Transcriptome profiles of red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii hematopoietic tissue in response to WSSV challenge.

The crayfish Procambarus clarkii could achieve a high cumulative mortality after WSSV infections. To better understand the immune response to WSSV in hematopoietic tissue, the present study investigated the immunological response of P. clarkii and analyzed the expression of some hematopoietic cytokines. After assembly, there was an average of 47,712,411 clean reads were obtained in control and treatment groups. A total of 35,945 unigenes were discovered with N50 length of 1554 bp. Under functional classification, enrichment, and pathway analysis using different database, there were about 257 d

Mechanistic understanding of low methylmercury bioaccessibility from crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) muscle tissue.

Recent research indicates that dietary exposure to mercury and other metals from crayfish consumption poses a human health concern, particularly in regions with high crayfish-consuming populations. To better understand consumption risk from methylmercury (MeHg), we quantified MeHg bioaccessibility in edible tail muscle of cooked red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii, collected from seven cities in China), versus cooked fillet tissue of two finfish species: yellow croaker (Larimichthys polyactis) and snakehead (Channa argus). Results indicated that digestive solubilization rate (DSR) of MeHg

Don't be Half-Educated About Haff Disease in Louisiana.

Cases of Haff disease, a syndrome of severe myalgia and rhabdomyolysis, have been reported after eating cooked fish in Europe and the US. A retrospective review of US cases was conducted to identify seafood vectors, describe presenting manifestations, and compare the Haff disease toxidrome with other seafood-borne toxidromes. Internet search engines were queried to identify all US reports of Haff disease. The case definition of Haff disease required cooked seafood ingestion history within 24 hours and markedly elevated serum creatine kinase (CK) with CK-muscle/brain (MB) fraction < 5 percent.

Photodynamic effect of hypericin and a water-soluble derivative on isolated crayfish neuron and surrounding glial cells.

Hypericin (Hyp) has been proposed as a fluorochrome for fluorescence diagnostics and as a photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy of cancer. However, its insolubility in water is a serious drawback. A novel water-soluble hypericin derivative (Hyp-S) has been constructed, using polyvinylpyrrolidone as a carrier. We used the crayfish stretch receptor, consisting of receptor neuron and satellite glial cells, for comparison of the photodynamic effects of Hyp and Hyp-S. Hyp-S was more toxic in the dark than Hyp and inactivated the neurons at concentrations exceeding 4 microM while Hyp was toxic to

The mechanotransduction of the crayfish stretch receptor neurone can be differentially activated or inactivated by local anaesthetics.

The effect of the local anaesthetics lidocaine, its meta-isomer, LL33, bupivacaine, tetracaine and procaine on the transducer properties of the stretch receptor neurone of the crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus was investigated using a two microelectrode voltage clamp. Lidocaine increased the receptor current whereas LL33, bupivacaine and tetracaine reduced the receptor current in a reversible dose-dependent way. Procaine did not affect the receptor responses. The onset of the effect was generally slow in the order of minutes. Lidocaine increased the conductance of the mechanotransducer 50 +/-

Predation of Biomphalaria and non-target molluscs by the crayfish Procambarus clarkii: implications for the biological control of schistosomiasis.

The North American crayfish Procambarus clarkii was examined under laboratory conditions for its ability to prey on Biomphalaria pfeifferi and B. glabrata, molluscan intermediate hosts of human schistosomiasis, and other, non-target gastropod species. Both male and female adult crayfish significantly reduced survival of neonate snails, even though alternative animal and plant foods were both available. In subsequent experiments, no differences in snail consumption were detected, for either adult or juvenile crayfish, in the presence or absence of a plant food alternative. Both adult and juveni

Ecotoxicological effects of pharmaceuticals and personal care products on the microbiome and oxidative stress of freshwater crayfish Faxonius obscurus.

The ecotoxicity of individual pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in freshwaters is well documented. However, their combined effects as mixtures on aquatic animals and their associated microbiomes remain poorly understood. This study examined the response of freshwater crayfish, Faxonius obscurus, to a mixture of three frequently co-occurring PPCPs, i.e., carbamazepine, estradiol, and triclosan, at environmentally relevant concentrations (10 or 100 μg/L). Our results revealed dose-dependent disruptions of crayfish microbiomes across multiple body locations upon a 96-hr PPCP expo

Enhanced removal of Cr (VI) in constructed wetland with Fe-Ni-LDH-modified crayfish shell biochar: Performance, removal pathways and synergy mechanisms of substrate-microorganism.

In this study, Fe-Ni-layered double hydroxide modified crayfish shell biochar substrate (Fe-Ni-LDH@CSBC) was successfully prepared and introduced into constructed wetland (CW) to research the Cr(VI) removal mechanism through substrate adsorption and microbial action. Adsorption experiments demonstrated the equilibrium adsorption capacities of Fe-Ni-LDH@CSBC for Cr(VI) could reach 1058.48 (C0=10 mg/L) and 1394.59 mg/kg (C0=20 mg/L), respectively. The CW with Fe-Ni-LDH@CSBC showed higher removal efficiencies of COD, TN, TP, and Cr(VI), which respectively reached 72.9 %, 66.8 %, 79.6 %, and 99.3

An outbreak of crayfish rickettsiosis caused by Coxiella cheraxi in redclaw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) imported to Israel from Australia.

The redclaw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) is a freshwater decapod crustacean, cultured in numerous countries worldwide for both food and ornamental purposes. Redclaw crayfish has become an important aquaculture species due to its physical and biological traits, relatively easy breeding, and a short growing-out period to reach commercial size. Bacterial infections are the second-most studied pathogens of freshwater crayfish. However, redclaw crayfish rickettsiosis, caused by Coxiella cheraxi, was reported in only a few scientific papers in the early 2000s, in Australia and Ecuador. Coxiella

Recent insights into anti-WSSV immunity in crayfish.

White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is currently the most severely viral pathogen for farmed crustaceans such as shrimp and crayfish, which has been causing huge economic losses for crustaceans farming worldwide every year. Unfortunately, study on the molecular mechanisms of WSSV has been restricted by the lack of crustacean cell lines for WSSV propagation as well as the incompletely annotated genomes for host species, resulting in limited elucidation for WSSV pathogenesis at present. In addition to the findings of anti-WSSV response in shrimp, some of novel cellular events involved in WSSV infec

Confirmation that candidatus Coxiella cheraxi from redclaw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) is a close relative of Coxiella burnetii, the agent of Q-fever.

A Coxiella sp. closely related to the agent of Q-fever, Coxiella burnetii, has been associated with mortalities in redclaw crayfish, (Cherax quadricarinatus), in farms and experimental facilities for three decades. Limited sequence data including 16S rRNA have placed the rickettsial species as a new species, candidatus C. cheraxi closely related to C. burnetii. MinION sequencing was conducted on the last remaining sample from an outbreak of disease, TO-98. The accuracy of base pair reads was mostly 99·9% (error rate 1 in 1000) or better. After filtering for reads of co-isolated Citrobacter fre

Monitoring of noble, signal and narrow-clawed crayfish using environmental DNA from freshwater samples.

For several hundred years freshwater crayfish (Crustacea-Decapoda-Astacidea) have played an important ecological, cultural and culinary role in Scandinavia. However, many native populations of noble crayfish Astacus astacus have faced major declines during the last century, largely resulting from human assisted expansion of non-indigenous signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus that carry and transmit the crayfish plague pathogen. In Denmark, also the non-indigenous narrow-clawed crayfish Astacus leptodactylus has expanded due to anthropogenic activities. Knowledge about crayfish distribution

North American paragonimiasis: epidemiology and diagnostic strategies.

Paragonimiasis is a zoonotic, food-borne trematode infection that affects around 23 million people in Asia, Africa and the Americas. North American paragonimiasis, caused by Paragonimus kellicotti, is a common infection of crustacean-feeding mammals in parts of the USA and Canada. Although infection rates in crayfish are very high in some areas, human infections are rare and depend on the consumption of raw or undercooked crayfish. Human infections can be easily prevented and treated, but proper diagnosis of paragonimiasis is a problem. Paragonimus lung flukes often cause serious disease sympt

Effect of experimental exposure to differently virulent Aphanomyces astaci strains on the immune response of the noble crayfish Astacus astacus.

European crayfish are sensitive to the crayfish plague pathogen, Aphanomyces astaci, carried by North American crayfish species due to their less effective immune defence mechanisms against this disease. During a controlled infection experiment with a susceptible crayfish species Astacus astacus using three A. astaci strains (representing genotype groups A, B, and E), we investigated variation in their virulence and in crayfish immune defence indicators (haemocyte density, phenoloxidase activity, and production of reactive oxygen species). Experimental crayfish were exposed to two dosages of A

Histological changes and antioxidant enzyme activity in signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) associated with sub-acute peracetic acid exposure.

Peracetic acid (PAA) is a powerful disinfectant recently adopted as a therapeutic agent in aquaculture. A concentration of 10 mg L(-1) PAA effectively suppresses zoospores of Aphanomyces astaci, the agent of crayfish plague. To aid in establishing safe therapeutic guideline, the effects of PAA on treated crayfish were investigated through assessment of histological changes and oxidative damage. Adult female signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus (n = 135) were exposed to 2 mg L(-1) and 10 mg L(-1) of PAA for 7 days followed by a 7 day recovery period in clean water.
