Extracts of the aerial parts of the yellow star thistle (Centaurea solstitialis L.) were prepared using petroleum ether, chloroform and methanol and toxicity assessed in primary cell cultures of striatum, frontal cortex and mesencephalon, containing the substantia nigra or raphe nucleus from the brain of the foetal rat. Chloroform extracts significantly reduced the percentage of live cells whereas the petroleum ether extract was inactive. The ability of the methanol extract to reduce the percentage of live cells could not be distinguished from the effects of the vehicle controls for methanol.

Schistosomiasis, caused by helminth flatworms of the genus Schistosoma, is a neglected tropical disease that afflicts over 230 million people worldwide. Currently, treatment is achieved with only one drug, praziquantel (PZQ). In this regard, the roots of Solidago microglossa (Asteraceae) and Aristolochia cymbifera (Aristolochiaceae) are popularly used as anthelmintic. Despite their medicinal use against helminthiasis, such as schistosomiasis, A. cymbifera, and S. microglossa have not been evaluated against S. mansoni. Then, in this work, the in vitro antischistosomal activity of the crude extr

Functional traits express the ecological and evolutionary attributes of individuals that compose taxa, providing robust criteria to detect speciation when integrated with phylogenies. We tested this approach in Sonchus asper (L.) Hill, a putatively self-fertilizing annual weed that has recently been reported to exhibit extensive floral and life-form variation across the northern Mediterranean. This variability was already documented in the nineteenth century, but it is incongruent with current subspecific classifications based on leaf arrangement. We sampled 40 populations encompassing this va

We sequenced the chloroplast genome of Inula minipetala and analyzed its phylogenetic relationships. The total length of the chloroplast genome was 150,781 bp, including a large single-copy region of 82,448 bp, a small single-copy region of 18,435 bp, and two inverted repeat regions of 24,949 bp each. It contained 129 genes, including 84 protein-coding sequences (CDSs), 37 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis using 78 CDSs from 33 taxa showed that I. minipetala is sister to I. linariifolia. These results provide fundamental genomic data for evolutionary and conservation stud

Morphological data are critical for taxonomy, evolutionary biology, ecology, and species identification. However, no widely used central database for morphological data exists as it does for DNA sequences or specimen data. Most of these data are "locked up" in taxonomic literature. Various scripted and Natural Language Processing approaches have been explored to automate the extraction of morphological data from taxonomic descriptions. Here, we explore the feasibility of using Large Language Models (LLMs) and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to rapidly extract data for 51 morphological char

We evaluated the acaricidal activity of Acmella oleracea methanol extract and spilanthol on Rhipicephalus microplus and Dermacentor nitens. The extract was made through maceration with methanol. From this extract, a dichloromethane fraction with 99% spilanthol was obtained and tested on R. microplus larvae and engorged females and D. nitens larvae. For evaluation against larvae, the modified larval packet test was used, and both the methanol extract and dichloromethane fraction were tested at concentrations of 0.2-50mg/mL. The modified larval packet test was also used in the lethal time (LT) t

The eco-friendly management of mosquitoes with novel and effective larvicides and oviposition deterrents is a crucial challenge to prevent outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases. However, most of the herbal formulations tested in these years showed LC50 values higher of 40 ppm, and significant oviposition deterrent activity only when tested at relatively higher doses (> 50 μg/ml). Herein, we studied the chemical composition of the Galinsoga parviflora essential oil (EO). This plant is an annual herb native to South America naturalized all over the world. We tested the EO larvicidal and ovipositi

In Brazil, Leishmania infantum is transmitted mainly through the bite of the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis, the main visceral leishmaniasis (VL) vector. Although the most common vector control strategy is the application of synthetic insecticides, growing resistance to these products has sparked interest in developing new alternatives. In this context, plants emerge as a viable possibility due to the diversity of secondary metabolites with insecticidal potential. This work aimed to chemically characterize the essential oil of Pseudobrickellia brasiliensis and evaluate its toxicity on L. longi

Mosquitoes are major carriers of diseases such as dengue, lymphatic filariasis, malaria, chikungunya, and Japanese encephalitis, as they feed on blood and act as ectoparasites. This study focuses on the effectiveness of a plant-derived insecticide, specifically the hexane extract from Sphaeranthus indicus leaves, against Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes. By conducting phytochemical extraction, fractionation, and spectroscopic analysis, ten fractions were isolated. One of these fractions showed significant mosquito-killing activity, with nonacosane identified as the primary a

Important arboviruses for public health such as Dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya are transmitted by mosquito vectors, primarily Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. The control of populations of these mosquitoes can be carried out by mechanical, chemical, and biological control. In view of the environmental impacts caused by synthetic chemical insecticides, the search for botanical larvicides with larvicidal potential has intensified. The objective of this work is to investigate the occurrence of acetylcholinesterase inhibition and histopathological alterations in Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictu
