Antimicrobial activity of silver diamine fluoride on human periodontitis microbiota.

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) has been used in management of dentinal hypersensitivity and dental caries. This in vitro study evaluated the antimicrobial effects of SDF on subgingival microorganisms from severe human periodontitis lesions. Subgingival biofilm specimens from 24 adults with severe periodontitis were mixed in vitro with 19% or 38% SDF or left untreated (n = 24 per group) and then inoculated on enriched Brucella blood agar with anaerobic incubation. Selected red- and orange-complex periodontal pathogens were phenotypically identified in the subgingival specimens, including Porphyr

Microbiota characterization in Blastocystis-colonized and Blastocystis-free school-age children from Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Blastocystis is a protist that lives in the intestinal tract of a variety of hosts, including humans. It is still unclear how Blastocystis causes disease, which presents an ongoing challenge for researchers. Despite the controversial findings on the association between Blastocystis and clinical digestive manifestations, there is currently no consensus as to whether this protozoan actually behaves as a pathogen in humans. Furthermore, the relationship between Blastocystis and the intestinal microbiota composition is not yet clear. For that reason, the aim of this study was to identi

Pylephlebitis treated with apixaban.

Pylephlebitis is a rare condition that is characterized by an infected thrombus of the portal vein system and was traditionally associated with a high mortality rate prior to the introduction of antibiotics. This report details a 77-year-old Chinese male found to have a splenic vein thrombosis, Parvimonas micra bacteremia, and a polymicrobial splenic abscess. The patient was treated with abscess drainage and a 6 week course of intravenous antibiotics, and a direct oral anticoagulant, apixaban 2.5 mg twice daily. To our knowledge, this is the second documented case of pylephlebitis treated with

From Genes to Greens: How Diet, Climate and Phylogeny Shape Freshwater Turtle Microbiotas.

Reptile microbiotas remain poorly understood despite their importance for host ecology and evolution. This study investigated how diet, climate and evolutionary history shape the gut microbiota of 234 Australian freshwater turtles spanning 10 species, four climatic zones and contrasting trophic strategies. It was found that turtles' microbiotas were dominated by Pseudomonadota, Actinobacteriota and Bacteroidota. Microbial richness and evenness varied significantly among species, diets and climates. Carnivorous turtles exhibited greater bacterial diversity than omnivores, while individuals from

Alterations in the feline oral microbiome in common oral diseases - A comprehensive review.

The most prevalent diagnostic conditions in domestic cats (Felis catus) are oral diseases, affecting up to 90% of older cats. Periodontal disease (PD), feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS), and tooth resorption (TR) are the principal clinically relevant entities, each with distinct histopathological and microbiological features. Certain molecular techniques, including 16S rRNA sequencing, shotgun metagenomics, and metatranscriptomics, have substantially advanced our understanding of the feline oral microbiome alterations. This review summarizes the findings of the healthy oral microbiome an

Bacterial diversity of an acid mine drainage beside the Xichú River (Mexico) accessed by culture-dependent and culture-independent approaches.

Xichú River is a Mexican river located in an environmental preservation area called Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve. Around it, there are tons of abandoned mine residues that represent a serious environmental issue. Sediment samples of Xichú River, visibly contaminated by flows of an acid mine drainage, were collected to study their prokaryotic diversity. The study was based on both cultural and non-cultural approaches. The analysis of total 16S rRNA gene by MiSEQ sequencing allowed to identify 182 Operational Taxonomic Units. The community was dominated by Pseudomonadota, Bacteroidota, "Desulf

Metabolomics and structural modeling reveal the mechanism of broad-spectrum phthalate degradation by an enriched microbial consortium.

Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) pollution poses significant ecological risks, necessitating effective green remediation strategies. This study constructed a robust microbial consortium (DBP-Micro-con) and systematically elucidated its degradation mechanism using an integrated multi-omics approach. Community analysis provided that enrichment culture shifted the dominant phylum from Pseudomonadota, Acidobacteriota and Actinomycetota to Bacillota. The consortium achieved 99.07% DBP removal within 120 h, significantly outperforming isolated single strains. It exhibited remarkable environmental robustne

Impact of Bacillus licheniformis from yaks following antibiotic therapy in mouse model.

Gut microorganism (GM) is an integral component of the host microbiome and health system. Abuse of antibiotics disrupts the equilibrium of the microbiome, affecting environmental pathogens and host-associated bacteria alike. However, relatively little research on Bacillus licheniformis alleviates the adverse effects of antibiotics. To test the effect of B. licheniformis as a probiotic supplement against the effects of antibiotics, cefalexin was applied, and the recovery from cefalexin-induced jejunal community disorder and intestinal barrier damage was investigated by pathology, real-time PCR

Dissemination of sulfonamide resistance genes in digester microbiome during anaerobic digestion of food waste leachate.

The preeminence of sulfonamide drug resistance genes in food waste (FW) and the increased utilization of high-strength organic FW in anaerobic digestion (AD) to enhance methane production have raised severe public health concerns in wastewater treatment plants worldwide. In this regard, the dissemination patterns of different sulfonamide resistance genes (sul1 and sul2) and their impact on the digester core microbiota during AD of FW leachate (FWL) were evaluated. The presence of various sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) in FWL digesters improved the final methane yield by 37 % during AD compared

Antibiotics inhibit methanogenesis during municipal solid waste decomposition.

Municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills are significant sources of antibiotics. However, the effects of antibiotics on MSW decomposition process and methanogenesis during solid waste decomposition remain insufficiently characterized. This study investigated the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations (ERCs) of antibiotics (200 μg/kg for each antibiotic) on MSW decomposition and methanogenesis in bioreactors treated with and without eight antibiotics (three tetracyclines, three sulfonamides, and two macrolides). The key phases of MSW decomposition, namely the aerobic, anaerobic acid, a
