Needle Grasp and Entry Port Selection for Automatic Execution of Suturing Tasks in Robotic Minimally Invasive Surgery.

This paper presents algorithms for selection of needle grasp and for selection of entry ports of robotic instruments, for autonomous robotic execution of the minimally invasive surgical suturing task. A critical issue for automatic execution of surgical tasks, such as suturing, is the choice of needle grasp for the robotic system. Inappropriate needle grasp increases operating time requiring multiple regrasps to complete the desired task. In robotic minimally invasive surgery, the entry port that the surgical robot goes through into the patient's body has a significant role on the performance

A Confidence-Based Shared Control Strategy for Robotic Electrosurgery.

Robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) systems take advantage of dexterous tools, enhanced vision, and motion filtering to improve patient outcomes. Whereas most RAS systems are directly controlled by surgeons, the development and application of autonomous RAS are growing owing to their repeatability and precision. Although full autonomy is a long-term goal, human intervention in RAS is still essential. In this work, we develop and test a shared control strategy for robotic electrosurgery in which autonomous robot controllers and human operators collaborate. We designed and implemented identification

The Future of Artificial Intelligence in Surgery.

Until recently, innovations in surgery were largely represented by extensions or augmentations of the surgeon's perception. This includes advancements such as the operating microscope, tumor fluorescence, intraoperative ultrasound, and minimally invasive surgical instrumentation. However, introducing artificial intelligence (AI) into the surgical disciplines represents a transformational event. Not only does AI contribute substantively to enhancing a surgeon's perception with such methodologies as three-dimensional anatomic overlays with augmented reality, AI-improved visualization for tumor r

MonoRace: Robust monocular AI for champion-level drone racing.

Autonomous drone racing represents a major frontier in robotics research. It requires an artificial intelligence (AI) that can run onboard lightweight flying robots under tight resource and time constraints while pushing the physical system to its limits. The state of the art in this area consists of a system with a stereo camera and an inertial measurement unit (IMU) that beat human drone-racing champions in a controlled indoor environment. Here, we present MonoRace, an onboard drone-racing approach that generalizes to a competition environment without any external motion tracking system, usi

Toward Optimal Mixture of Experts System for 3D Object Detection: A Game of Accuracy, Efficiency and Adaptivity.

Autonomous vehicles, open-world robots, and other automated systems rely on accurate, efficient perception modules for real-time object detection. Although high-precision models improve reliability, their processing time and computational overhead can hinder real-time performance and raise safety concerns. This paper introduces an Edge-based Mixture-of-Experts Optimal Sensing (EMOS) System that addresses the challenge of co-achieving accuracy, latency and scene adaptivity, further demonstrated in the open-world autonomous driving scenarios. Algorithmically, EMOS fuses multimodal sensor streams

Global feasible path planning for pest monitoring robots in unstructured agricultural environments.

In the context of sustainable agriculture and precision agriculture, autonomous mobile robots play a pivotal role in intelligent plant pest and disease detection. However, navigation within complex agricultural environments-characterized by narrow crop rows and irregular obstacles-remains a persistent challenge. To address these limitations, this study presents a Goal-Oriented Adaptive Bidirectional RRT* (GABi-RRT*) algorithm designed to overcome the issues of low sampling efficiency and unstable path quality that are inherent in the conventional RRT* algorithm in narrow spaces. The proposed G

Speech-touch integration for affective human-robot interaction: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence is increasingly capable of expressing empathy through language, yet the integration of physical touch-an important cue for social connection-remains fragmented. Although robots utilise language or touch individually, few systems coordinate both modalities, potentially limiting their capacity for affective human-robot interaction (HRI). This scoping review maps social robots that combine spoken language and tactile interaction (e.g., hugging, stroking, warmth, vibration), examines how these modalities are coordinated in existing systems, and synthesises repor

Multimodal Benchmark for Safety Assessment in Industrial Inspection Scenarios.

With the rapid development of industrial intelligence and unmanned inspection, reliable perception and safety assessment for AI systems in complex and dynamic industrial sites has become a key bottleneck for deploying predictive maintenance and autonomous inspection. Most public datasets remain limited by simulated data sources, single-modality sensing, or the absence of fine-grained object-level annotations, which prevents robust scene understanding and multimodal safety reasoning for industrial foundation models. To address these limitations, InspecSafe-V1 is released as the first multimodal

Deep learning-based autonomous retinal vein cannulation in ex vivo porcine eyes.

Retinal vein cannulation (RVC) is an emerging method for treating retinal vein occlusion (RVO). The success of this procedure depends on surgeon expertise and, recently, robotic assistance. This paper proposes an autonomous RVC workflow leveraging deep learning and computer vision. Two Steady-Hand Eye Robots (SHERs) controlled a 100-micrometer metal needle and a medical spatula to execute precise tasks. Three convolutional neural networks were trained to predict needle movement direction and identify contact and puncture events. A surgical microscope with an intraoperative optical coherence to

The Evolution of CT-Based Robotic Systems in Total Knee Arthroplasty: From Precision Tools to Intelligent Surgical Partners.

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is one of the most successful orthopaedic procedures; however, achieving consistent implant alignment, soft-tissue balance, and optimal patient satisfaction remains challenging. These limitations have driven the evolution of surgical technologies from conventional instrumentation and computer navigation to Computed Tomography (CT)-based robotic systems. Over the past three decades, CT-based robotic systems have evolved from early autonomous platforms to contemporary technologies that include both semi-active haptic-guided systems and next-generation autonomous rob

Mitigating lateral sensing blind spots: A dual-segment bronchoscopic robot with a bioinspired skin.

Lateral force blind spots frequently trigger airway injuries during robotic bronchoscopy. Traditional sensing approaches lack fine spatial resolution, and single-segment robots suffer poor posture adjustment flexibility, worsening unmonitored tissue contact. We integrate a snake-scale-inspired 64-channel gradient piezoelectric film with a dual-segment manipulator to resolve lateral blind spots for secure bronchial navigation. The conformally wrapped sensor delivers fast (<10 ms), precise force detection (R2 > 0.98, RMSE < 0.145 N, CV < 2%) and filters bending pseudo-forces. The dual-segment de
