Effects of animal-assisted therapy on behavioral and/or psychological symptoms in dementia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Recently, interest in nonpharmaceutical interventions in dementia care has increased. Animal-assisted therapy has been shown to be one promising intervention but more knowledge is needed. The present article reports on a pilot study involving an 84-year-old woman with vascular dementia who was systematically trained with a therapy dog team for 8 weeks. METHODS: A quasi-experimental longitudinal interventional design with pre-post measures was used. Data were collected on 3 occasions. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. RESULTS: Some effects on the woman's ability

Brain and behavioral pathology in an animal model of Wernicke's encephalopathy and Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome.

Animal models provide the opportunity for in-depth and experimental investigation into the anatomical and physiological underpinnings of human neurological disorders. Rodent models of thiamine deficiency have yielded significant insight into the structural, neurochemical and cognitive deficits associated with thiamine deficiency as well as proven useful toward greater understanding of memory function in the intact brain. In this review, we discuss the anatomical, neurochemical and behavioral changes that occur during the acute and chronic phases of thiamine deficiency and describe how rodent m

REM sleep behavior disorder and other sleep disturbances in Disney animated films.

During a viewing of Disney's animated film Cinderella (1950), one author (AI) noticed a dog having nightmares with dream-enactment that strongly resembled RBD. This prompted a study in which all Disney classic full-length animated films and shorts were analyzed for other examples of RBD. Three additional dogs were found with presumed RBD in the classic films Lady and the Tramp (1955) and The Fox and the Hound (1981), and in the short Pluto's Judgment Day (1935). These dogs were elderly males who would pant, whine, snuffle, howl, laugh, paddle, kick, and propel themselves while dreaming that th

Behavioral alterations in rats prenatally exposed to valproic acid: animal model of autism.

Autism is a severe behavioral disorder characterized by pervasive impairments in social interactions, deficits in verbal and nonverbal communication, and stereotyped, repetitive patterns of behaviors and interests. Recently, a new rodent model of autism was created by exposure of rat fetuses to valproic acid (VPA) on the 12.5th day of gestation (VPA rats). The model has striking anatomical, pathological, and etiological similarities to human data; however, it has not been characterized behaviorally. In order to determine if VPA rats present behavioral aberrations observed in autism, their beha

Explanatory models and animal health-seeking behavior for East Coast fever in rural Kenya: an ethnographic study.

INTRODUCTION: Explanatory models of disease focus on individuals' and groups' understandings of diseases, revealing a disconnect between livestock keepers and animal health providers. Animal health providers rely on models grounded in their veterinary training and experience. At the same time, livestock keepers may construct models based on traditional knowledge and their lived experience with East Coast fever in their cattle herds. To better understand East Coast fever and develop more efficient management strategies, this ethnographic study used the explanatory models' framework to provide a

Link between temperament traits, brain neurochemistry and response to SSRI: insights from animal model of social behavior.

BACKGROUND: Dominant-submissive relationships depend upon functionality of the neural circuits involving monoaminergic neurotransmission. Behavioral profiles of selectively bred dominant (Dom) and submissive (Sub) mice have been proposed to mimic hyperthymic- or depressive-like temperaments observed in patients with affective disorders. These mice differentially respond to psychotropic agents and stressful stimuli, however, the mechanisms underlying these differences remain unclear. To address these mechanisms, we analyzed the brain monoamine content and responses to paroxetine (PXT) in Dom an

Acute oral cannabidiolic acid methyl ester reduces depression-like behavior in two genetic animal models of depression.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cannabidiolic acid methyl ester (HU-580) was recently shown to reduce stress-induced anxiety-like behavior in rats. The aim of this study was to examine the antidepressant effect of HU-580 in two different rat models of depression. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Using the forced swim test (FST), we evaluated the effect of HU-580 in 43 Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) and 23 Flinders Sensitive Line (FSL) adult male rats. KEY RESULTS: 1 mg/kg HU-580 reduced immobility and increased swimming in WKY rats, compared to vehicle-treated controls (p < 0.05). This dose exerted similar effects in FSL

Evaluating the effects of documentary clips on student learning outcomes and attitudes in an animal behavior course.

Animal behavior courses that focus on how and why animals behave as they do in nature can benefit from opportunities for direct observation. While some university animal behavior courses include lab components that allow students to observe behavior first-hand, the logistical considerations for animal behavior labs are considerable, and therefore in many cases animal behavior courses consist only of lecture. We hypothesized that showing documentary clips in lecture, an inexpensive and easily implemented tool, would enhance student learning. To test this hypothesis, we showed selected documenta

Aerosolization behavior of antimicrobial resistance in animal farms: a field study from feces to fine particulate matter.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in animal feces can be released into the atmosphere via aerosolization, posing a high health risk to farm workers. So far, little attention has been paid to the characterization of the aerosolization process. In this study, fecal and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) samples were collected from 20 animal farms involving swine, cattle, layers, and broilers, and the ARGs, ARB, and human pathogenic bacteria (HPB) were loaded in these two media. The results showed that approximately 70% of ARGs, 60% of ARBs, and 43% of HPBs w

NMR-based Metabolomics and Fatty Acid Profiles to Unravel Biomarkers in Preclinical Animal Models of Compulsive Behavior.

Compulsivity is a key manifestation of inhibitory control deficit and a cardinal symptom of psychopathological conditions such as obsessive-compulsive and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorders, in which metabolic alterations have raised attention as putative biomarkers for early identification. The present study assessed the metabolic profile in a preclinical model of a compulsive phenotype of rats. We used the schedule-induced polydipsia (SIP) method to classify male Wistar rats into high drinkers (HDs) or low drinkers (LDs) according to their compulsive drinking rate developed by exposur

Nociceptive behavior and central neuropeptidergic dysregulations in male and female mice of a Fabry disease animal model.

Fabry disease (FD) is an X-linked inherited disorder characterized by glycosphingolipid accumulation due to deficiency of α-galactosidase A (α-Gal A) enzyme. Chronic pain and mood disorders frequently coexist in FD clinical setting, however underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms are still unclear. Here we investigated the mechanical and thermal sensitivity in α-Gal A (-/0) hemizygous male and the α-Gal A (-/-) homozygous female mice. We also characterized the gene expression of dynorphinergic, nociceptinergic and CRFergic systems, known to be involved in pain control and mood disorders, in the

Nitric oxide role in anxiety-like behavior, memory and cognitive impairments in animal model of chronic migraine.

The occurrence of cognitive dysfunctions and anxiety and mood disorders has been shown to be higher in migraine patients. Nitric Oxide (NO) is a significant neurotransmitter in the pathophysiology of migraine, anxiety and neurodegenerative disorders. Therefore, the present study was conducted to evaluate the role of NO system in migraine-induced memory impairment and anxiety like behaviors. Nitroglycerin (NTG) was administered to the animals as an animal model of migraine and pretreatment with L-Arginine, L-NAME and saline were implemented to evaluate the role of NO system in possible cognitiv

Effect of Feeding Adaptation of Italian Simmental Cows before Summer Grazing on Animal Behavior and Milk Characteristics.

According to the alpine transhumance system, dairy cows are moved from indoor feeding with conserved forage to fresh herbage feeding on pasture. The aim of this study was to assess, as a feeding adaptation technique, the effect of a gradual inclusion of fresh herbage in the diet of Italian Simmental dairy cows before their transfer to alpine pasture on performance, behavior, and milk characteristics. Eighteen cows were assigned to three groups: animals transferred to alpine pasture with a 10-d feeding adaptation period consisting in gradual access to a pasture close to the valley farm (GT), an

Minipigs as a Large-Brained Animal Model for Huntington's Disease: From Behavior and Imaging to Gene Therapy.

Large animal models offer novel opportunities in exploring safety, biology, and efficacy of novel therapeutic approaches for Huntington's disease (HD). Challenges in the development of, for example, gene therapy, such as delivery, distribution, and persistence of virus vectors or oligo sense nucleotides, can be explored in large brains and organisms approaching human size. We here introduce the transgenic Libechov minipig as a large animal model of HD. Methods developed to assess motor, cognitive, and behavioral features expected to manifest in an HD model are described. We also outline establ

Ritualistic chewing behavior induced by mCPP in the rat is an animal model of obsessive compulsive disorder.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by recurrent, anxiety-producing thoughts accompanied by unwanted, overwhelming urges to perform ritualistic behaviors. Pharmacological treatments for this disorder (serotonin uptake inhibitors) are problematic because there is a 6-8 week delayed onset and half of the patients do not adequately respond. The present study evaluated whether Ritualistic Chewing Behaviors (RCBs) induced by the serotonin agonist mCPP in the rat is a behavioral model for OCD. The effects upon the RCBs induced by mCPP (1 mg/kg) were evaluated following treatments wi

A cross-fostering study in a genetic animal model of depression: maternal behavior and depression-like symptoms.

Connections between maternal behavior and childhood depression were examined by using a "genetic animal model"; Flinder Sensitive Line--(FSL) rats, and cross-fostering the offspring with the control strain, Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. The control procedure was "in-fostering", where the foster dam and her pups were from the same strain. Contribution of pups' characteristics/genotype to maternal behavior was examined. After weaning, we measured male offspring's body weight, immobility in the swim test, and basal corticosterone (CORT) and adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) levels at the prepubertal age of
