Rater Training for a Multi-Site, International Clinical Trial: What Mood Symptoms may be most Difficult to Rate?

AIMS: Given resource constraints in conducting clinical trials, it is critical that rater training focuses on scale items wherein standardization is most challenging. This analysis examined mood disorder symptom ratings submitted in an online rater training program conducted preparatory to the initiation of a multi-site, international mood disorder treatment trial. Ratings were entered online and analyzed for consistency and variability, and compared to established standards (Gold Consensus Ratings/ GCRs). METHODS: Raters participated in web-based rater training on the Hamilton Depression Rat

Micronutrients versus standard medication management in autism: a naturalistic case-control study.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is often accompanied by self-injurious behavior (SIB), aggression, and tantrums, symptoms that have reportedly improved with micronutrient (vitamins and minerals) treatment. The current study took advantage of naturally occurring differences in parental preferences for treatment approaches. The micronutrient group asked for treatment without pharmaceuticals (n = 44, aged 2-28 years at entry [M = 8.39 +/- 5.58]). Their records were matched with those of 44 similar children whose families requested conventional treatment (medication group). Both groups improved on

Study of compulsive buying in depressed patients.

BACKGROUND: Compulsive buying is defined by the presence of repetitive impulsive and excessive buying leading to personal and familial distress. Patients with this disorder also suffer from mood disorder in 50% to 100% of the cases studied, and antidepressants help to decrease the frequency and the severity of uncontrolled buying. To define the correlation between compulsive buying and depression, we assessed this behavior among 119 inpatients answering to DSM-III-R criteria for major depressive episode. Additionally, we evaluated for comorbidity in the patients suffering from compulsive buyin

The relationship between childhood psychological abuse and cyberbullying behavior among graduate students: the mediating role of negative coping style and trait anxiety.

BACKGROUND: As a major public health problem, cyberbullying has been received widespread attention in recent years. However, most researches on cyberbullying are mainly focused on adolescents and college students, the underlying mechanisms of cyberbullying among graduate students have been relatively less investigated. From the perspectives of the general aggression model and attachment theory, this study aims to explore the relationship between childhood psychological abuse and cyberbullying behavior among graduate students, as well as the mediating roles of negative coping style and trait an

Childhood inattention and hyperactivity symptoms self-reported by adults with Asperger syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Increasing public awareness of the adult manifestations of developmental neuropsychiatric disorders, like Asperger syndrome and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), has provoked an increasing number of persons to seek assessment for the first time in adulthood. As these disorders have their origin in childhood, instruments for retrospective evaluation of childhood behavior are needed. SAMPLING AND METHODS: In this preliminary study, 20 adults with Asperger syndrome filled in the Wender-Utah Rating Scale for ADHD to describe retrospectively their childhood behavior. RE

A cleanroom sleeping environment's impact on markers of oxidative stress, immune dysregulation, and behavior in children with autism spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: An emerging paradigm suggests children with autism display a unique pattern of environmental, genetic, and epigenetic triggers that make them susceptible to developing dysfunctional heavy metal and chemical detoxification systems. These abnormalities could be caused by alterations in the methylation, sulfation, and metalloprotein pathways. This study sought to evaluate the physiological and behavioral effects of children with autism sleeping in an International Organization for Standardization Class 5 cleanroom. METHODS: Ten children with autism, ages 3-12, slept in a cleanroom fo

[Evaluation of risk factors coexistence for suicidal behavior with features of bipolarity in patients with depressive disorders].

UNLABELLED: Suicide being a deliberate act of depriving one-self of life is a complex phenomenon, which occurs as a result of the interaction between biological, genetic, psychological, sociological and environmental factors. More and more studies have provided evidence that subthreshold states of BP II (bipolar disorder type II) may increase the risk of suicidal behavior. The aim of the present study was to evaluate relationship of suicidal behavior and bipolarity features according to MDQ (Mood Disorder Questionnaire) and HCL-32 (Hypomania Check List-32) questionnaires in recurrent depressiv

Choosing an attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder rating scale: is item randomization necessary?

OBJECTIVE: Although behavior rating scales are generally considered de riguer for best clinical practices in the diagnosis and medical management of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), they are often time consuming to score, especially if items are arranged in random order. This study compares two methods of ordering rating scale items; namely, diagnostic-cluster versus randomized-order formats. METHODS: Participants were the parents of 207 consecutive referrals (5-17 years) to a child psychiatry outpatient service who were diagnosed as having a variety of emotional

Activation of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor glycine site temporally ameliorates neuropsychiatric symptoms of Parkinson's disease with dementia.

AIM: We have previously found that sarcosine, a glycine transporter I inhibitor, can improve the psychiatric symptoms of schizophrenia. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether the agent can also ameliorate neuropsychiatric symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with dementia. METHODS: An 8-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted in patients who had PD with dementia (PD-D). Neuropsychiatric manifestations were measured before and at week 2 (V1), week 4 (V2) and week 8 (V3) after treatment. Linear regression with the generalized estimating equations was applied

Factor structure of the Motivation Assessment Scale for persons with mental retardation.

The rating scale used to assess the motivators of maladaptive behaviors in persons with mental retardation was the Motivation Assessment Scale. In the current study, we validated the factor structure of the scale on a sample of 118 subjects with predominately severe or profound mental retardation. They exhibited deviant behaviors such as self-injurious and tantrum behavior, aggression, and passivity. The results of the factor analysis with varimax rotation validated the assumptions of the developers of the scale that the motivators could be grouped into sensory, escape, attention, and tangible

Utility of an Observational Social Skill Assessment as a Measure of Social Cognition in Autism.

Models of impaired social competence in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) highlight deficits in social cognition and social behavior. The Contextual Assessment of Social Skills (CASS) is a laboratory-based assessment of conversation ability in which participants interact with trained confederates who act interested (CASS-I) and bored (CASS-B), sequentially. The increased ecological validity of the CASS allows for better generalization to real-world social situations. Participants' perceptions of confederate behavior, assessed by the CASS Conversation Rating Scale (CRS), might offer additional uti

Smoking-related gestures as a behavioral dimension of tobacco use: associations with psychological distress and smoking patterns in treatment-seeking smokers.

Smoking behavior is influenced not only by nicotine dependence but also by behavioral rituals and psychological factors. The motor routines associated with smoking, such as holding and manipulating the cigarette, may represent an important behavioral component of tobacco addiction. However, the relationship between smoking-related gestures, psychological distress, and smoking behavior has received limited empirical attention. This cross-sectional study analyzed data from 787 treatment-seeking smokers undergoing clinical evaluation for tobacco dependence. Smoking behavior was assessed through t

Autism Spectrum Disorder: Correlation between aberrant behaviors, EEG abnormalities and seizures.

The relationship between epilepsy, epileptiform discharges, cognitive, language and behavioral symptoms is not clearly understood. Since difficulties with socialization and maladaptive behaviors are found in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), we inquired whether epileptiform activity and seizures are associated with adverse behavioral manifestations in this population. We reviewed our EEG database between 1999-2006, and identified 123 children with ASD. EEG abnormalities were found in 39 children (31%). A control group of age and gender matched ASD children with normal EEG's was obt

Diagnostic conundrum of oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder.

Evidence for a diagnostic distinction of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) is reviewed, and alternative conceptualizations and definitions for the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders are considered. Studies suggest that CD and ODD are strongly and developmentally related but clearly different. Factor analyses indicate that distinct covarying groups of ODD and CD symptoms can be identified, but certain symptoms relate to both (particularly mild aggression and lying). Age of onset for ODD is earlier than for most CD symptoms. Nearl
