Physical and Mental Health Disparities at the Intersection of Sexual and Gender Minority Statuses: Evidence From Population-Level Data.

Sexual and gender minorities (SGM) experience detriments across many physical and mental health outcomes compared with heterosexual and cisgender people. But little is known about health outcomes for those who are both gender minorities and sexual minorities. Motivated by theories of double disadvantage and leveraging advancements in data collection and measurement, we examine physical and mental health disparities across sexual and gender minority statuses: cisgender heterosexuals, gender minority heterosexuals, cisgender sexual minorities, and people who are both gender and sexual minorities

Increased reporting of male-to-male sexual activity in a national survey.

BACKGROUND: Prevention program designers need information on sexual behaviors to plan and evaluate their activities. Questions on sexual behavior have been added to a number of nationally representative interview surveys. GOAL: The goal was to measure the percentage of adult men who have engaged in male-to-male sex in the past year and since age 18 years and to observe and interpret changes over time in these measurements. STUDY DESIGN: Data are from the General Social Survey, a nationally representative, household-based survey of adults conducted in 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1996,

A multiprocess latent class analysis of the co-occurrence of substance use and sexual risk behavior among adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the co-occurrence of patterns of adolescent substance use and sexual behavior and test for potential moderating effects of gender. METHOD: The 2005 Youth Risk Behavior Survey sample of 13,953 high school students was used in this study. Latent class analyses were conducted to examine the relation between patterns of substance use and sexual risk behavior in a nationally representative adolescent sample. The final model controlled for demographic covariates and an interaction between gender and substance-use classes. RESULTS: Four class solutions to each behavior provided

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine utilization among adults (18-29 years), BRFSS 2015.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination acceptance is hampered by fears and conflicting attitudes about the need for and safety of vaccine. There are also ethical dilemmas associated with vaccinating adolescents for a sexually transmitted disease despite future cancer risk. The purpose of this research was to determine HPV vaccination acceptance/hesitancy among young adults. Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System 2015 data were used. During 2015, 83.1% of adults ages 25-29 years did not receive any HPV vaccination; the UOR was 3.47; 95% CI = 2.11, 5.70) compared to adults 18-24 years. There

Divide and recombine approaches for fitting logistic regression to large-scale health surveillance data: application to diabetes risk prediction in BRFSS.

The global rise in diabetes mellitus poses a major public health concern, highlighting the urgent need for effective risk prediction models to support early identification and prevention strategies. Yet, applying conventional statistical techniques to large-scale health surveillance data remains challenging due to memory limitations and high computational demands. One promising alternative, the divide and recombine (D&R) approach partitions the data into smaller subsets, fits logistic models independently within each, and combines the estimates to approximate full-sample maximum likelihood res

Comorbidities associated with symptoms of subjective cognitive decline in individuals aged 45-64.

CONTEXT: Early-stage cognitive decline occurs when an individual experiences memory loss or other cognitive impairment but does not meet the criteria for Alzheimer's disease (AD) or other dementias. After diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), approximately 5-15 % of cases progress to dementia per year. AD and many other causes of dementia are presently incurable. Early recognition of cognitive decline can allow healthcare providers to reduce the risk of disease progression. Literature is scarce on factors that can increase the incidence of cognitive decline, especially in early ages; t

The role of formative research in the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System.

The National Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Behavioral Surveillance System (NHBS) is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) newest system for measuring HIV risk behaviors among three adult populations at highest risk for HIV infection in the U.S.: men who have sex with men, injecting drug users, and heterosexuals at risk of HIV infection. The system is implemented by state and local health departments in designated metropolitan statistical areas with the highest HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) prevalence in the U.S. Prior to implementing the behavioral surve

Tobacco Use Behaviors and Related Disparities in 13 High-Tobacco-Burden U.S. States: An Overview of Evidence.

Progress in reducing cigarette smoking prevalence in the U.S. substantially varies by states, with the prevalence up to 50% higher than the national average in many states (Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia; high-tobacco-burden states). However, potential correlates and causes of tobacco use and health disparities have not been well documented in this region. The authors aimed to (1) establish recent estimates of lung cancer incidence, mortality, and smoking-attributable cancer rates an

Parental divorce's long shadow: Elevated stroke risk among older Americans.

Although studies have investigated the association between adverse childhood experiences and chronic health outcomes including stroke, few studies have investigated the association between parental divorce and stroke among adults with no history of childhood abuse. The objectives of this study were to investigate the association between parental divorce in childhood and stroke in older adulthood among those who did not experience child abuse and to examine whether this association differs between men and women. This study utilized population-based data from the 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surv

Adults Eligible for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Counseling and Participation in Aerobic Physical Activity - United States, 2013.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States, and physical inactivity is a major risk factor (1). Health care professionals have a role in counseling patients about physical activity for CVD prevention. In August 2014, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommended that adults who are overweight or obese and have additional CVD risk factors be offered or referred to intensive behavioral counseling interventions to promote a healthful diet and physical activity for CVD prevention. Although the USPSTF recommendation does not specify an amount of p

A Rapid Evaluation of the US Federal Tobacco 21 (T21) Law and Lessons From Statewide T21 Policies: Findings From Population-Level Surveys.

BACKGROUND: On December 20, 2019, the minimum age for purchasing tobacco in the US was raised nationally to 21 years. We evaluated this law (Tobacco 21 [T21]) 1 year after implementation. We also compared states with versus without T21 policies during 2019 to explore potential equity impacts of T21 policies. METHODS: We examined shifts in tobacco access among 6th through 12th graders using the National Youth Tobacco Survey. To explore equity of state T21 policies among youths and young adults, the associations with tobacco use were explored separately for race and ethnicity by using data from

Modeling Heterogeneity in Health Risk Behaviors With a Dynamic Mixture Model Informed by Textual Occupational Data.

Health risk behaviors, including smoking, poor nutrition, alcohol misuse, and physical inactivity (SNAP), are leading contributors to chronic disease burden and healthcare costs worldwide. Their prevalence is shaped not only by individual demographic characteristics but also by contextual factors such as socioeconomic and occupational environments. We develop a Bayesian topic-informed dynamic mixture model to analyze SNAP behaviors using data from the Italian health and behavioral surveillance system PASSI. Free-text occupational descriptions are integrated through structural topic modeling to

The Effect of E-Cigarette Taxes on Substance Use.

Public health advocates warn that the rapid growth of legal markets for electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) may generate a "gateway" to marijuana and harder drug consumption, particularly among teenagers. This study explores the effects of ENDS taxes on substance use. Analyses are based on difference-in-differences and event-study methods applied to both survey (Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System and Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System) and administrative (Treatment Episode Data Set) data. Our results imply that a one-dollar increase in ENDS taxes (2023$) is associated with

Patients' reports of counseling on mammography screening by health-care providers--North Carolina, 1997.

Regular mammography screening combined with timely and appropriate treatment can reduce mortality from breast cancer by 30% in women aged 50-69 years and 16% in women aged 40-49 years. A physician's recommendation has been strongly associated with a patient having a mammogram. This report analyzes data collected during 1997 in North Carolina as part of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), which indicated that 23% of women aged > or =40 years who had had a routine physical examination during the 2 years preceding the survey did not recall having a discussion about mammography
