Relationships between speech-in-noise comprehension, lip reading ability and cortical speech tracking in talking avatars as well as natural talking heads.

In noisy listening environments, visual cues from a speaker's face can significantly boost speech comprehension. The underlying audiovisual integration in the brain involves tracking of audiovisual speech features in the temporal lobe. Moreover, lip reading in silence is associated with tracking of the speech envelope in the low-delta frequency band (0.5-1 Hz). Recently, digital avatars have emerged that can support speech comprehension. Yet, it remains unclear how the human brain integrates such artificial visual signals with natural speech. Here, we employed magnetoencephalography (MEG) to m

Effects of change in dysfunctional beliefs and self-esteem in avatar-based cognitive therapy for symptoms of social anxiety disorder: a randomized parallel trial.

Social anxiety is both highly prevalent and debilitating, with dysfunctional beliefs playing a crucial role in its persistence. This randomized controlled trial examined whether a remote avatar-based intervention for restructuring dysfunctional beliefs was associated with changes in social anxiety symptoms in a sample with subclinical social anxiety disorder (SAD). Data from N = 235 participants who completed all study stages were included in the analyses. While participants in the intervention group were tasked with contradicting their personal dysfunctional beliefs verbalized by the avatar,

Social Role-Based Training Using a Computer Graphics Avatar in a Real-World Commercial Setting for Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: The lack of social role-based behaviors, such as guiding and assisting others, is a barrier to employment success and community participation for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Enhancing self-efficacy is essential for improving these behaviors. To enhance self-efficacy in social role-based behaviors, we developed a training system that enables users to perform social role-based behaviors, including guiding and assisting others, called TCR (a training system that enables users to perform role-based behaviors using a computer graphics avatar in a real, bustling comm

Inhibitory Theta Burst Stimulation Highlights the Role of Left aIPS and Right TPJ during Complementary and Imitative Human-Avatar Interactions in Cooperative and Competitive Scenarios.

Competitive and cooperative interactions are based on anticipation or synchronization with the partner's actions. Both forms of interaction may either require performing imitative or complementary movements with respect to those performed by our partner. We explored how parietal regions involved in the control of imitative behavior (temporo-parietal junction, TPJ), goal coding and visuo-motor integration (anterior intraparietal sulcus, aIPS) contribute to the execution of imitative and complementary movements during cooperative and competitive interactions. To this aim, we delivered off-line n

Effect of an avatar-based discharge education application on knowledge and behaviour in people after acute coronary syndrome: protocol for a pragmatic prospective randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Many hospital presentations for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) occur in people previously hospitalised with coronary heart disease (CHD), leading to increased costs and health burden. Secondary prevention education including a prehospital discharge plan is recommended for all individuals to reduce the risk of recurrence. However, many clinicians lack the time or support to provide education, and patients' uptake of secondary prevention programmes is limited. An avatar-based education app is a novel and engaging way to provide self-delivered, evidence-based secondary prevention inf

Trametinib-mediated MEK inhibition impairs cancer cell viability and invasion in patient-derived tumor avatars of glioblastoma with extraneural metastases: A proof-of-concept study.

Glioblastoma (GBM) remains one of the most lethal human malignancies, yet extraneural metastases are exceptionally rare and poorly understood. Standard treatment-surgical resection followed by chemoradiotherapy-offers only modest survival benefits, and therapeutic options for metastatic GBM are limited. Here, we describe a rare clinical case of metastatic GBM and provide comprehensive molecular characterization alongside a potential targeted treatment strategy. The tumor exhibited several molecular features associated with aggressive behavior, including alterations in the tumor suppressor gene

"It Felt Good to Be Able to Say That Out Loud"-Therapeutic Alliance and Processes in AVATAR Therapy for People Who Hear Distressing Voices: Peer-Led Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: AVATAR therapy is a novel psychological therapy that aims to reduce distress associated with hearing voices. The approach involves a series of therapist-facilitated dialogues between a voice-hearer and a digital embodiment of their main distressing voice (the avatar), which aim to increase coping and self-empowerment. OBJECTIVE: This study explored therapeutic processes that are distinctive to AVATAR therapy, including direct early work with voice content and the role of the therapist in dialogue enactment. METHODS: People with lived experience relating to psychosis (peer researc

A Conversational, Virtual, Avatar-Led Cognitive Behavioral Therapy App Intervention for Improving the Quality of Life and Mental Health of People With Epilepsy: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder affecting about 1 in 100 people in the United Kingdom. Many individuals experience a lower quality of life as a result of their epilepsy diagnosis and are more likely to develop mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression. Medical interventions for this client group tend to focus on the treatment of seizures, whereas mental health disorders often remain undiagnosed and untreated. Early identification and treatment of mental health difficulties in people with epilepsy are vital to ensure better outcomes and improvements in qualit

Assessing body image in anorexia nervosa using biometric self-avatars in virtual reality: Attitudinal components rather than visual body size estimation are distorted.

BACKGROUND: Body image disturbance (BID) is a core symptom of anorexia nervosa (AN), but as yet distinctive features of BID are unknown. The present study aimed at disentangling perceptual and attitudinal components of BID in AN. METHODS: We investigated n = 24 women with AN and n = 24 controls. Based on a three-dimensional (3D) body scan, we created realistic virtual 3D bodies (avatars) for each participant that were varied through a range of ±20% of the participants' weights. Avatars were presented in a virtual reality mirror scenario. Using different psychophysical tasks, participants iden

Which side do you take? Instruction versus action in resolving frame of reference conflicts.

Previous studies of human-avatar interaction have shown that users are able to take the perspective of an avatar and act as if they were in the avatar's place. As a result, the positions of objects are encoded from the avatar's perspective and within the avatar's spatial reference frame, and avatar-based compatibility effects can be observed. In the present study, we confronted participants simultaneously with two different avatars that offered conflicting visual perspectives. We asked participants to take the perspective of one avatar while performing a Simon task. In one half of the experime

Exploring Virtual Doppelgangers as Movement Models to Enhance Voluntary Imitation.

Virtual Reality (VR) setups offer the possibility to investigate interactions between model and observer characteristics in imitation behavior, such as in the chameleon effect of automatic mimicry. We tested the hypothesis that perceived affiliative characteristics of a virtual model, such as similarity to the observer and likability, will facilitate observers' engagement in voluntary motor imitation. In a within-subjects design, participants were exposed to four virtual characters of different degrees of realism and observer similarity (avatar numbers AN=1-4), ranging from an abstract stickpe

Investigating the feasibility and acceptability of real-time visual feedback in reducing compensatory motions during self-administered stroke rehabilitation exercises: A pilot study with chronic stroke survivors.

INTRODUCTION: Homework-based rehabilitation programs can help stroke survivors restore upper extremity function. However, compensatory motions can develop without therapist supervision, leading to sub-optimal recovery. We developed a visual feedback system using a live video feed or an avatar reflecting users' movements so users are aware of compensations. This pilot study aimed to evaluate validity (how well the avatar characterizes different types of compensations) and acceptability of the system. METHODS: Ten participants with chronic stroke performed upper-extremity exercises under three

Impact of an overweight body representation in virtual reality on locomotion in a motor imagery task.

Virtual reality immersion enables a person to embody avatars that strongly deviate from his/her biological body. Interestingly, the person's expectations about the embodied avatar lead to congruous behavior, phenomenon referred to as the Proteus effect. The objective of the present study was to investigate, in virtual reality, the relationship between body-shape representation and expected physical abilities in a locomotor imagery task, in the context of overweight avatar embodiment. Given the negative stereotypes concerning overweight people's physical abilities, we expected overweight avatar

An Economic Evaluation of a Streamlined Day-Case Atrial Fibrillation Ablation Protocol and Conventional Cryoballoon Ablation versus Antiarrhythmic Drugs in a UK Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation Population.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Symptom control for atrial fibrillation can be achieved by catheter ablation or drug therapy. We assessed the cost effectiveness of a novel streamlined atrial fibrillation cryoballoon ablation protocol (AVATAR) compared with optimised antiarrhythmic drug (AAD) therapy and a conventional catheter ablation protocol, from a UK National Health Service (NHS) perspective. METHODS: Data from the AVATAR study were assessed to determine the cost effectiveness of the three protocols in a two-step process. In the first stage, statistical analysis of clinical efficacy outcomes was co

Training software using virtual-reality technology and pre-calculated effective dose data.

This paper describes the development of a software package, called VR Dose Simulator, which aims to provide interactive radiation safety and ALARA training to radiation workers using virtual-reality (VR) simulations. Combined with a pre-calculated effective dose equivalent (EDE) database, a virtual radiation environment was constructed in VR authoring software, EON Studio, using 3-D models of a real nuclear power plant building. Models of avatars representing two workers were adopted with arms and legs of the avatar being controlled in the software to simulate walking and other postures. Colli

Mentalizing and self-other distinction in visual perspective taking: the analysis of temporal neural processing using high-density EEG.

This high density EEG report dissects the neural processing in the visual perspective taking using four experimental comparisons (Arrow, Avatar and Self, Other). Early activation differences occurred between the Avatar and the Arrow condition in primary visual pathways concomitantly with alpha and beta phase locked responses predominant in the Avatar condition. In later time points, brain activation was stronger for the Avatar condition in paracentral lobule of frontal lobe. When taking the other's perspective, there was an increased recruitment of generators in the occipital and temporal lobe

Proteus Effect Profiles: how Do they Relate with Disordered Gaming Behaviours?

Gamers represent themselves in online gaming worlds through their avatars. The term "Proteus Effect" (PE) defines the potential influences of the gamers' avatars on their demeanour, perception and conduct and has been linked with excessive gaming. There is a significant lack of knowledge regarding likely distinct PE profiles and whether these could be differentially implicated with disordered gaming. A normative group of 1022 World of Warcraft (WoW) gamers were assessed in the present study (Mean age = 28.60 years). The Proteus Effect Scale (PES) was used to evaluate the possible avatar effect

Computer-assisted therapy for medication-resistant auditory hallucinations: proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND: One in four patients with schizophrenia responds poorly to antipsychotic medication, continuing to hear persecutory auditory hallucinations. Patients who are able to sustain a dialogue with their persecutor feel much more in control. AIMS: To develop a computerised system that enables the patient to create an avatar of their persecutor. To encourage them to engage in a dialogue with the avatar, which the therapist is able to control so that the avatar progressively yields control to the patient. METHOD: Avatar therapy was evaluated by a randomised, single blind, partial crossover
