FROM MUSEUM TRANSLATION TO AUTHENTIC MATERIALS FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION: TRANSLATING JAVANESE ARCHAEOLOGICAL HERITAGE INTO ENGLISH THROUGH MUSEUM SONOBUDOYO'S BILINGUAL TEXTS.

Museum bilingual texts play an important role in communicating cultural heritage to international audiences while offering potential resources for English language education. However, limited research has integrated translation strategies, the representation of archaeological and historical meanings, and the pedagogical value of bilingual museum texts within a single analytical framework. This study investigates the English translation of Javanese archaeological heritage texts in Museum Sonobudoyo, Yogyakarta. Specifically, it examines (1) the translation strategies employed, (2) how archaeolo

Hemifacial microsomia (oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum) in an individual from the Teramo Sant'Anna archaeological site (7th-12th centuries of the Common Era, Italy).

BACKGROUND: This study is based in an analysis of the skeletal remains of an adult male from the Teramo Sant'Anna archaeological site (7th-12th centuries of the Common Era, Teramo, Italy). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The individual shows distinct abnormalities that principally involve asymmetric hypoplasia and dysmorphogenesis of the facial skeleton. The combination of these findings and the absence of abnormalities of the spine strongly suggest diagnosis of the congenital malformation known as hemifacial microsomia. This very heterogeneous syndrome affects primarily aural, ocular, oral and mandi

A Human Deciduous Tooth and New 40Ar/39Ar Dating Results from the Middle Pleistocene Archaeological Site of Isernia La Pineta, Southern Italy.

Isernia La Pineta (south-central Italy, Molise) is one of the most important archaeological localities of the Middle Pleistocene in Western Europe. It is an extensive open-air site with abundant lithic industry and faunal remains distributed across four stratified archaeosurfaces that have been found in two sectors of the excavation (3c, 3a, 3s10 in sect. I; 3a in sect. II). The prehistoric attendance was close to a wet environment, with a series of small waterfalls and lakes associated to calcareous tufa deposits. An isolated human deciduous incisor (labelled IS42) was discovered in 2014 with

ESR at Treugol'naya Cave, Northern Caucasus Mt., Russia: dating Russia's oldest archaeological site and paleoclimatic change in Oxygen Isotope Stage 11.

At 1510 m asl, Treugol'naya Cave, Russia, is the highest cave showing evidence for human occupation in eastern Europe. Layers 4-7 in the 4.5-m-thick sequence yielded many artifacts representing Lower Paleolithic pebble and flake tool industries. Abundant faunal remains include extinct Middle Pleistocene species. Palynological, paleomagnetic, and microsedimentological analyses indicate that several climatic changes of different magnitudes occurred in the sequence. To determine absolute ages for Treugol'naya, 32 independent subsamples from nine ungulate teeth collected from the Lower Paleolithic

Application of SEM/EDX and metallographic techniques to the diachronic study (6th-18th century) of metallurgical materials found in archaeological excavations on the island of Ibiza (Spain).

This work is the archaeometric study of the different types of materials recovered in the same excavation or archaeological dig (which makes it possible to accurately date the remains found) on the island of Ibiza (Spain). The samples found belong only to the phase of iron forging and span a very wide historical period from the 6th to the 18th century, including the Islamic period. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) is proposed to observe the images obtained of the surfaces of the samples, in order to study the topographical, morphological and microstructural characteristics providing informat

Revealing Joseon period People's single nucleotide polymorphism associated with lactase gene by ancient DNA analysis of human remains from archaeological sites in Korea.

Lactase non-persistence (LNP), one of the causes of lactose intolerance, is related to lactase gene associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Since the frequency of LNP varies by ethnic group and country, the research to reveal the presence or absence of LNP for specific people has been conducted worldwide. However, in East Asia, the study of lactase gene associated SNPs have not been sufficiently examined so far using ancient human specimens from archaeological sites. In our study of Joseon period human remains (n=14), we successfully revealed genetic information of lactase gene asso

Stabilisation of waterlogged archaeological wood: the analysis of structural and dimensional changes of different conservation methods using magnetic resonance imaging and X-ray micro-computed tomography.

Waterlogged archaeological wood can be preserved for many years in the absence of air, as decomposition is substantially slowed down. After excavation, conservation is necessary to prevent damage of objects due to uncontrolled drying. In this study, the following conservation methods were tested to investigate their ability to stabilise the objects: alcohol-ether resin, melamine-formaldehyde (Kauramin 800), lactitol/trehalose, saccharose, polyethylene glycol (PEG 2000 with air-drying and PEG 2000 or 400 and 4000 with subsequent freeze-drying). In order to precisely understand the changes cause

Multiple loci variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) analysis (MLVA) of Mycobacterium leprae isolates amplified from European archaeological human remains with lepromatous leprosy.

Molecular typing methods based on polymorphisms in single nucleotides and short tandem repeat motifs have been developed as epidemiological typing tools for Mycobacterium leprae. We have used a variable number tandem repeat method based on three variable loci to identify strain variation in archaeological cases of lepromatous leprosy. The panel of polymorphic loci used revealed unique profiles in five cases of leprosy, including those with identical SNP type and subtype. These were also different from profiles of three previously studied lepromatous skeletons. Whilst examination with SNP typin

Different types of traumatic lesions on mediaeval skeletons from archaeological sites in Varese (North Italy): diagnosis on ante mortal fractures using macroscopic, radiological and CT analysis.

This is the medical history of three skeletons from archaeological sites in the province of Varese that are interesting because they show signs of traumatic injury to the skull and postcranial skeleton. Fractures of two of the skeletons were analysed by CT scan and radiological investigations to understand the extent of the damage and to hypothesise the cause. The study of lesions on ancient human remains is important to understand the degree of interpersonal violence within ancient communities and to reconstruct the dynamics of a violent episode.

TriENA: a Portable, Hybrid Multimode Spectrometer Combining Diffuse Reflectance, LED-Induced Fluorescence, and Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy for a Holistic Analysis of Materials on Monuments and Objects of Archaeological Interest.

In the context of modern Heritage Science (HS) studies, chemical analysis together with contextual information provide valuable insights into the composition and structure, provenance, age, and/or production technology of objects and materials, facilitating also decision-making concerning the selection of appropriate conservation approaches for artifacts and monuments. While powerful laboratory techniques are often employed in such investigations, an increasing demand exists for the use of portable instrumentation that can be deployed at archaeological sites or museums. To address these needs,

Fasciola hepatica eggs in paleofaeces of the Persian onager Equus hemionus onager, a donkey from Chehrabad archaeological site, dating back to the Sassanid Empire (224-651 AD), in ancient Iran.

Fascioliasis is a highly pathogenic zoonotic disease caused by the liver trematodes Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica. Within the multidisciplinary initiative against this disease, there is the aim of understanding how this disease reached a worldwide distribution, with important veterinary and medical repercussions, by elucidating the spreading steps followed by the two fasciolids from their paleobiogeograhical origins. Fasciola eggs were detected in paleofaeces of a donkey, probably the present-day endangered Persian onager Equus hemionus onager, found in the Chehrabad salt mine archaeologi

Developmental anomalies and South American paleopathology: A comparison of block vertebrae and co-occurring axial anomalies among three skeletal samples from the El Brujo archaeological complex of northern coastal Peru.

Though developmental anomalies have been noted for over a century in South American paleopathology, they have received less attention than other pathological conditions. When anomalies are reported, they tend to be unusual case studies or incidental findings. Paleopathological research should also consider anomalies from a population perspective, to broaden our understanding about the frequency of specific anomalies, and potentially offer insight into genetic relationships, cultural behavior, or environmental factors. This investigation compared block vertebrae and co-occurring postcranial axi

Application of the OliveID morphometric tool for the identification of archaeobotanical carbonized olive endocarps: evidence for morphological continuity with the modern Throumbolia cultivar.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluates the applicability of digital morphometric analysis to images of archaeological carbonized olive endocarps as a proof-of-concept initial approach for archaeobotanical investigations. Conventional morphometric analyses of olive endocarps largely rely on manual measurements, limiting reproducibility and quantitative comparison. METHODS: Ten archaeological endocarps were selected from previously published archaeological assemblages based on the integrity of their outlines, apex-base morphology and overall preservation quality. Quantitative descriptors describing

Chasing the "White Plague" in the Barbaricum of the Carpathian Basin - A case with tuberculous meningitis discovered in a Sarmatian-period (2nd-3rd-century-CE) storage pit from the archaeological site of Kiskundorozsma-Daruhalom-dűlő II (Hungary).

The aim of our paper is to demonstrate a case (KD429) with tuberculous meningitis (TBM) from the 2nd-3rd‒century‒CE Carpathian Basin. The skeleton of KD429 was subject to a detailed macromorphological evaluation, focusing on the detection of pathological lesions likely related to tuberculosis (TB). It was the presence of endocranial alterations, especially the TB-specific granular impressions, based on which the diagnosis of TBM was established in KD429. Besides KD429, only eight cases with TB have been published from the Sarmatian-period (1st-5th centuries CE) Carpathian Basin. Reports of arc

White plague among the "forgotten people" from the Barbaricum of the Carpathian Basin-Cases with tuberculosis from the Sarmatian-period (3rd-4th centuries CE) archaeological site of Hódmezővásárhely-Kenyere-ér, Bereczki-tanya (Hungary).

Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection that is well-known in the palaeopathological record because it can affect the skeleton and consequently leaves readily identifiable macroscopic alterations. Palaeopathological case studies provide invaluable information about the spatio-temporal distribution of TB in the past. This is true for those archaeological periods and geographical regions from when and where no or very few TB cases have been published until now-as in the Sarmatian period (1st-5th centuries CE) in the Barbaricum of the Carpathian Basin. The aim of our paper is to discuss five n

A method for estimating age of Danish medieval sub-adults based on long bone length.

The preferred method for aging archaeological sub-adult skeletons is by dental examination. In cases where no dental records are available, age estimation may be performed according to epiphyseal union, skeletal elements or diaphyseal lengths. Currently no data have been produced specifically for aging archaeological Danish sub-adults from the medieval period based on diaphyseal lengths. The problem with using data on Danish samples, which have been derived from a different population, is the possibility of skewing age estimates. In this study 58 Danish archaeological sub-adults were examined,
