Hearing investigations (speech, tuning fork, pure-tone threshold audiometry) were conducted in 35 patients (18 males and 17 females aged 30-55) with acute subarachnoidal hemorrhage (ASH) which was spontaneous in 16 and resultant from rupture of the arterial aneurysm in 19 patients. Hearing problems in elderly patients cannot be evaluated completely with conventional audiological tests in most cases. Two hundred and one subjects aged 60 years or more complaining of hearing problems were studied. A pilot study is presented in which 12 selected patients, ages 3-11 years, were evaluated for a palatal defect utilizing trispiral tomography. INTRODUCTION: Normal-hearing people often have complaints about the ability to recognize speech in noise. Such disabilities are not typically assessed with conventional audiometry. Suprathreshold temporal deficits might contribute to reduced word recognition in noise as well as reduced temporally based binaural release of masking for speech. Extended high-frequency audibility (>8 kHz) has also been shown to contribute to speech perception in noise.
