Protocols for Diagnosis and Management of Arthropod Bite Allergies in Humans.

Allergic diseases have increased significantly in recent decades, with a higher incidence of severe manifestations such as anaphylaxis. This increase is attributed mainly to environmental factors associated with the Western lifestyle that alter the epithelial barrier, promoting sensitization to allergens, such as those from arthropods. Hymenoptera (bees and wasps) are the most implicated arthropods. The sting introduces a venom composed of highly sensitizing proteins that are capable of triggering reactions ranging from local and mild to potentially fatal systemic reactions. The incidence is h

Phylogenetic insights into the transmission dynamics of arthropod-borne viruses.

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) impose substantial global health and economic burdens, affecting both human and animal populations. These viruses - including dengue, chikungunya, Rift Valley fever, Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever and bluetongue viruses - have complex transmission cycles involving vertebrate hosts and arthropod vectors. Their circulation in livestock and wildlife complicate surveillance, as traditional epidemiological approaches rely mainly on human clinical data. Climate change and increasing global interconnectedness are accelerating their emergence and invasion, neces

Anti-inflammatory activities of arthropod peptides: a systematic review.

Peptides obtained from different animal species have gained importance recently due to research that aims to develop biopharmaceuticals with therapeutic potential. In this sense, arthropod venoms have drawn attention, not only because of their toxicity but mainly for the search for molecules with various bioactivities, including anti-inflammatory activity. The purpose of the present study is to gather data available in the literature on new peptides derived from arthropod species with anti-inflammatory potential. This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Revi

Sphingomyelinases in a journey to combat arthropod-borne pathogen transmission.

Ixodes scapularis ticks feed on humans and other vertebrate hosts and transmit several pathogens of public health concern. Tick saliva is a complex mixture of bioactive proteins, lipids and immunomodulators, such as I. scapularis sphingomyelinase (IsSMase)-like protein, an ortholog of dermonecrotoxin SMase D found in the venom of Loxosceles spp. of spiders. IsSMase modulates the host immune response towards Th2, which suppresses Th1-mediated cytokines to facilitate pathogen transmission. Arboviruses utilize exosomes for their transmission from tick to the vertebrate host, and exosomes derived

Health Hazards Associated with Arthropod Infestation of Stored Products.

Insects and mites are common inhabitants and accidental invaders of food, including durable commodities, and their presence can have both direct and indirect effects on human health. The most common direct effect is contamination of food with arthropod fragments and related contaminants, which may be allergenic or even carcinogenic. The most important indirect effect is that their presence can change the storage microenvironment, making durable products suitable for the rapid development of fungi and other microorganisms. Some of these fungi can produce toxins (e.g., aflatoxins) that endanger

Arthropod assassins: Crawling biochemists with diverse toxin pharmacopeias.

The millions of extant arthropod species are testament to their evolutionary success that can at least partially be attributed to venom usage, which evolved independently in at least 19 arthropod lineages. While some arthropods primarily use venom for predation (e.g., spiders and centipedes) or defense (e.g., bees and caterpillars), it can also have more specialised functions (e.g. in parasitoid wasps to paralyse arthropods for their brood to feed on) or even a combination of functions (e.g. the scorpion Parabuthus transvaalicus can deliver a prevenom for predator deterrence and a venom for pr

Exaggerated Arthropod Bite: A Case Report and Review of the Mimics.

Exaggerated arthropod bite reactions causing hemorrhagic or necrotic bullous lesions can mimic other serious conditions such as cutaneous anthrax, brown recluse spider bite, and tularemia. A 55- year-old, healthy woman presented to the emergency department with a 3.5-centimeter painless, collapsed hemorrhagic bulla at the left costal margin. She was afebrile and had no systemic symptoms. Laboratory evaluation was unremarkable. She was prescribed silver sulfadiazine cream and mupirocin ointment. The area denuded two days later and the lesion completely healed. This case illustrates the broad di

Skin manifestations of arthropod-borne infection in Latin America.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Arthropods are a significant cause of human skin lesions and infections, especially in Latin America. This review summarizes recent articles on the cutaneous manifestations of arthropod-borne diseases, with an emphasis on those diseases causing direct skin damage but also considering those systemic diseases with cutaneous manifestations. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies have shown a variety and increase of cutaneous manifestations caused by arthropod-borne infections, including petechiae, purpura, ulcers, nodules, atrophic, miliary and hyperpigmented lesions. Although unspecific, w

New insights on arthropod toxins that potentiate erectile function.

The use of natural substances for the treatment of diseases or injuries is an ancient practice of many cultures. According to folklore, natural aphrodisiacs may help to raise libido and increase desire. The supposed aphrodisiacs mainly include a plethora of preparations of plants, among other substances. However, the real boundary between myth and reality has not been established yet in most cases and such boundaries must be drawn by scientific methods. A growing interest of the scientific community has been focused on animal venoms, especially those from arthropods, i.e. spiders and scorpions

Immunological consequences of arthropod vector-derived salivary factors.

Diseases, such as malaria, dengue, leishmaniasis and tick-borne encephalitis, affect a substantial percentage of the world's population and continue to result in significant morbidity and mortality. One common aspect of these diseases is that the pathogens that cause them are transmitted by the bite of an infected arthropod (e.g. mosquito, sand fly, tick). The pathogens are delivered into the skin of the mammalian host along with arthropod saliva, which contains a wide variety of bioactive molecules. These saliva components are capable of altering hemostasis and immune responses and may contri

Arthropod-borne diseases associated with political and social disorder.

The living conditions and the crowded situations of the homeless, war refugees, or victims of a natural disaster provide ideal conditions for the spread of lice, fleas, ticks, flies and mites. The consequence of arthropod infestation in these situations is underestimated. Along with louse-borne infections such as typhus, trench fever, and relapsing fever, the relationship between Acinetobacter spp.-infected lice and bacteremia in the homeless is not clear. Murine typhus, tungiasis, and myiasis are likely underestimated, and there has been a reemergence of bed bugs. Attempted eradication of the

[Neglected arthropod-borne viral infections in the Czech Republic].

Central European encephalitis is the most common arthropod-borne virus disease in the Czech Republic, with the mean annual incidence of 6 cases per 100 000 population. However, seven less known arboviruses (Flavivirus West Nile, Bunyavirus Tahyna, Bunyavirus Batai, Bunyavirus Sedlec, Bunyavirus Lednice, Orbivirus Tribee, Uukuvirus Uukuniemi) also circulate in this country, of which West Nile, Tahyna, Tribec and possibly Batai have been reported to cause human disease. Moreover, antibodies against two other pathogenic viruses found in Europe, i.e. Alphavirus Sindbis and Coltivirus Eyach, have b

[Children arthropod bites protective measures: insecticides and repellents].

Vector transmitted diseases are often a serious threat for child health, especially for children traveller in tropical regions. Few arthropod borne diseases are preventable by immunization or chimioprophylaxis. Prevention of most of them is based on personal protection against arthropod bites. The evidence of its efficacy has been established by the use of impregnated bed nets, impregnated clothes with permethrin or mosquito repellent which reduced significantly child malaria morbidity and mortality in endemic countries. These personal protective measures are able to minimize arthropod bites a

Systemic immediate allergic reactions to arthropod stings and bites.

Most of the encounters with biting and stinging insects result in more or less pronounced localized reactions. Typically, urticarial wheals and papular reactions are observed. Less often local bullous or hemorrhagic or disseminated papular reactions, particularly in children and immunologically naive adults, may be seen. With the exception of bee and wasp venom allergies, immediate-type allergic reactions to arthropod stings and bites are rare. Systemic IgE-mediated hypersensitivity has also been reported from additional hymenoptera species, e.g. hornets, bumble bees and ants. Rare are systemi

Cytotoxic effects of arthropod venoms on various cultured cells.

The action of arthropod venoms is important to predators in search of prey and to humans as incidental victims or as a source for pharmacologically active compounds. Venoms from 30 arthropods (including 26 spider species) were assessed for cytotoxicity using cultured cells from one insect (Sf9) and three mammalian (murine neuroblastoma and macrophages and human osteosarcoma) sources. The most cytotoxic venoms to the four cell lines were from predatory jumping spiders (Salticidae, Phidippus sp.) and a centipede (Scolopenra sp.), with concentrations for 50% response of 1-8 microg venom per ml.
