Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are enduring environmental toxicants and exposure is associated with neurodevelopmental deficits. The auditory system appears particularly sensitive, as previous work has shown that developmental PCB exposure causes both hearing loss and gross disruptions in the organization of the rat auditory cortex. However, the mechanisms underlying PCB-induced changes are not known, nor is it known whether the central effects of PCBs are a consequence of peripheral hearing loss. Here, we study changes in both peripheral and central auditory function in rats with developmen

Frequency-threshold tuning curves were recorded in thousands of auditory-nerve fibers (ANFs) in chinchilla. Synthetic tuning curves with 21 characteristic frequencies (187 Hz to 19.04 kHz, spaced every 1/3 octave) were constructed by averaging individual tuning curves within 2/3-octave frequency bands. Tuning curves undergo a gradual transition in symmetry at characteristic frequencies (CFs) of 1 kHz and an abrupt change in shape at CFs of 3-4 kHz. For CFs < or = 3 kHz, the lower limbs of tuning curves have similar slopes, about -18 dB/octave, but the upper limbs have slopes that become increa

Amplitude of the N1 component of the cortical response was used to objectively determine threshold of hearing at 1 kHz and 4 kHz in a series of consecutively referred medicolegal cases with alleged occupational noise induced hearing loss and a control group of patients with Ménière's disease who were not seeking compensation for their hearing loss. The cortical response thresholds were compared with the subjective pure tone audiometric (PTA) thresholds at the same frequencies. The cortical and PTA thresholds were 'within 10 dB' for 84 and 92 per cent of the cases of noise induced hearing loss

OBJECTIVE: In recent studies, cochlear synaptopathy has been suggested as a potential pathophysiology mechanism for tinnitus, which occurs in individuals with normal hearing thresholds. Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) is a noninvasive method frequently used in the literature to evaluate cochlear synaptopathy in tinnitus patients. However, possible factors such as high-frequency pure-tone hearing thresholds, age, gender, and head characteristics that may affect ABR were not considered sufficiently in previous studies. Therefore, the present study aims to evaluate tinnitus ears and non-tinnitu

Noise-induced cochlear synaptopathy (CS) is defined as a permanent loss of synapses in the auditory nerve pathway following noise exposure. Several studies using auditory brainstem response (ABR) have indicated the presence of CS and increased central gain in tinnitus patients with normal hearing thresholds (TNHT), but the results were inconsistent. This meta-analysis aimed to review the evidence of CS and its pathological changes in the central auditory system in TNHT. Published studies using ABR to study TNHT were reviewed. PubMed, EMBASE, and Scopus databases were selected to search for rel

DESIGN: A retrospective medical record review of evoked potential and audiometric data were used to determine the accuracy with which click-evoked and tone burst-evoked auditory brain stem response (ABR) thresholds predict pure-tone audiometric thresholds.
METHODS: The medical records were reviewed of a consecutive group of patients who were referred for ABR testing for audiometric purposes over the past 4 yrs. ABR thresholds were measured for clicks and for several tone bursts, including a single-cycle, Blackman-windowed, 250-Hz tone burst, which has a broad spectrum with little energy above

This retrospective study was undertaken to assess the correlation between click-evoked auditory brainstem responses and behavioral hearing tests. We recruited a total of 16646 infants born in Ditmanson Medical Foundation Chia-Yi Christian Hospital, Taiwan, from 2012 to 2018 for such assessment purpose. Their data including the click-evoked auditory brainstem response (ABR), referral, and diagnostic follow-up were collected. Spearman correlation method was employed to assess the relationship between ABR and pure-tone threshold. The correlation between the click-evoked ABR that met the National

Noise-exposed rat pups provide a model of early deprivation of sensory input to the central auditory system, allowing the study of developmental neuroplasticity. Our previous results have demonstrated that a brief exposure of rats to broadband noise (125 dB SPL 8 min, 14th postnatal day) at the onset of hearing resulted in an altered intensity perception and frequency discrimination in adulthood despite normal hearing thresholds. In this study, we assessed the gap-detection ability and possible presence of tinnitus- and hyperacusis-like behavior in adult rats after the same neonatal acoustic t

It has frequently been claimed that children with specific language impairment (SLI) have impaired auditory perception, but there is much controversy about the role of such deficits in causing their language problems, and it has been difficult to establish solid, replicable findings in this area. Discrepancies in this field may arise because (a) a focus on mean results obscures the heterogeneity in the population and (b) insufficient attention has been paid to maturational aspects of auditory processing. We conducted a study of 16 young people with specific language impairment (SLI) and 16 con

The goal of this research was to determine the contributions of auditory neural processing and cognitive abilities to predict performance on a speech-in-noise perception task in young, normal hearing adults. Two experiments were performed, each with separate cohorts of ∼30 young adults with normal hearing who performed a competing talker task which included a high-pass filtered condition that was designed to be more sensitive to auditory nerve functioning than are commonly used speech-in-noise perception tests. Predictors of performance on this competing talker task included ABR waves I and V

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the most appropriate audiometric criterion in deciding which patients with asymmetric hearing loss should be referred to MRI to exclude a lesion in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA). Careful selection of patients could improve resource utilization while preventing unnecessary investigations with accompanying burden and costs.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.
PATIENTS: Of all the patients who were referred to our clinic between 1997 and 2012, the records were reviewed of those who underwent pure-tone audiometry, aud

Chinchillas (n = 6) were treated with carboplatin and, following a 30-day recovery period, were exposed to a 115 dB peak SPL impact noise presented at a rate of l/s for 6 h/day for 10 days. A second group (n = 6) received only the noise treatment. Cubic distortion product otoacoustic emissions (2f1-f2) and auditory evoked potential (AEP) detection thresholds in response to tone bursts were measured before and 30 days after drug treatment and following the first and 10th day of the noise exposure. Thirty days after the final exposure day, permanent changes in AEP detection thresholds and emissi

The critical period following hearing onset in rodents and humans is a window of plasticity essential for auditory system development. Additionally, multiple studies have demonstrated that auditory deprivation can lead to cognitive impairments in both animals and humans. Therefore, early acoustic deprivation (EAD) can negatively influence the development and function of hearing and mental processes, potentially affecting the well-being of individuals with early-life deafness. However, there is limited experimental evidence on how EAD impacts auditory processing, memory, and hippocampal functio

OBJECTIVES: To study normative thresholds and latencies for click and tone-burst auditory brainstem response (TB-ABR) for air and bone conduction in normal infants and those discharged from neonatal intensive care units, who passed newborn hearing screening and follow-up distortion product otoacoustic emission. An evoked potential system (Vivosonic Integrity) that incorporates Bluetooth electrical isolation and Kalman-weighted adaptive processing to improve signal to noise ratios was employed for this study. Results were compared with other published data.

Gonadectomized and surgically intact adult C57BL/6J (B6) mice of both sexes were exposed for 12h nightly to a high-frequency augmented acoustic environment (AAE): repetitive bursts of a half-octave noise band centered at 20 kHz, 70 dB SPL. The effects of sex, gonadectomy, and AAE treatment on genetic progressive hearing loss (exhibited by B6 mice) were evaluated by obtaining auditory brainstem response thresholds at ages 3-, 6-, and 9-months; hair cell counts (cytocochleograms) were obtained at 9 months. Unilateral auditory deprivation induces a reduction in the acoustic reflex threshold (ART) and an increase in loudness. These findings have been interpreted as a compensatory change in neural gain, governed by changes in excitatory and inhibitory neural inputs. There is also evidence to suggest that changes in neural gain can be measured using the auditory brainstem response (ABR). The present study extended Munro et al. (2014) [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 135, 315-322] by investigating changes after 4 days of unilateral earplug use to: (i) ART, (ii) ABR and (iii) loudness. Because changes may occur d

The C57BL/6 mouse has long been considered, in scores of published studies, as a model of early adult-onset, progressive sensorineural hearing loss (presbycusis). The auditory brainstem response (ABR) has most often been used in these studies as a measure of functional loss. Whereas the ABR measures the response to a rapid acoustic onset, the cochlear nerve envelope response (CNER) measures the ability of cochlear nerve axons to respond to the low frequency modulations of the entire acoustic waveform, acoustic changes that are utilized in vocalizations and music. The present study compared the
