The authors took X-ray diffraction pictures from two commercial brands of barbital (produced in the GDR and in the Hungarian People's Republic, respectively), the interpretation of which convinced them that these two commercial brands are different modifications. Effects of barbital dosing on the neural hexokinase (EC 2.7.1.1) and phosphofructokinase (EC 2.7.2.11) activities in the rat, were examined. The barbital dependence in the rat was acquired by giving the barbital-admixed food. These two enzyme activities were investigated in the following three dissected portions of the brain: cerebral cortex, brain stem and cerebellum. Intoxicating effects of ethanol, isopropanol, tert. butanol and barbital were studied by comparing performances on the tilted plane of ethanol preferring AA (Alko, Alcohol) and ethanol avoiding ANA (Alko, Non-Alcohol) rat strains raised by genetic selection for their voluntary ethanol intake. The motor coordination of AA rats was found to be less affected than that of ANA rats by all three alcohols and barbital. PURPOSE: This study aims to develop and validate a rapid, simple, and efficient bioanalytical method for the simultaneous quantification of phenobarbital and barbital in human whole blood using liquid-liquid extraction combined with direct analysis in real time (DART) and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS).
METHOD: Phenobarbital-d5 and aprobarbital were selected as internal standards (ISs) of phenobarbital and barbital, respectively. A mixed solvent of o-xylene and ethyl acetate at a ratio of 1:6 was used to extract analytes of interest and ISs from 100 μL of human whole blood samples.

Seventy-two hospitalized patients with alcohol withdrawal symptoms were treated with either carbamazepine (Tegretol) or barbital ( Diemal ) in a randomized, double-blind trial. Crystal optical studies showed that barbital brands that conform to the standards of the DAB 7--DDR and the Ph. Hung. VI, respectively, present two different crystalline forms. After recrystallization form water or acetone-water mixture (1:1), the optical crystal picture of the brand conforming to the DAB 7--DDR prevails. The melting points of the commercial products do not differ from each other; both substances melt at 187.5 degrees C, whereas the melting points of the recrystallized products are 1.5 degrees and 2 degrees C, respectively, lower.

By means of IR spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometry, two commercial brands of barbital and four barbital substances recrystallized from water or an acetone-water mixture were examined for polymorphism. The results obtained demonstrate that these substances differ in crystal lattice and that there are six polymorphic modifications.
