Dental caries patterns and oral health behaviors in Arizona infants and toddlers.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to use tooth eruption sequence, and a tooth- and surface-specific caries analysis method to determine: (1) the temporal relationship between tooth eruption and caries onset; (2) the validity of pre-existing concepts of caries progression; and (3) the relationship of certain putative health behaviors with caries prevalence. METHODS: A total of 2,428 Arizona children aged 6-36-months, who were recruited from WIC programs (a federal program for low-income children at nutritional risk), health fairs and private day care centers, received visual dental caries

Outpatient management of diabetes mellitus in five Arizona Medicare managed care plans.

We report findings on the outpatient management of diabetes mellitus in Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in five Arizona Medicare-managed care plans. These findings are the baseline of an ongoing collaboration between the Health Services Advisory Group, Inc., Arizona's Peer Review Organization (PRO), and the five plans whose object is improved care of diabetes patients. The purpose of the study was to determine congruity between quality indicators identified by the five plans and the care actually received by diabetes patients enrolled in the five plans. The five plans agreed on a common set of

Psoroptic scabies in desert bighorn sheep (ovis Canadensis nelsoni) from northwestern Arizona.

Scabies due to infestation by Psoroptes ovis was monitored from 1979 through 1981 in Nelson's desert bighorn sheep in northwestern Arizona. Visual examinations for ear lesions and evaluations of ear scrapings were used to assess the prevalence of mites in sheep that were live-captured or killed during the hunting season. The prevalence of psoroptic scabies in live-captured sheep for the years 1979, 1980, and 1981, was 25%, 25%, and 0%, respectively, and was higher in rams (1979, 65%; 1980, 100%) than in ewes (1979, 11%; 1980, 0%). The severity of ear lesions was also greater in the males. The

Characterization of anemia following rattlesnake envenomation in Arizona: a retrospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Rattlesnakes in the southwestern United States possess hemotoxic venom associated with coagulopathy and bleeding. While the two complications are related, they are distinct entities, and no known study has evaluated the phenomenon of venom-induced anemia. METHODS: A chart review was performed using electronic health records from the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center between January 1st, 2017 and December 31st, 2022. Included charts were characterized by the presence or absence of anemia (hemoglobin <100 g/L), and clinical and demographic information were compared betwee

Emergency Department Management of Acute Heatstroke: A Retrospective Analysis from Phoenix, Arizona.

INTRODUCTION: The global incidence and severity of severe heat illness is on the rise. The increasing number of summer heatwaves in Phoenix, Arizona, gave us a distinctive opportunity to better understand the impact on the clinical presentation and management of acute heatstroke. Our primary objective in this study was to describe the prehospital and emergency department (ED) clinical presentation, treatment, and outcomes of patients with acute heatstroke at a single hospital system during the summers of 2021 and 2022 in Phoenix. METHODS: This was a descriptive, retrospective observational st

Characteristics Associated With Breakthrough Congenital Syphilis in Florida and Arizona, 2018-2022.

Congenital syphilis (CS) can occur despite timely identification and adequate treatment of maternal syphilis (breakthrough CS). We examined associations between maternal characteristics and prevalence of breakthrough CS. Having primary/secondary syphilis, a higher maximum nontreponemal titer, and treatment initiation closer to delivery were associated with a higher prevalence of breakthrough CS.

Neighbourhood Deprivation and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus in Arizona From the AzPEARS Study.

BACKGROUND: The maternal population residing in rural areas, tribal lands or near the United States-Mexico border are at high risk for adverse pregnancy complications, notably gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Few studies have considered the socioeconomic status (SES) attributes of neighbourhoods on maternal health during gestation. Given that the national and global rate of GDM is rising, this analysis moves beyond individual-level factors and investigates the role of neighbourhood deprivation on GDM risk. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between neighbourhood deprivation and ri

Population-Level Epidemiology of Concussion Concurrent with Domestic Violence in Arizona, USA.

Domestic violence (DV) is a chronic societal epidemic that often involves physical assault to the head, neck, and face, which increases the risk of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) in DV victims. However, epidemiological data on the extent of TBI-DV at the population scale remain sparse. We performed a statewide, multi-institution, retrospective review of all medical records for patients diagnosed with a concussion, the most common type of TBI, at health care facilities in Arizona, USA, that were licensed by Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) during 2016-2018. De-identified records we

Epidemiology of Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury and Hypothalamic-Pituitary Disorders in Arizona.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) in children can result in long-lasting social, cognitive, and neurological impairments. In adults, TBI can lead to endocrinopathies (endocrine system disorders), but this is infrequently reported in children. Untreated endocrinopathies can elevate risks of subsequent health issues, such that early detection in pediatric TBI survivors can initiate clinical interventions. To understand the risk of endocrinopathies following pediatric TBI, we identified patients who had experienced a TBI and subsequently developed a new-onset hypothalamic regulated endocrinopathy (n =

Delays in Coccidioidomycosis Diagnosis and Relationship to Healthcare Utilization, Phoenix, Arizona, USA1.

We developed an electronic records methodology to programmatically estimate the date of first appearance of coccidioidomycosis symptoms in patients. We compared the diagnostic delay with overall healthcare utilization charges. Many patients (46%) had delays in diagnosis of >1 month. Billed healthcare charges before diagnosis increased with length of delay.

Intraspecific variation of Centruroides sculpturatus scorpion venom from two regions of Arizona.

This study investigated geographic variability in the venom of Centruroides sculpturatus scorpions from different biotopes. Venom from scorpions collected from two different regions in Arizona; Santa Rita Foothills (SR) and Yarnell (Yar) were analyzed. We found differences between venoms, mainly in the two most abundant peptides; SR (CsEv2e and CsEv1f) and Yar (CsEv2 and CsEv1c) identified as natural variants of CsEv1 and CsEv2. Sequence analyses of these peptides revealed conservative amino acid changes between variants, which may underlie biological activity against arthropods. A third pepti

Concentration of trichloroethylene in breast milk and household water from Nogales, Arizona.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency has identified quantification of trichloroethylene (TCE), an industrial solvent, in breast milk as a high priority need for risk assessment. Water and milk samples were collected from 20 households by a lactation consultant in Nogales, Arizona. Separate water samples (including tap, bottled, and vending machine) were collected for all household uses: drinking, bathing, cooking, and laundry. A risk factor questionnaire was administered. Liquid-liquid extraction with diethyl ether was followed by GC-MS for TCE quantification in water. Breast milk

Structured review of the use of the Arizona sexual experiences scale in clinical settings.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 40% of women and 30% of men describe sexual dysfunction, although recognition in medical settings is suboptimal, due to problems in reporting and eliciting concerns relating to sexual function and satisfaction. Screening questionnaires may help to support this aspect of clinical practice. The Arizona sexual experiences scale (ASEX) includes items that quantify sex drive, arousal, vaginal lubrication or penile erection, ability to reach orgasm, and satisfaction from orgasm. METHOD: We investigated the validity and other psychometric properties of the ASEX, and the fin
