include pain in the low back or perineum, radiculopathy, and sphincteric dysfunction. The authors report a hitherto undescribed presentation in which the predominant symptoms are those related to an associated holocord syrinx. This 15-year-old boy presented with fluctuating, spastic paraparesis and a dissociated sensory loss in the trunk. Admission MR imaging of
