Neuroplasticity of auditory cortex after stape surgery for otosclerosis: a magnetoencephalographic study.

Aim of the present study was to investigate the tonotopic reorganization of the primary auditory cortex in otosclerotic patients following functional stapedioplasty. Characteristics of auditory cortex activation have been evaluated in a series of 10 otosclerotic patients before and after surgery. In these patients, a magnetoencephalographic recording of evoked magnetic fields has been performed by means of tone-burst monoaural stimulation with frequency octaves between 250 and 2000 Hz. Brain topography of cortex response generators (wave N100m) in patients with otosclerosis has been compared w

Differential acute effects of fluoxetine on frontal and auditory cortex networks in vitro.

Primary cultures of neuronal networks grown on microelectrode arrays were used to quantify acute effects of fluoxetine (Prozac) on spontaneous spike and burst activity. For frontal cortex cultures, fluoxetine showed consistent inhibitory effects and terminated activity at 10-16 microM. IC(50) mean+/-S.E. for spike rates was 5.4+/-0.7 microM (n=15). For auditory cortex cultures, fluoxetine caused excitation at 1-10 microM, initial inhibition at 15 microM, and activity cessation at 20-25 microM. The spike rate IC(50) was 15.9+/-1.0 microM (n=11). Fluoxetine did not change the action potential wa

Anesthesia changes frequency tuning of neurons in the rat primary auditory cortex.

The vast majority of investigations on central auditory processing so far were conducted under the influence of an anesthetic agent. It remains unclear, however, to what extend even basic response properties of central auditory neurons are influenced by this experimental manipulation. We used a combination of chronic recording in unrestrained animals, computer-controlled randomized acoustic stimulation, and statistical evaluation of responses to directly compare the response characteristics of single neurons in the awake and anesthetized state. Thereby we were able to quantify the effects of p

Representation of a voice onset time continuum in primary auditory cortex of the cat.

The representation of voice onset time (VOT) for 197 single units in cat primary auditory cortex was studied for a /ba/-/pa/ continuum in which VOT was varied in 5-ms steps from 0 to 70 ms. The effect of stimulus intensity, characteristic frequency of the neurons, and age of the animals was investigated. The minimum VOT represented in onset responses to both the voiceless and voiced parts of the sound (a "double-on" response) was dependent on overall stimulus level. An interaction was found between the efficacy of the burst in evoking neural activity and the size of the subsequent response to

Effect of bilateral auditory cortex lesions on absolute thresholds in Japanese macaques.

1. The behavioral audiograms of four Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) were assessed before and after receiving two-stage bilateral lesions of auditory cortex. Thresholds were assessed for each ear with the use of insertion earphones. 2. The bilateral lesions resulted in a large initial hearing loss followed by partial recovery that left the animals with a permanent hearing loss in both ears. 3. The initial hearing loss consisted of a total insensitivity to sound in the ear contralateral to the second lesion with limited hearing in the other ear. However, the animal with the most complete les

Role of prefrontal cortex in auditory-verbal hallucinations: Actor or passive bystander?

In this paper we discuss the role of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in schizophrenia and particularly in auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH). The paper starts with a review of the concept of hypofrontality in the 1970s and a view of PFC as a passive bystander unable to regulate or control internally generated sensory impulses. We further discuss the relationship between PFC and memory processes and the hypothesis that AVH experiences occur because of intrusions of negative emotional memories, and regulation of the emotional content of the voices. Similarly, AVH experiences can be the result of f

Unraveling the effects of selective auditory attention in ERPs: From the brainstem to the cortex.

A little over fifty years ago, it was reported that selectively attending to one of two dichotically presented tone sequences enhances the major N1 component of the cortical event-related potential (ERP) to the attended tones. The present study revisited this classic experiment but replaced the tones in one ear with frequency-modulated "chirps" that were designed to activate the entire cochlea simultaneously and thereby elicit robust ERPs in the auditory brainstem pathways. Participants attended selectively to the sounds in one ear at a time with the task of reporting occasional targets of low

Phonological Representations of Auditory and Visual Speech in the Occipito-temporal Cortex and Beyond.

Speech is a multisensory signal that can be extracted from the voice and the lips. Previous studies suggested that occipital and temporal regions encode both auditory and visual speech features but their location and nature remain unclear. We characterized brain activity using fMRI (13 males and 11 females) to functionally and individually define bilateral fusiform face areas (FFA), the left word-selective ventral occipito-temporal cortex (word-VOTC), an audiovisual speech region in the left superior temporal sulcus (lSTS); and control regions in bilateral scene-selective parahippocampal place

Auditory Cortex Thickness Is Associated With N100 Amplitude in Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: The auditory cortex (AC) may play a central role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and auditory hallucinations (AH). Previous schizophrenia studies report thinner AC and impaired AC function, as indicated by decreased N100 amplitude of the auditory evoked potential. However, whether these structural and functional alterations link to AH in schizophrenia remain poorly understood. STUDY DESIGN: Patients with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SCZspect), including patients with a lifetime experience of AH (AH+), without (AH-), and healthy controls underwent magne

Blast Exposure Disrupts the Tonotopic Frequency Map in the Primary Auditory Cortex.

Blast exposure can cause various auditory disorders including tinnitus, hyperacusis, and other central auditory processing disorders. While this is suggestive of pathologies in the central auditory system, the impact of blast exposure on central auditory processing remains poorly understood. Here we examined the effects of blast shockwaves on acoustic response properties and the tonotopic frequency map in the auditory cortex. We found that multiunits recorded from the auditory cortex exhibited higher acoustic thresholds and broader frequency tuning in blast-exposed animals. Furthermore, the fr

Broadened population-level frequency tuning in the auditory cortex of tinnitus patients.

Tinnitus is a phantom auditory perception without an external sound source and is one of the most common public health concerns that impair the quality of life of many individuals. However, its neural mechanisms remain unclear. We herein examined population-level frequency tuning in the auditory cortex of unilateral tinnitus patients with similar hearing levels in both ears using magnetoencephalography. We compared auditory-evoked neural activities elicited by a stimulation to the tinnitus and nontinnitus ears. Objective magnetoencephalographic data suggested that population-level frequency tu

Neuroanatomical study on the tecto-suprageniculate-dorsal auditory cortex pathway in the rat.

Previous anatomical and physiological studies suggest that the superior colliculus sends integrated sensory information to the multimodal cortical areas via the thalamic suprageniculate nucleus (SG). However, the detailed distribution of rat tecto-SG axon terminals and SG neurons projecting to the multimodal cortex, as well as synaptic connections between these tectal axons and SG neurons, remains unclear. In this study, the organization of the tecto-thalamo-cortical pathway was investigated via combined injections of anterograde and retrograde tracers followed by light and electron microscopi

Monaural deprivation disrupts development of binaural selectivity in auditory midbrain and cortex.

Degraded sensory experience during critical periods of development can have adverse effects on brain function. In the auditory system, conductive hearing loss associated with childhood ear infections can produce long-lasting deficits in auditory perceptual acuity, much like amblyopia in the visual system. Here we explore the neural mechanisms that may underlie "amblyaudio" by inducing reversible monaural deprivation (MD) in infant, juvenile, and adult rats. MD distorted tonotopic maps, weakened the deprived ear's representation, strengthened the open ear's representation, and disrupted binaura

Salicylate induced neural changes in the primary auditory cortex of awake cats.

Systemic administration of salicylate at high doses can induce reversible tinnitus and hyperacusis in humans and animals. For this reason, a number of studies have investigated the salicylate-induced changes of neural activity in the auditory cortex (AC); however, most previous studies of the AC were conducted on brain slices or anesthetized animals, which cannot completely represent the actual conditions. Few efforts have been made to examine the neural activity of awake animals, and only recorded the local field potential (LFP) of the AC. In this study, we recorded neural spike activities fr

[Expression of c-fos and NR2A in auditory cortex of rats experienced tinnitus].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the plasticity and the role of plasticity in the auditory cortex of rats which experienced tinnitus by screening the plasticity markers immediately early gene c-fos and the NMDA receptor's subtype NR2A. METHODS: Thirty white Wistar rats were randomly distributed into 3 groups: sodium salicylate group (n = 12), physiological saline group (n = 12) and normal control group (n = 6). Tinnitus were induced by salicylate administration and tested by behavioral conditioning studies, and then immunohistochemical staining was used to observe the expression of c-fos and NR2A in

Environmental enrichment enhances auditory takeover of the occipital cortex in anophthalmic mice.

Enrichment of the environment is an effective means of enhancing neuronal development and plasticity but its effect on the cross-modal compensation resulting from sensory deprivation has never been investigated. The present study used c-Fos immunohistochemistry and dextran-biotin neuronal tracing to examine the reorganization of sensory modalities in the brain of anophthalmic mutant mice (ZRDCT/An) raised in either enriched or standard environments. Auditory stimulation was found to elicit strong neuronal activation in thalamic and cortical structures that are normally visual. An important fin

Effects of salicylate on serotoninergic activities in rat inferior colliculus and auditory cortex.

In vivo microdialysis offers a unique approach to monitor biochemical events related to brain function and metabolism, and has been used extensively in many systems to measure the release of endogenous transmitters and other neuroactive substances during normal and pathological conditions. The characterization of neurotransmitters' changes induced by salicylate in the inferior colliculus (IC) and the auditory cortex (AC) may provide insight into the action of salicylate on the auditory system and, through this, provide a better understanding of neurological mechanism of salicylate-induced tinn

Analysis of neural interactions explains the activation of occipital cortex by an auditory stimulus.

Analysis of neural interactions explains the activation of occipital cortex by an auditory stimulus. J. Neurophysiol. 80: 2790-2796, 1998. Large-scale neural interactions were characterized in human subjects as they learned that an auditory stimulus signaled a visual event. Once learned, activation of left dorsal occipital cortex (increased regional cerebral blood flow) was observed when the auditory stimulus was presented alone. Partial least-squares analysis of the interregional correlations (functional connectivity) between the occipital area and the rest of the brain identified a pattern o

Thalamic projections to fields A, AI, P, and VP in the cat auditory cortex.

Thalamocortical projections to four tonotopic fields (A, AI, P, and VP) of the cat auditory cortex were studied by using combined microelectrode mapping and retrograde axonal transport techniques. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) or HRP combined with either tritiated bovine serum albumin or nuclear yellow was injected into identified best-frequency sites of one or two different fields in the same brain. Arrays of labeled neurons were related to thalamic nuclei defined on the basis of their cytoarchitecture and physiology. In some cases, patterns of labeling were directly compared with thalamic bes
