How auditory rhythm perception shapes speech production: The influence of neural synchronization and rhythmic patterns.

Auditory rhythm perception facilitates language processing, yet it remains unclear how neural synchronization to external rhythms contributes to speech production. The present study examined whether individual differences in neural synchronization modulate rhythmic priming effects during speech production and whether such effects depend on the rhythmic structure of the target utterance. Eighty-six native Mandarin speakers performed a speech production task involving two four-syllable rhythmic patterns as targets: the dominant [2+2] pattern (boundary after the second syllable) and the less comm

Audiologic Outcomes with Auditory Brainstem Implantation Including Successful Open Set Speech Perception with Bilateral Implantation.

Background/Objectives: For patients with profound deafness resulting from auditory nerve pathology, as in Neurofibromatosis type 2, auditory brainstem implantation (ABI) can restore meaningful acoustic input. The literature reporting real-world results for ABI users is limited, especially regarding patients with bilateral implants. Here, we provide an updated report on the audiologic outcomes among all ABI patients treated at a tertiary institution, including high-performing bilateral ABI users. Methods: In this updated and expanded retrospective case series, audiologic outcomes were reviewed

Evidence of both brainstem and auditory cortex involvement in categorical perception for Chinese lexical tones.

The categorical perception of lexical tones is important to understand tonal languages. Recent studies have provided electrophysiological evidence for the categorical perception of lexical tones at the cortical level; however, whether neural correlates exist at subcortical levels remain unknown. In this study, by using across-category and within-category lexical tone contrasts with the equivalent physical interval, we recorded deviance detection activities at both the brainstem (reflected by frequency following response) and cortical levels (reflected by mismatch negativity) simultaneously. We

Effects of residual speech and auditory deprivation on speech perception of adult cochlear implant recipients.

OBJECTIVE: Possible predictive factors of cochlear implant (CI) outcomes have been extensively reported in literature for different user groups such as prelingual pediatric or postlingual adult users. However, there remains unexplained outcome variability among adult CI users; therefore, research concerning these patients continues and many different variables have been reported. This study aimed at evaluating the relationship between preoperative speech reception capacity, residual hearing, duration of deafness, age of implantation, and postoperative monosyllabic word recognition scores (WRSs

Beyond Auditory Sensory Processing Deficits: Lexical Tone Perception Deficits in Chinese Children With Developmental Dyslexia.

Increasing evidence suggests that children with developmental dyslexia exhibit a deficit not only at the segmental level of phonological processing but also, by extension, at the suprasegmental level. However, it remains unclear whether such a suprasegmental phonological processing deficit is due to a difficulty in processing acoustic cues of speech rhythm, such as rise time and intensity. This study set out to investigate to what extent suprasegmental phonological processing (i.e., Cantonese lexical tone perception) and rise time sensitivity could distinguish Chinese children with dyslexia fr

Activation of human auditory cortex during speech perception: effects of monaural, binaural, and dichotic presentation.

We used a rapid event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) paradigm to compare cortical activation to speech tokens presented monaurally to each ear, binaurally, and dichotically. Two forms of dichotic conditions were examined: one presented consonant-vowel (CV) syllables simultaneously to each ear while the other paired a CV syllable with a non-speech stimulus (band-limited noise). Right-handed adults were asked to differentially respond to serially presented target and distractor CV syllables. Activations were localized with reference to anatomic segmentation algorithms that

Age-related changes in auditory perception. Hearing loss in the elderly: aging ear or aging brain?

Hearing loss in the elderly is a very common disease: it is estimated to affect up to a third of the population aged 65 years or more, and 50% of people over 75 years old. There is a growing amount of data concerning the association between hearing loss and cognitive decline. Various possible mechanisms at the basis of this association have been proposed, such as the "common cause hypothesis," the "cascade hypothesis," and the "cognitive load hypothesis."Critically reviewing the data is essential to highlight the features of the relationship between hearing loss and cognitive decline. Assessing subclinical hearing loss in musicians and nonmusicians using auditory brainstem responses and speech perception measures.

In this study, the physiological and perceptual correlates of auditory function in student musicians and nonmusicians with normal hearing thresholds were investigated. The measures involved were auditory brainstem responses as a function of stimulation rate, spatial release from masking, and word intensity rollover functions. The results indicated that as the stimulation rate was increased, the wave I amplitude reductions were more abrupt in musicians than in nonmusicians. However, no significant group differences were observed for speech tasks. There were also no significant correlations betw

Effects of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation paired with tones on electrophysiological markers of auditory perception.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) has been introduced as a non-invasive alternative to invasive vagus nerve stimulation (iVNS). While iVNS paired with tones has been highlighted as a potential effective therapy for the treatment of auditory disorders such as tinnitus, there is still scarce data available confirming the efficacy of non-invasive taVNS. Here, we assessed the effect of taVNS paired with acoustic stimuli on sensory-related electrophysiological responses. METHODS: A total of 22 healthy participants were investigated with a taVNS tone-pairing parad

Cross-modal auditory priors drive the perception of bistable visual stimuli with reliable differences between individuals.

It is a widely held assumption that the brain performs perceptual inference by combining sensory information with prior expectations, weighted by their uncertainty. A distinction can be made between higher- and lower-level priors, which can be manipulated with associative learning and sensory priming, respectively. Here, we simultaneously investigate priming and the differential effect of auditory vs. visual associative cues on visual perception, and we also examine the reliability of individual differences. Healthy individuals (N = 29) performed a perceptual inference task twice with a one-we

Differential activation of the visual word form area during auditory phoneme perception in youth with dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia is a learning disorder characterized by difficulties reading words accurately and/or fluently. Several behavioral studies have suggested the presence of anomalies at an early stage of phoneme processing, when the complex spectrotemporal patterns in the speech signal are analyzed and assigned to phonemic categories. In this study, fMRI was used to compare brain responses associated with categorical discrimination of speech syllables (P) and acoustically matched nonphonemic stimuli (N) in children and adolescents with dyslexia and in typically developing (TD) controls, age

The boundaries of auditory perception for within-word syllable segregation in untrained and trained adult listeners.

Syllable segregation is among the core diagnostic features of both childhood apraxia of speech and acquired apraxia of speech; however, little is known about the limen of perception of syllable segregation. The purpose of this research was therefore to explore adult listeners' auditory perception of within-word syllable segregation in trained and untrained adult listeners. Two experimental design studies, each with two phases, were conducted. Study one included 40 untrained listeners (aged 18-28 years), and study two included 5 trained listeners (10-25 years of experience). Recorded audio samp
