Community Experiences and Perceptions of the Broad One Health Endectocide-Based Malaria Intervention in Africa Trial of Ivermectin Mass Drug Administration: A Longitudinal Qualitative Study in Kwale County, Kenya.

Mass drug administration (MDA) of ivermectin is currently being evaluated for malaria control. Uptake and adherence to MDA are shaped by various individual, social, and operational factors; however, the authors of most studies have focused on individual drivers of uptake. In the present paper, a longitudinal qualitative study undertaken alongside the Broad One Health Endectocide-Based Malaria Intervention in Africa (BOHEMIA) ivermectin MDA clinical trial is reported to examine community experiences and perceptions of the trial and the ivermectin MDA. Using purposive maximum variation sampling,

Through the eyes of the participant: using photovoice to understand the experiences and effects of ivermectin MDA in the context of the BOHEMIA clinical trial in Kwale, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Assessing the acceptability of new malaria control interventions in clinical trials can be complex due to the need for strict ethical standards and specific trial procedures. While in-depth interviews and focus group discussions can provide useful insights, a more participatory method of data collection which complements these methods is photovoice. Photovoice offers a unique approach, empowering participants to share their experiences and perceptions on their own terms. Photovoice was employed alongside the BOHEMIA clinical trial (a trial investigating the safety and efficacy of i

Papular urticaria: a histopathologic study of 30 patients.

Papular urticaria is the result of hypersensitivity (id-reaction) to bites from certain insects such as mosquitoes gnats, fleas, mites, and bedbugs. Papular urticaria is common in childhood and is characterized by symmetrically distributed pruritic papules and papulovesicles. Scratching causes erosions and ulcerations. Pyoderma is common. Lesions occur in crops. The histopathologic features of papular urticaria are inadequately documented. In a prospective study we recorded the histopathologic features of 30 patients (female, 18; male, 12) with papular urticaria. Their ages ranged from 6-343 m

Predictors of bed bug-related stress in people who have experienced a recent infestation. Results from a cross-sectional survey in the city of Lyon, France.

BACKGROUND: The number of bed bug infestations has risen dramatically in the past decades. Infestations are responsible for mental health issues such as lower quality of life, insomnia and symptoms that may resemble those of post-traumatic stress disorders. Here, we sought to investigate whether bed bug-related stress may be predicted by a range of sociodemographic, clinical and infestation-related characteristics. We collected data using a paper and online survey of 305 adults who had experienced a bed bug infestation. RESULTS: From the 167 individuals dealing with a recent (<1 year) bed bug

Dermatologic infestations.

Head lice are transmitted by head to head contact. Optimal therapy includes malathion lotion 0.5% repeated in one week left on for 30 minutes to 8 hours. Spinosad topical suspension 0.9% repeated in one week left on for 10 minutes is another option. Scabies is transmitted mainly by direct contact but also via heavily infested fomites due to crusted scabies. Permethrin 5% cream to the body repeated in four days is often sufficient; however, scalp treatment with malathion lotion 0.5% is helpful in crusted scabies and in infested children. Oral ivermectin 200 mcg/kg is another option, repeated in

Acute illnesses associated with insecticides used to control bed bugs--seven states, 2003--2010.

The common bed bug, Cimex lectularius, is a wingless, reddish-brown insect that requires blood meals from humans, other mammals, or birds to survive. Bed bugs are not considered to be disease vectors, but they can reduce quality of life by causing anxiety, discomfort, and sleeplessness. Bed bug populations and infestations are increasing in the United States and internationally. Bed bug infestations often are treated with insecticides, but insecticide resistance is a problem, and excessive use of insecticides or use of insecticides contrary to label directions can raise the potential for human

Lack of association between ectoparasite intensities and rabies virus neutralizing antibody seroprevalence in wild big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus), Fort Collins, Colorado.

Recently, bat ectoparasites have been demonstrated to harbor pathogens of potential importance to humans. We evaluated antirabies antibody seroprevalence and the presence of ectoparasites in big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) sampled in 2002 and 2003 in Colorado to investigate if an association existed between ectoparasite intensity and exposure to rabies virus (RV). We used logistic regression and Akaike's Information Criteria adjusted for sample size (AICc) in a post-hoc analysis to investigate the relative importance of three ectoparasite species, as well as bat colony size, year sampled, ag

Participatory epidemiological approaches for risk assessment of bed bug (Insecta: Hemiptera: Cimicidae) infestation in public hospitals in the city of Faisalabad, Punjab, Pakistan.

This study was to determine risk assessment associated with bed bugs (Insecta: Hemiptera: Cimicidae) using participatory epidemiological tools in the selected public hospitals of district Faisalabad, Punjab, Pakistan. Bed bugs were collected and morphologically identified through a standard taxonomic key. A descriptive cross-sectional survey of patients using a pre-designed questionnaire containing open-ended and closed-ended questions was conducted for six months between January 2023 and June 2023. Of the 384 participants, 113 (29.43%) had experienced itching or skin irritation presumably fro

Endosymbiosis and its significance in dermatology.

Proposed at the beginning of the twentieth century to explain the origin of eukaryotic organelles from prokaryotes, endosymbiosis is now medically defined by various interaction patterns between microorganisms and their residing hosts, best exemplified by the bacterial endosymbiont Wolbachia identified in arthropods and filarial nematodes, which can influence normal development, reproduction, survival and transmission of the hosts. Based on the transmission modes, vertical or horizontal, and the function of the endosymbionts, the host-symbiont dependence can be divided into primary or secondar

Drinking a hot blood meal elicits a protective heat shock response in mosquitoes.

The mosquito's body temperature increases dramatically when it takes a blood meal from a warm-blooded, vertebrate host. By using the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, we demonstrate that this boost in temperature following a blood meal prompts the synthesis of heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70). This response, elicited by the temperature of the blood meal, is most robust in the mosquito's midgut. When RNA interference is used to suppress expression of hsp70, protein digestion of the blood meal is impaired, leading to production of fewer eggs. We propose that Hsp70 protects the mosquito midgut f

Detection of Bartonella spp. in Cimex lectularius by MALDI-TOF MS.

Bed bugs are small hematophagous insects. They are found in temperate and tropical climates around the world. Their vectorial capacity for several pathogens, including Bartonella spp., has been suspected. An experimental study of artificial infection of Cimex lectularius with Bartonella quintana and Bartonella henselae bacteria was developed to evaluate the ability of MALDI-TOF MS to simultaneously identify bed bugs and their infectious status. This experimental study confirmed the ability of MALDI-TOF MS to identify bed bugs. In addition, it was able to differentiate between control bed bugs,

Bed bug infestations: prevalence, correlates, and cross-sectional association with psychological symptoms in a large sample of tenants in Montreal, Canada.

BACKGROUND: The resurgence of bed bugs is a major challenge to public health and housing authorities and is a social justice issue. Bed bugs are environmentally communicable, cause ill health, and decrease quality of life. Bed bug infestations are socially patterned, disproportionately affecting people facing vulnerability; they are more prevalent in high-density multi-unit housing environments. While bed bugs can cause cutaneous and allergic reactions along with other health reactions, the biggest health impacts of bed bugs appear to be psychological. To contribute to the limited number of st

Surveillance study of vector species on board passenger ships, risk factors related to infestations.

BACKGROUND: Passenger ships provide conditions suitable for the survival and growth of pest populations. Arthropods and rodents can gain access directly from the ships' open spaces, can be carried in shiploads, or can be found on humans or animals as ectoparasites. Vectors on board ships may contaminate stored foods, transmit illness on board, or, introduce diseases in new areas. Pest species, ship areas facilitating infestations, and different risk factors related to infestations were identified in 21 ferries. METHODS: 486 traps for insects and rodents were placed in 21 ferries. Archives of

Community-level barriers and facilitators of indoor residual spraying for malaria control: a systematic review of qualitative evidence from sub-Saharan Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Indoor residual spraying is a key strategy in the control against malaria, which still remains a devastating public health challenge in Sub-Saharan Africa. It was recommended by the World Health Organization, yet its effectiveness is still being compromised by low community uptake. Unlike other malaria interventions, indoor residual spraying is intrusive and requires entry into private household spaces and substantial domestic preparation. Household refusal and locked structures still remain primary threats to the success of the campaign. Although qualitative studies have examine

Four Species of Under-reported Parasitic Arthropods in Mexico and their Potential Role as Vectors of Pathogens.

Numerous arthropod taxa are important in human and veterinary medicine. The salivary secretions and feces of arthropods can cause allergic reactions in host vertebrates or harbor pathogens. Also, bites can be a risk factor for secondary infections. Documenting the diversity of arthropods of medical and veterinary importance remains an important aspect of disease control and prevention. We provide new records of ectoparasitic arthropods from Mexico that are of potential medical or veterinary relevance. Scanning electron microscopy along with amplification and sequencing of a fragment of the mit

Common Child and Adolescent Cutaneous Infestations and Fungal Infections.

Cutaneous infections and infestations are common among children and adolescents. Ectoparasitic infestations affect individuals across the globe. Head lice, body lice, scabies, and infestations with bed bugs are seen in individuals who reside in both resource poor areas and in developed countries. Superficial cutaneous and mucosal candida infections occur throughout the life cycle. Dermatophyte infections of keratin-containing skin and skin structures result in tinea capitis (scalp), tinea corporis (body), tinea pedis (foot), and tinea unguium (nails). Less frequent endemic fungal infections su

Insect-specific irreversible inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase in pests including the bed bug, the eastern yellowjacket, German and American cockroaches, and the confused flour beetle.

Insecticides directed against acetylcholinesterase (AChE) are facing increased resistance among target species as well as increasing concerns for human toxicity. The result has been a resurgence of disease vectors, insects destructive to agriculture, and residential pests. We previously reported a free cysteine (Cys) residue at the entrance to the AChE active site in some insects but not higher vertebrates. We also reported Cys-targeting methanethiosulfonate molecules (AMTSn), which, under conditions that spared human AChE, caused total irreversible inhibition of aphid AChE, 95% inhibition of

The epidemiology of viral hepatitis: an overview.

Type A hepatitis maintains itself in human populations without either an extrahuman or human reservoir. Intestinal carriers do not appear to be epidemiologically important; viremic carriers have not been demonstrated. Person-to-person transmission by the fecal-oral route is the usual mechanism. Epidemic and endemic occurrence is usually recognizable by well-defined characteristics; a "hyperendemic" patern has been documented. In some countries, but not all, the long-term trend of type A disease has been downward in recent years. Type B hepatitis is worldwide in distribution, and capable of mai
