Preservation of arm veins for arterial reconstruction.

The results of surgery for lower extremity salvage have improved steadily over the past decade. One of the principles accounting for this advance is the preferential use of autogenous veins for peripheral bypass surgery. Nonautogenous and prosthetic grafts to the infrageniculate (below knee) level have patency rates significantly lower than autogenous bypasses. Currently, the technical limits of bypass surgery often depend upon the availability of adequate venous conduits. The saphenous vein has been the conduit of choice for distal arterial bypasses. However, some patients lack saphenous vein

[Family malediction in the background of panic disorder -- case report].

The author reports the combined treatment with pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy of a patient suffering from recurrent panic disorder. Respected the patient's subjective aspects, at the beginning there was only supportive therapy supplemented with autogenic training. At this time the treatment was aimed at anxiety reducing directly. Later, when the panic disorder returned, the therapy was completed with shorter periods of cognitive behavioral therapy. During these sessions the patient learned that the underlying, hidden causes of her mental disorders could be revealed, understood and coped wit

[Clinical and fundamental investigations on recurrent glossodynia].

A type of oral lesion, so-called glossodynia has been on the increase recently. Glossodynia is a kind of psychosomatic disease in which the patient experiences chronic pain on the surface of the tongue. It has never been diagnosed as coming from organic or functional pain. Although glossodynia can be cured by antianxiety drugs, antidepressants, or autogenic training and so on, usually. These are not a desirable solution. We initially tried to administer the antifungal drug, ITCZ, to 65 glossodynia patients. Sixty-four of them were cured of tongue pain after 1-3 weeks. The effective rate of rec

A randomized controlled trial of an internet-based treatment for chronic headache.

Chronic headache is a significant public health problem in Western nations. Although controlled trials demonstrate the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of face-to-face behavioral therapy, most headache sufferers have limited access to these treatments. Delivery of behavioral interventions using Internet technology has the potential to reach a larger number of headache sufferers and reduce the burden of disease. This randomized controlled study evaluated an Internet-delivered behavioral regimen composed of progressive relaxation, limited biofeedback with autogenic training, and stress management

Effects of self-hypnosis training and EMG biofeedback relaxation training on chronic pain in persons with spinal-cord injury.

Thirty-seven adults with spinal-cord injury and chronic pain were randomly assigned to receive 10 sessions of self-hypnosis (HYP) or EMG biofeedback relaxation (BIO) training for pain management. Participants in both treatment conditions reported substantial, but similar, decreases in pain intensity from before to after the treatment sessions. However, participants in the HYP condition, but not the BIO condition, reported statistically significant decreases in daily average pain pre- to posttreatment. These pre- to posttreatment decreases in pain reported by the HYP participants were maintaine

Nonunion of a Third Metatarsal Base Stress Fracture Injured During Cross-Country Skiing Treated by Osteosynthesis: A Case Report.

Stress fractures at the base of the metatarsal are classified as high-risk stress fractures. The second and third metatarsal are likely to occur in classical ballet and jumping sports. Among them, there are few reports of nonunion cases after fractures at the base of the third metatarsal. We present a rare case of nonunion of a stress fracture at the base of the third metatarsal injured during practicing cross-country skiing. A 15-year-old male high school top-level cross-country skier couldn't stand the pain on the dorsum of his left forefoot during training for six months. Simulation of Anastomosis in Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery.

Developing cardiac surgical skills and experience takes years of practice. Cardiac trainees need to develop technical proficiency in order to enhance quality of care and patient safety. Simulation-based models are common resources for teaching procedural skills in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. Suitable and accessible educational platforms can play a progressively important role in the training process for young surgeons in the area of cardiac surgery. Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery consists of a wide range of pathologic anatomies and surgical techniques. I

Mindfulness-based focused attention training versus progressive muscle relaxation in remitted depressed patients: Effects on salivary cortisol and associations with subjective improvements in daily life.

Major Depression is a stress-related disorder characterized by altered hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function. Mindfulness-based interventions have shown to improve subjective parameters of stress and to reduce relapse rates in depressed patients. However, research on their effects on diurnal patterns of cortisol and associations with subjective outcomes is lacking. The present Ambulatory Assessment study investigated possible changes in daily rhythm cortisol parameters (cortisol awakening response (CAR), daily slope, total cortisol) in currently remitted individuals with recurrent depre
