Exposure to Police and Client Violence Among Incarcerated Female Sex Workers in Baltimore City, Maryland.

Objectives. To determine the rate and correlates of incarceration among street-based female sex workers (FSWs).Methods. From April 2016 to January 2017, FSWs (n = 250) in Baltimore City, Maryland, were enrolled in a 12-month prospective cohort study. We analyzed baseline data and used zero-inflated negative binomial regression to model the incarceration rate.Results. Overall, 70% of FSWs had ever been incarcerated (mean = 15 times). In the multivariable analysis, incarceration rate was higher for FSWs exposed to police violence, non-Hispanic White FSWs, and women who used injection drugs daily

Fentanyl-contaminated drugs and non-fatal overdose among people who inject drugs in Baltimore, MD.

BACKGROUND: The opioid crisis remains a major public health issue in the US and beyond. Despite rapid rises in fentanyl-related mortality nationally, little is known about the role of fentanyl in the occurrence of non-fatal overdose among people who use drugs. We examined the prevalence of non-fatal overdose and perceived fentanyl exposure among syringe services program (SSP) clients and modeled the correlates of non-fatal overdose. METHODS: Data were drawn from a cross-sectional survey of 203 SSP clients in Baltimore, MD recruited in 2016. Logistic regression models were used to identify the

Public Health Detailing to Increase Routine HIV Screening in Baltimore, Maryland: Satisfaction, Feasibility, and Effectiveness.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the satisfaction with, and the feasibility and effectiveness of, a public health detailing project focused on increasing routine human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) screening of people aged 13-64 by primary care providers working in areas of Baltimore City, Maryland, with high rates of HIV transmission (defined as a mean geometric viral load of ≥1500 copies/mL per census tract). In public health detailing, trained public health professionals (ie, detailers) visit medical practice sites to meet with providers and site staff members, with the intention

Predictors of buprenorphine treatment success of opioid dependence in two Baltimore City grassroots recovery programs.

INTRODUCTION: Despite evidence for the efficacy of buprenorphine treatment in primary care, few studies have identified factors associated with treatment success, nor have such factors been evaluated in community settings. Identifying correlates of treatment success can facilitate the development of treatment models tailored for distinct populations, including low-income communities of color. The current study examined client-level socio-demographic factors associated with treatment success in community-based buprenorphine programs serving vulnerable populations. METHODS: Data were abstracted

Healthcare Provider Contact and Pre-exposure Prophylaxis in Baltimore Men Who Have Sex With Men.

INTRODUCTION: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) safely and effectively prevents HIV in populations at high risk, including men who have sex with men (MSM). PrEP scale-up depends upon primary care providers and community-based organizations (CBOs) sharing PrEP information. This study aimed to determine whether healthcare provider or CBO contact was associated with PrEP awareness among Baltimore MSM. METHODS: This study used 2014 Baltimore MSM National HIV Behavioral Surveillance data, which included data on health care, HIV and sexually transmitted infection testing, and receipt of condoms from

Case-control analysis of maternal prenatal analgesic use and cardiovascular malformations: Baltimore-Washington Infant Study.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess maternal prenatal use of analgesics and risk of cardiovascular malformations (CVM) in the offspring. STUDY DESIGN: Data from the Baltimore-Washington Infant Study, a population-based case-control investigation of CVM, were used to examine selected isolated CVM diagnoses and maternal analgesic use during the periconceptional period (3 months before and after conception). We compared case and control infants on frequency of maternal use of analgesics and estimated adjusted odds ratios (adjORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) with logistic regression models for s

Tetralogy of Fallot: epidemiology meets real-world management: lessons from the Baltimore-Washington Infant Study.

Decades ago, mass-scale epidemiologic studies were undertaken to accurately describe the prevalence of congenital heart disease and associated malformations, and to identify inheritance patterns, teratogenic influence and aetiologic underpinnings. Despite phenomenal breakthroughs in molecular diagnosis of congenital heart disease, original population-based studies for detailed knowledge of prevalence, associated malformations, and appropriate patient and family counselling remain invaluable to the armamentarium and knowledge base of paediatric cardiologists. No modern-era studies have supplant

Anxiety and risk of type 2 diabetes: evidence from the Baltimore Epidemiologic Catchment Area Study.

OBJECTIVE: Depression is increasingly recognized as a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, and is also commonly comorbid with anxiety. However, few studies have examined whether anxiety is predictive of diabetes risk. The objectives of this study are to examine the prospective relationship between anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social phobia, and agoraphobia) and risk of type 2 diabetes over an 11-year period, and to investigate the association between anxiety and risk of diabetes-related complications among those with prevalent type 2 diabetes. METHODS: Data com

Maternal prenatal depressive symptoms and spontaneous preterm births among African-American women in Baltimore, Maryland.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relation between maternal depressive symptoms and spontaneous preterm birth. From 1991 to 1993, pregnant, African-American women were prospectively enrolled at four hospital-based clinics in Baltimore, Maryland, that serve low-income areas of the city. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) Scale was used to assess depressive symptoms. Multiple logistic regression analysis estimated the independent contribution of maternal depressive symptoms to spontaneous preterm birth, controlling for behavioral, clinical, and demographic variabl

The symbolic meanings and experience of place among residents in public housing awaiting relocation in Baltimore, Maryland.

Public housing in the United States is often depicted as areas of decay and using racialized tropes about low-income communities of color. Despite these negative portrayals, residents of public housing often characterize their place as meaningful homes where they engage in place-making and community-building to challenge their social marginalization. The presence of strong connections to community and place among residents may help explain why public housing redevelopment programs focused on demolition and forced relocation have led to mixed results for improved mental and social well-being. Association of Shoulder Dysfunction with Mobility Limitation Among Older Adults in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging.

Association between lower extremity dysfunction and mobility limitation in older adults is well-established; whereas, the impact of upper extremity dysfunction on mobility remains unclear. Since lower extremity dysfunction does not explain all mechanisms that contribute to mobility limitation, more holistic hypotheses that explain reduced mobility in older populations are needed. The shoulders facilitate dynamic stability for ambulation, but the impact of shoulder dysfunction on mobility is poorly understood. This study examined the cross-sectional association of restricted shoulder elevation

A Revised Classification System and Recommendations From the Baltimore Consensus Meeting for Neoplastic Precursor Lesions in the Pancreas.

International experts met to discuss recent advances and to revise the 2004 recommendations for assessing and reporting precursor lesions to invasive carcinomas of the pancreas, including pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PanIN), intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN), mucinous cystic neoplasm, and other lesions. Consensus recommendations include the following: (1) To improve concordance and to align with practical consequences, a 2-tiered system (low vs. high grade) is proposed for all precursor lesions, with the provision that the current PanIN-2 and neoplasms with intermediate-g

Prevalence and correlates of street-obtained buprenorphine use among current and former injectors in Baltimore, Maryland.

OBJECTIVES: There are few systematic assessments of street-obtained buprenorphine use from community-based samples in the United States. The objective of this study was to characterize the prevalence, correlates, and reasons for street-obtained buprenorphine use among current and former injection drug users (IDUs) in Baltimore, Maryland. METHODS: In 2008, participants of the ALIVE (AIDS Linked to the IntraVenous Experience) study, a community-based cohort of IDUs, were administered a survey on buprenorphine. Street-obtained buprenorphine represented self-reported use of buprenorphine obtained

"A startling new chemotherapeutic agent": pediatric infectious disease and the introduction of sulfonamides at Baltimore's Sydenham Hospital.

Using pediatric patient records from Baltimore's Sydenham Hospital, this article explores the adoption of sulfa drugs in pediatrics. It discusses how clinicians dealt with questions of dosing and side effects and the impact of the sulfonamides on two diagnoses in children: meningococcal meningitis and pneumonia. The care of infants and children with infectious diseases made demands on physicians and nurses that differed from those facing clinicians treating adult patients. The article demonstrates the need to distinguish between pediatric and adult medical history. It suggests that the new the

Experiencing violence as a predictor of drug use relapse among former drug users in Baltimore, Maryland.

The purpose of this study was to examine experiencing violence as a predictor of subsequent drug relapse among a sample of former crack, cocaine, and heroin users in Baltimore, MD, USA. The sample consists of 228 former drug users in Baltimore who were recruited through street outreach. Mixed-effects models were used to examine experiencing violence as a predictor of drug relapse at follow-up after adjusting for clustering of responses among participants living in the same census block. Using longitudinal data, we found that experiencing violence in the past year predicted drug relapse at 2-ye
