Schwannoma of the long thoracic nerve in the left axilla: a case report.

Schwannoma, which is also known as neurilemmoma, is a type of tumor that arises from the peripheral nerve sheaths. Cases of schwannomas located in different regions have been reported. Some schwannomas present as asymptomatic masses, while others cause discomfort, such as pain and numbness. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a valuable diagnostic tool. A 23-year-old woman presented to our hospital with a mass in the left axilla that was misdiagnosed as mammae erraticae. The patient also considered the condition to be mammae erraticae for approximately 14 months because of a lack of symptoms.

Case report: synovial sarcoma of the axilla with brachial plexus involvement.

BACKGROUND: Synovial sarcoma is a rare soft tissue sarcoma which most commonly affects the extremities of young adults. Axilla involvement by this sarcoma is very rare especially with involvement of the brachial plexus. This combination adds to the challenge in approaching such tumors which might significantly affect survival and function. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we present a 48-year-old female patient who presented with an isolated painless lump in her right axilla. Initially, her workup, looking for possible breast cancer, included fine-needle aspiration (FNA) which did not provide the d

Granulomatous diseases of the breast and axilla: radiological findings with pathological correlation.

OBJECTIVES: This article reviews our experience and describes the literature findings of granulomatous diseases of the breast and axilla. METHODS: After approval of the Institutional Review Board was obtained, the surgical pathological records from January 2000 to January 2017 were searched for the keyword granulomatous. Clinical, imaging and histology findings were reviewed by both a fellowship-trained radiologist and a breast-imaging consultant radiologist, reviewing 127 patients (age range, 32-86 years; 126 women and 1 man). RESULTS: Most common causes of granulomatous lesions of the brea

Sonographic Findings of Accessory Breast Tissue in Axilla and Related Diseases.

Accessory breast tissue results from failed regression of primitive mammary tissue and is most often located in the axilla. Accessory breast tissue itself is normal and should not be misdiagnosed as an abnormality. Both benign and malignant diseases that occur in the normal breast can also develop in accessory breast tissue in the axilla. In this pictorial essay, we show sonographic findings of normal accessory breast tissue in the axilla and various lesions that occur in accessory axillary breast tissue, along with other imaging findings and pathologic features.

Physiological Striae Atrophicae of Adolescence with Involvement of the Axillae and Proximal Arms.

We report a 16-year-old adolescent male with multiple violaceous, atrophic, vertical linear striae isolated to the axillae and proximal arms of approximately one-year duration. In the past two years, he indulged in heavy weight-lifting. He experienced a growth spurt over the past few years. The patient was otherwise in good health and was not on any medications. Physiological striae atrophicae of adolescence where the striae were restricted to the axillae and proximal arms have very rarely been reported.

Sporadic Burkitt's lymphoma of the axilla: CT and MR imaging findings.

Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) is a high-grade B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, which can be divided into endemic, sporadic and human immunodeficiency-associated subtypes. The sporadic BL typically presents as an intra-abdominal tumour but that of cutaneous or subcutaneous origin is very uncommon. We present a case of sporadic BL arising from the axillary soft tissue and discuss the CT and MRI findings.

Imaging of the axilla before preoperative chemotherapy: implications for postmastectomy radiation.

Postmastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT) improves breast cancer survival in many women with lymph node-positive disease who undergo surgery followed by adjuvant chemotherapy. The role of PMRT after women receive neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is less clear. The available data suggest that clinical extent of disease at presentation before NAC, pathologic residual disease (especially pathologically involved lymph nodes) after NAC, and response to NAC are key prognostic factors for locoregional recurrence. Therefore, accurate axillary staging before the initiation of NAC and assessment of response

Management of the axilla in early breast cancer patients in the genomic era.

Management of the axilla in early breast cancer (EBC) patients has dramatically evolved in recent years from more radical to increasingly conservative approaches. Classically, the EBC patients with a clinically positive axilla are offered axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) and those with a clinically negative axilla (cN0) are offered sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy, which obviates the complications related to ALND and provides adequate surgical staging and comparable locoregional control and survival. The need for performing ALND when the SLN is positive and contemporary adjuvant treatment

New anatomical classification of the axilla with implications for sentinel node biopsy.

BACKGROUND: The exact anatomical location of the sentinel lymph node (SLN) in the axilla has not ascertained clinically, but could be useful both for teaching purposes and to reduce the morbidity of SLN biopsy. The aim of the study was to determine the position of the SLN in the axilla and to demonstrate that this location is not random. METHODS: A consecutive series of 242 patients with stage I breast cancer (T1/T2 N0) or ductal carcinoma in situ who underwent SLN localization by peritumoral injection were included in a prospective study to map the location of the SLN in the axilla. A new an

Clear cell hidradenoma of the axilla: a case report with literature review.

Clear cell hidradenoma is an uncommon benign skin appendageal tumor that typically involves the dermal layer of the head, face, and extremities. The breast is a rare site for this lesion, with only two documented cases, which were determined based on mammogram and sonogram findings. We present a case of clear cell hidradenoma of the axillary tail with radiological findings and a literature review.

A case of zonal syringocystadenoma papilliferum of the axilla mimicking verruca vulgaris.

Syringocystadenoma papilliferum (SCAP) most frequently arises from an organoid nevus on the head and neck. Zonal or segmental lesions occurring in other locations are rare. Here, we report a case of a 39-year-old woman with an SCAP clinically mimicking verruca vulgaris in a zonal distribution on her right axilla after her birth. Histopathologic examination showed it to be a typical SCAP. Furthermore, the tumor had a warty surface, which histologically revealed some signs of viral infection. Although polymerase chain reactions for low- and high-risk human papilloma virus types were negative, th

Is the axilla the right site for temperature measurement in children by chemical thermometer?

Although each method has its own advantages and disadvantages compared with the conservative mercury-in-glass thermometers, there are conflicting opinions about the optimal anatomic site for measuring body temperature as well about the variations in measurements with different methods. In this study, we aimed to assess the accuracy and reliability of measurements obtained from the axilla with the chemical thermometer (Tempa DOT TM) compared with the classic mercury-in-glass instruments. Sixty randomly selected pediatric patients who were admitted to our hospital were enrolled. Simultaneous tem

Breast cancer presenting as a mass in the axilla: a report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer presenting initially as enlarged axillary lymph node is very unusual. OBJECTIVE: To highlight the less frequent clinical presentation of breast cancer as persistent isolated, unilateral axillary lymphadenopathy. METHODS: A report of two patients who presented with persistent axillary lymphadenopathy. Case one was a 65-year old woman who presented with an eight-month history of a painless mass in the right axilla. Clinical breast examination was normal. A mammogram was performed. The sub-clinical mass was excised using wire-guided localization providing a specimen fo

[Repairing the defects in the chest, back and axilla with a split-breast flap].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a method to repair the defects after the secondary tumor excision and radiation ulcer in the chest, back and axilla. METHODS: Eight patients, with the defects after the secondary tumor excision and the radiation ulcer in the chest, back and axilla, were undergoing the treatment. A "T" shape incision or up-side-down "T" shape incision was designed above the breast or along the inframammary fold below breast, just close to the defect. A split-breast flap was raised above the pectoralis major or deep fascia. The defect was then repaired with a rotating and advancing way.

Treatment of the axilla in early breast cancer: past, present and future.

BACKGROUND: The optimal treatment of the axilla in early breast cancer is controversial. The present study reviews the pattern and predictors of regional recurrence (RR) and prognosis after RR in patients with early breast cancer treated by conservative surgery and radiotherapy (CS + RT). Implications of the results on current practice and future directions are explored. METHODS: Between 1979 and 1994, 1158 patients with stage I or II breast cancer were treated with CS + RT at Westmead Hospital. Two groups of patients were compared: 782 patients who underwent axillary dissection (axillary sur

Management of the axilla in early breast cancer: is it time to change tack?

The standard surgical treatment of the axilla in patients with early breast cancer is about to undergo a radical change. Although axillary dissection is an excellent procedure for both staging and local control, particularly in the clinically positive axilla, it has considerable morbidity and may understage a significant proportion of patients, because it will usually miss micrometastases that can occur in approximately 10% of 'node negative' patients. An increasing number of patients whose tumours are either non-invasive (ductal carcinoma in situ; DCIS), micro-invasive, tubular cancers or low

Breast cancer: two micrometastatic variants in the axilla that differ in prognosis.

Measurement of the area of the tumour deposits present in routine sections from the axillary nodes from a series of 1069 breast cancer patients showed that 138 cases had a single micrometastasis (0.2 cm2 or less), while in 29 a similar load was spread over two or more nodes. These 167 cases represent 15% of the patients in the series. Twentyfive of them had died of breast cancer within a mean follow-up of 6 years. They had smaller micrometastases than those surviving (P < 0.0025). Histological examination in the 138 with single micrometastases showed that two variants were present. In one, tum
