Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Scientific Publishing.

Artificial intelligence is now embedded across the scientific research and publishing ecosystem, influencing discovery, analysis, knowledge translation, authorship, peer review, and editorial workflows. In cardiovascular and biomedical sciences, these developments offer substantial opportunities to accelerate knowledge generation, integrate complex datasets, and improve efficiency and consistency. At the same time, they introduce new risks related to bias, transparency, data integrity, and authorship responsibility, potentially endangering trust in the scientific record. This commentary examin

Flooding and health in Australia: a scoping review and coauthorship analysis of published research.

BACKGROUND: Australia is frequently affected by floods, and their severity and frequency are predicted to increase due to the effects of climate change. Over the past decade, there has been an increase in the number of publications reporting on the health impacts of flooding in Australia, but no synthesis of this research evidence has previously been published. The aim of this scoping review is to identify and map publications on the health impacts of flooding in Australia and to describe the networks of researchers contributing to this research. METHODS: In the study, we applied the scoping

Understanding author choices in the current conservation publishing landscape.

Conservation literature addresses a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary questions and benefits. Conservation science benefits most when a diverse range of authors are represented, particularly those from countries where much conservation work is focused. In other disciplines, it is well known that barriers and biases exist in the academic publishing sphere, which can affect research dissemination and an author's career development. We used a discrete choice experiment to determine how 7 journal attributes affect authors' choices of where to publish in conservation. We targeted authors directly

Scholarly Skills Series: How to Succeed in Writing Case Reports.

Case reports serve an important entry point for scholarship in palliative care (PC), yet many clinicians lack a practical roadmap for moving from an interesting encounter to a publishable article. In this inaugural article for the Journal of Palliative Medicine "Scholarly Skills Series," we provide a concise, replicable framework for writing case reports with a PC lens. We focus on the PC adaptation of the CAse Report (CARE) guidelines while providing a structured three-phase framework. Organized into a "Before, During, After" structure, we outline key steps and common pitfalls, including sele

Editorial diversity correlates with journal impact factor and author diversity in cardiothoracic surgery.

INTRODUCTION: While there are no widely accepted diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) metrics for journals, geographic and sex diversity across a journal's editorial board may provide a surrogate measure of its commitment to DEI. We explored the association between journal quality and DEI metrics for cardiothoracic surgery (CTS) journals and investigated whether editorial diversity correlates with diversity across published articles. METHODS: We collected the following data for 30 CTS journals: country of publication (categorized by income level), journal quality metrics (citation-based met

Academic partnerships for family medicine and primary health care education: a global narrative review 7 years after Astana.

The 2018 Declaration of Astana reaffirmed Primary Health Care (PHC) as the foundation for universal health coverage and the health-related Sustainable Development Goals, yet the workforce, curricula, and research infrastructure required to deliver that vision remain unevenly developed across regions. This narrative review, prepared in line with the SANRA reporting standard, examines the global field of academic partnerships for family medicine (FM) and PHC education during the 7 years that followed Astana. We synthesize peer-reviewed and gray literature from 2010 to April 2026 across PubMed, S

Scientific collaboration in Zika: identification of the leading research groups and researchers via social network analysis.

The association between Zika and microcephaly drew international attention to Brazil. The emergency situation demanded speed and collective effort by researchers worldwide, and Science was quick to investigate the disease and publish the results. Scientific knowledge was created and disseminated through collaboration in this process. Publications are still the best way of disseminating scientific knowledge. They allow to record progress in a field of studies and observe how scientists collaborate to produce advances as new knowledge and technologies are generated. An effective way to map such

Gender gaps in publications and citations in gambling studies: Comparisons against addiction science.

OBJECTIVE: Women in academia publish fewer papers and receive fewer citations than men. These gender gaps likely reflect systemic biases operating over several levels, from journal editorial policies to academic career progression. This study sought to characterize gender gaps for publications and citations in the field of gambling studies. METHOD: An automated gender inference procedure classified authors' binarized gender from their first names. Gender gaps were computed for publications and citations of papers in gambling studies, using the wider field of addiction science as a benchmark.
