Impact of sex on clinical outcome in early Multiple Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Previous evidence suggests sex differences in the clinical course of relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), but comprehensive early-stage prospective studies are lacking. We aim to quantify the impact of sex on clinical outcomes in early-stage RRMS. METHODS: Utilizing prospective cohort data, we assessed the impact of biological sex on time-to-relapse, disability progression (Expanded Disability Status Scale [EDSS]), extremity function (Nine-Hole Peg Test, Timed-25-food walk test), cognition (Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test, Symbol Digit Modalities Test), quality-of-li

Multiple Modalities of Sensory Gating Are Affected in Decompensated Tinnitus.

OBJECTIVES: Sensory gating (SG) is the ability to differentiate novel or salient sensory input from known or irrelevant information. In tinnitus, SG is considered dysfunctional, as the brain fails to inhibit internal auditory neural activity before it reaches conscious perception. As a result, the brain continuously processes the tinnitus signal as if it was a new and relevant stimulus. SG can be assessed with a self-report tool, the Sensory Gating Inventory (SGI). DESIGN: A prospective questionnaire study was performed in persons with tinnitus (n = 358) and a control group without tinnitus (

Activity of coenzyme Q 10 (Q-Ter multicomposite) on recovery time in noise-induced hearing loss.

A potential consequence of exposure to noise is a temporary reduction in auditory sensitivity known as temporary threshold shift (TTS), which mainly depends on the intensity and duration of exposure to the noise. Recovery time is related to the amount of initial hearing loss, and the most recovery takes place during the first 15 min following exposure. This study evaluated the efficacy in otoprotection against noise-induced hearing loss of an orally administrated food supplement containing coenzyme Q 10 -Ter. This water-soluble formulation of coenzyme Q 10 shows better bioavailability than the

Field studies: industrial exposures.

The databases and models for the prediction of noise-induced permanent threshold shift (NIPTS) from industrial noise exposures are reviewed. Models available in 1973, compared with later models and data, are shown still to be reasonable. The effect of hearing conservation procedures on the acquisition of new data is discussed. Because of the impact of hearing conservation, new research focus is recommended in three areas: sex differences, newly hired individuals exposed for the first time in occupational noise, and the contribution of nonoccupational noise through the use of questionnaires and

The effect of an age-related hearing loss gene (Ahl) on noise-induced hearing loss and cochlear damage from low-frequency noise.

Inbred C57BL/6J mice carry two copies of an age-related hearing loss gene (Ahl). It has been shown that these mice begin losing high-frequency hearing at two months. Several functional studies have reported that the Ahl gene renders mice more susceptible to noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) than strains which do not carry this gene [e.g., Hear. Res. 93 (1996) 181; Hear. Res. 155 (2001) 82; J. Assoc. Res. Otolaryngol. 2 (2001) 233]. Johnson et al. [Hear. Res. 114 (1997) 83] developed a congenic B6.CAST-+Ahl mouse which carries the wild-type allele from Mus musculus castaneus at the Ahl locus. F

One-day measurement to assess the auditory risks encountered by noise-exposed workers.

UNLABELLED: Noise is one of the most pervasive hazards in the workplace. Despite regulations and preventive measures, noise-induced hearing loss is common. The current reference test is pure-tone air-conduction audiometry (PTA), but this test cannot be used to detect early hearing loss. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we assess one-day auditory fatigue using both PTA and efferent reflexes (ER) measured using DPOAEs associated with contralateral acoustic stimulation (CAS DPOAEs). DESIGN: The noise exposure history, PTA, and ER detection were performed in seven different companies where the L(EX,8h)

Effects of peak pressure and energy of impulses.

Peak pressure has been one of the key parameters of impulse noise used to assess the hazard to hearing. It is used in most international noise exposure limits. France uses an A-weighted energy limit. There is a rough correspondence between peak pressure and the hazard to hearing for a given type of impulse noise. However, when the effects of different types of impulses are compared, this correspondence breaks down. One of the alternate measures of impulse intensity is weighted energy. Weighted energy is appealing for a number of reasons. It does not depend on details of the pressure-time histo

Influence of different kinds of noise on the ear and some physiological and psychological parameters.

The reactions of the human organism to noise are complicated and difficult to separate from other stressors, with the exception of hearing damage. After thorough experimental planning and a rigorous selection of sample persons, the reaction to noise of varying structures was studied by reactions of heart rate, blood pressure, reaction time, the temporary threshold shift (TTS) of hearing and the psychological parameters "Mood" (in German "Befinden"). We found a special kind of TTS dependent on the structure o noise and no effect of physiological parameters. The psychological parameter tended to

Relationship Between Vocal Fatigue Index and Acoustic Voice Scales in Patients With Coronavirus Infection.

OBJECTIVES: The voice quality of patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) seems to be affected due to lower and upper respiratory involvement. Patient-based voice assessment scales are important clinical measures to diagnose voice disorders and monitor treatment outcomes in COVID-19 patients. This study compared vocal fatigue between COVID-19 patients and those with normal voices. Furthermore, the relationship between vocal fatigue and acoustic voice parameters of COVID-19 patients was evaluated. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 30 laboratory-confirmed patients with COVID

Filtering out repetitive auditory stimuli in fibromyalgia: a study of P50 sensory gating.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that fibromyalgia (FM) patients show increased sensory processing of nociceptive and non-nociceptive stimuli and also reduced habituation. Although this pattern of increased reactivity has been established for the somatosensory modality, its generalization to other sensory modalities remains controversial. METHODS: Auditory evoked potentials were obtained using a paired-stimuli paradigm from a sample of 52 FM female patients and 55 healthy women matched for age and socio-economic status. Sensory gating of the P50 component, as indicated by P50 suppression rat

A Preliminary Study Investigating the Self-Reported Effects of Amplification on Singers.

OBJECTIVE: Electronic amplification is integral to contemporary singing performance, yet its effects on singers' vocal experience and function remain underexplored. This study aimed to characterize professional singers' self-reported experiences with amplification, including auditory monitoring challenges, compensatory vocal behaviors, and post-performance outcomes. METHODS: A cross-sectional, survey-based study was conducted using an online questionnaire administered to professional singers who regularly perform with electronic amplification. The survey included items addressing demographics

Mold inhalation causes innate immune activation, neural, cognitive and emotional dysfunction.

Individuals living or working in moldy buildings complain of a variety of health problems including pain, fatigue, increased anxiety, depression, and cognitive deficits. The ability of mold to cause such symptoms is controversial since no published research has examined the effects of controlled mold exposure on brain function or proposed a plausible mechanism of action. Patient symptoms following mold exposure are indistinguishable from those caused by innate immune activation following bacterial or viral exposure. We tested the hypothesis that repeated, quantified doses of both toxic and non

Cortical Regions Activated by Spectrally Degraded Speech in Adults With Single Sided Deafness or Bilateral Normal Hearing.

Those with profound sensorineural hearing loss from single sided deafness (SSD) generally experience greater cognitive effort and fatigue in adverse sound environments. We studied cases with right ear, SSD compared to normal hearing (NH) individuals. SSD cases were significantly less correct in naming last words in spectrally degraded 8- and 16-band vocoded sentences, despite high semantic predictability. Group differences were not significant for less intelligible 4-band sentences, irrespective of predictability. SSD also had diminished BOLD percent signal changes to these same sentences in l

Incomplete recovery of chicken distortion product otoacoustic emissions following acoustic overstimulation.

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were measured in chickens before and after exposure to a 525-Hz pure tone (120 dB SPL, 48 h). The exposure caused extensive hair cell loss and destroyed the tectorial membrane along the abneural edge of the basilar papilla in the low-to-mid-frequency region of the cochlea. Although the lesion was restricted, DPOAEs were greatly depressed at all frequencies immediately after the exposure. The high-frequency DPOAEs gradually recovered to preexposure values after the exposure; however, there was little or no improvement in DPOAEs at test frequenci

Auditory brainstem evoked potentials in blast injury.

Blast injury typically consists of a mixed conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. The sensorineural component includes temporary as well as permanent threshold elevations. Auditory brainstem evoked potentials (ABEP) are sensitive to functional changes in various levels along the auditory pathway. ABEP were recorded from 37 survivors of blasts and latency measures were correlated with clinical findings. Prolongation of peak latencies was correlated with the conductive component of blast-induced hearing loss, as well as with the TTS component of the sensorineural impairment. No central effec

[Rhythmic involuntary movement of the neck in a patient with brainstem encephalitis].

A 36-year-old Japanese woman was admitted to our hospital, because of facial palsy, ophthalmoplegia, cerebellar ataxia, and rhythmic myoclonus of the neck. About a few weeks before admission, she developed symptoms of common cold and general fatigue. Her laboratory data were unremarkable, and her CSF was normal. Serum levels of antibodies to gangliosides were within normal limits. Her MRIs of the brain and neck were normal. Both somatosensory evoked cortical potential study and auditory evoked brainstem response study were normal. She was diagnosed as postinfectious brainstem encephalitis, and

Low-dose, long-term caroverine administration attenuates impulse noise-induced hearing loss in the rat.

CONCLUSION: Physiological and morphological assessments indicated that low-dose and long-term caroverine delivery might be a new approach to protect against impulse noise-induced hearing loss. BACKGROUND: Although the exact mechanisms by which impulse noise causes hearing loss are still unclear, there is accumulating evidence that increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and excessive glutamate released from the inner hair cells lead to hair cell loss and consequently hearing loss. Caroverine is an antagonist of two glutamate receptors, alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazoleprop

An Exploratory Cross-Sectional Study of the Association Between Regular Cigarette Smoking and Level of Disability, Hand Dexterity, Cognitive Impairment, Fatigue, and Markers of Oxidative Stress in Male Patients With Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis.

Cigarette smoking is a recognized risk factor for multiple sclerosis (MS) development and progression; however, the association between smoking and features of MS in male patients remains insufficiently explored. A cross-sectional exploratory study was conducted involving 31 male patients with approved relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS), divided into smokers (n = 9) and non-smokers (n = 22). The Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) and Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT) were used to assess cognitive performance. Hand dexterity was evaluated using the 9-Hole Peg Test (9HPT). Sonographic basal ganglia alterations are related to non-motor symptoms in multiple sclerosis.

The anatomical basis of cognitive dysfunction and other non-motor symptoms in multiple sclerosis (MS) is poorly understood. In MS patients, transcranial sonography (TCS) shows neurodegenerative disease-like lesions of the substantia nigra (SN) and basal ganglia, thought to reflect iron accumulation. The present study deals with the question of whether sonographic changes of SN, brainstem raphe, lenticular nucleus (LN) or caudate nucleus are related to non-motor symptoms of MS. We used TCS to investigate 54 MS patients and 54 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects. Degree of cognitive (executive
