Dynamics of an age-structured heroin transmission model with vaccination and treatment.

Based on the development of heroin vaccine, in this paper, we propose an age structured heroin transmission model with treatment and vaccination. The model allows the drug reuse rate of the individuals in treatment to depend on a treatment-age and the vaccine waning rate of the vaccinated to depend on a vaccination age. Meanwhile, the model allows that the heroin vaccine provides an imperfect protection (i.e., the vaccinated individuals can also become drug addicted). We derive the basic reproduction number which dependents on vaccination. The basic reproduction number completely determines th

Prevention and control of Ebola virus transmission: mathematical modelling and data fitting.

The Ebola virus disease (EVD) has been endemic since 1976, and the case fatality rate is extremely high. EVD is spread by infected animals, symptomatic individuals, dead bodies, and contaminated environment. In this paper, we formulate an EVD model with four transmission modes and a time delay describing the incubation period. Through dynamical analysis, we verify the importance of blocking the infection source of infected animals. We get the basic reproduction number without considering the infection source of infected animals. And, it is proven that the model has a globally attractive diseas

Fractional order modeling of hepatitis C transmission dynamics with physics-informed neural network solutions.

This study develops a fractional-order mathematical model for Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) transmission using a six-compartment framework and the Caputo–Fabrizio derivative. The operator’s exponential kernel captures essential short-term memory effects in acute infection and treatment response, a key advancement over classical integer-order models. We establish the model’s well-posedness through rigorous positivity, boundedness, existence-uniqueness, and stability analyses. The basic reproduction number [Formula: see text] confirms epidemic potential, with sensitivity analysis identifying acute tra

Numerical solutions for norovirus epidemic spread: implications for public health control.

Norovirus is a highly contagious virus and the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 685 million cases of norovirus infection occur each year, with around 200 million affecting children under the age of five. The impact of this virus is substantial, contributing to roughly 200,000 deaths annually-about 50,000 of which are among young children-mostly in low-income countries. In addition to the human toll, norovirus imposes a significant economic burden, with global costs reaching approximately $60 billion each year due

A Theoretical Framework to Quantify the Tradeoff Between Individual and Population Benefits of Expanded Antibiotic Use.

The use of antibiotics during a disease outbreak presents a critical tradeoff between immediate treatment benefits to the individual and the long-term risk to the population. Typically, the extensive use of antibiotics has been thought to increase selective pressures, leading to resistance. This study explores scenarios where expanded antibiotic treatment can be advantageous for both individual and population health. We develop a mathematical framework to assess the impacts on outbreak dynamics of choosing to treat moderate infections not treated under current guidelines, focusing on cholera a

Transmission dynamics of a novel HIV/AIDS model through a higher-order Galerkin time discretization scheme.

There are numerous contagious diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, that have the propensity to culminate in fatal consequences. A communicable disease is an illness caused by a contagion agent or its toxins and spread directly or indirectly to a susceptible animal or human host by an infected person, animal, vector, or immaterial environment. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, hepatitis A, B, and C, and measles are all examples of communicable diseases. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a communicable disease cau

Transmission dynamics and control measures of COVID-19 outbreak in China: a modelling study.

COVID-19 is reported to have been brought under control in China. To understand the COVID-19 outbreak in China and provide potential lessons for other parts of the world, in this study we apply a mathematical model with multiple datasets to estimate the transmissibility of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the severity of the illness associated with the infection, and how both were affected by unprecedented control measures. Our analyses show that before 19th January 2020, 3.5% (95% CI 1.7-8.3%) of  infected people were detected; this percentage increased to 36.6% (95% CI 26.1-55.4%) thereafter. The ba

Delayed epidemic peak caused by infection and recovery rate fluctuations.

Forecasting epidemic scenarios has been critical to many decision-makers in imposing various public health interventions. Despite progresses in determining the magnitude and timing of epidemics, epidemic peak time predictions for H1N1 and COVID-19 were inaccurate, with the peaks delayed with respect to predictions. Here, we show that infection and recovery rate fluctuations play a critical role in peak timing. Using a susceptible-infected-recovered model with daily fluctuations on control parameters, we show that infection counts follow a lognormal distribution at the beginning of an epidemic

The transmissibility of hepatitis C virus: a modelling study in Xiamen City, China.

This study aimed at estimating the transmissibility of hepatitis C. The data for hepatitis C cases were collected in six districts in Xiamen City, China from 2004 to 2018. A population-mixed susceptible-infectious-chronic-recovered (SICR) model was used to fit the data and the parameters of the model were calculated. The basic reproduction number (R0) and the number of newly transmitted cases by a primary case per month (MNI) were adopted to quantitatively assess the transmissibility of hepatitis C virus (HCV). Eleven curve estimation models were employed to predict the trends of R0 and MNI in

The effect of group A streptococcal carrier on the epidemic model of acute rheumatic fever.

BACKGROUND: Group A streptococcus (GAS) is the most frequent cause of bacterial pharyngitis in school-aged children. The postinfection sequel as acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease that cause morbidity and mortality among young people is public health concerns in several developing countries. Asymptomatic carriage state of GAS is not fully understood in terms of host and bacterial factors. Although the ability of transmitting GAS of the asymptomatic carriers is relatively low, they may present the reservoir of the epidemic. A fraction of GAS carriers is difficult to estimat

Optimal control of HCV transmission under liquoring.

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) and alcohol are common causes of chronic liver diseases and both are recognized as major causes of liver disease worldwide. Each poses a major public and economic burden to society, and when the two co-exist they appear to have a synergistic effect in the progression of chronic liver disease. In this research, we developed a SIRS model of transmission of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) under effect of liquoring in six compartments: Susceptible, Low liquoring, High liquoring, Acute, Chronic and Recovered Individuals. The system of non-linear ordinary differential equ

Global stability for cholera epidemic models.

Cholera is a water and food borne infectious disease caused by the gram-negative bacterium, Vibrio cholerae. Its dynamics are highly complex owing to the coupling among multiple transmission pathways and different factors in pathogen ecology. Although various mathematical models and clinical studies published in recent years have made important contribution to cholera epidemiology, our knowledge of the disease mechanism remains incomplete at present, largely due to the limited understanding of the dynamics of cholera. In this paper, we conduct global stability analysis for several deterministi

Multiple Disease-Free Equilibria: Toward a Vector Structure of R 0.

Traditional epidemiological models rely on the basic reproductive number, R 0 , as a single threshold quantity to determine whether a disease will persist or die out. However, increased structural complexity in models can lead to the emergence of multiple disease-free equilibria (DFEs). To illustrate this dynamic diversity, we analyze a compartmental model based on the Health Belief Model, where risk perception, social imitation, and behavioral fatigue among susceptible individuals generate the coexistence of multiple DFEs. This case study exposes the limitations of a single scalar threshold

Modeling the impact of war, interventions, and funding on malaria transmission dynamics in Sudan.

Malaria poses a significant public health risk worldwide, and the infection results from the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito. Many malaria-endemic regions face instability, often driven by wars, heightening the risk of infectious disease transmission. Malaria funding and targeted prevention are essential for reducing and eventually eradicating transmission. This article focuses on developing a compartmental mathematical model to study malaria infection dynamics, incorporating the effects of malaria prevention, funding, and war on health systems. We evaluate the model's basic repr

Investigation the epidemiological transition of ebola virus under contagious population with sustainable extended fractional operator.

The Ebola outbreak represents one of the most severe global health crises in recent history. In this study, we develop and analyze a new fractional-order mathematical model for the transmission dynamics of the Ebola virus, incorporating an extended Atangana-Baleanu Caputo fractional operator. The model's foundational properties-such as existence, uniqueness, positivity, and well-posedness of solutions are established through fixed point theorems. A detailed investigation of the basic reproduction number is carried out, accompanied by a sensitivity analysis to highlight influential parameters a

Numerical and transcritical bifurcation analysis of Chikungunya dynamics within a fractional-fractal framework.

Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral infection that remains a serious public health problem because of its rapid transmission and long-term clinical implications. Classical models based on integer-order derivatives are effective in describing the basic mechanisms of transmission, but do not consider the memory effects and temporal heterogeneity seen in actual epidemic processes. This study introduces a modified fractional-fractal mathematical model that combines fractional derivatives, representing nonlocal memory, and fractal time, representing scale-related temporal irregularities, to overc

Modelling COVID-19 pandemic towards comparison of Omicron and Delta variants in Nigeria: development of predictive tools for forecasting and projection.

This study develops a deterministic model to analyze the transmission dynamics of COVID-19, with a specific focus on comparing the Omicron and Delta variants in Nigeria. A key innovation of the model lies in the incorporation of prophylactic interventions, offering valuable insights for informing public health strategies. The analysis shows that the disease-free equilibrium is both locally and globally asymptotically stable when the basic reproduction number is less than one, indicating conditions necessary for effective disease containment. Sensitivity analysis is conducted to identify the mo

On the rate of clinical AIDS on diagnosis: The mathematical interpretation and goal for the successful control of HIV/AIDS.

The most widely used measurement of transmission dynamics in real time is the effective reproduction number $ R\left(t\right) $. However, in the context of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), $ R\left(t\right) $ has not been used frequently, possibly because of the slowly progressing nature of HIV infection that limits the knowledge of recent infection events. Gaining deeper insights into the practically used epidemiological metrics of HIV/AIDS is therefore vital. Notably, in many high-income countries, including Japan, the rate of clinical AIDS on dia

Incorporating human mobility to enhance epidemic response and estimate real-time reproduction numbers.

Human mobility plays a critical role in the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases, influencing both their spread and the effectiveness of control measures. In the process of quantifying the real-time situation of an epidemic, the instantaneous reproduction number Rt appears to be one of the useful metrics widely used by public health researchers, officials, and policy makers. Since individuals can contract infections both within their region of origin and in other regions they visit, ignoring human mobility in the estimation process overlooks its impact on transmission dynamics and can

A novel fractal fractional mathematical model for HIV/AIDS transmission stability and sensitivity with numerical analysis.

Understanding the complex dynamics of HIV/AIDS transmission requires models that capture real-world progression and intervention impacts. This study introduces an innovative mathematical framework using fractal-fractional calculus to analyze HIV/AIDS dynamics, emphasizing memory effects and nonlocal interactions critical to disease spread. By dividing populations into four distinct compartments-susceptible individuals, infected individuals, those undergoing treatment, and individuals in advanced AIDS stages-the model reflects key phases of infection and therapeutic interventions.
