Phylogenetic analysis of 20 strains of Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) virus subtype IE isolated from 1961 to 1996 in Mexico and throughout Central America showed that VEE virus subtype IE was monophyletic with respect to other VEE virus subtypes. Nonetheless, there were at least three distinct geographically separated VEE virus IE genotypes: northwestern Panama, Pacific coast (Mexico/Guatemala), and Gulf/Caribbean coast (Mexico/Belize). Strains from the Caribbean coast of Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua may cluster with the Gulf/Caribbean genotype, but additional isolates from the reg

Although cutaneous myiasis remains uncommon in North America, any traveler to the tropics may return with this ailment. A history of travel to a tropical country, a persistent pruritic lesion resembling a boil but having a dark central punctum with seropurulent or serosanguineous drainage, and complaints of a crawling sensation in the area of the lesion should lead the physician to consider myiasis. Treatment is directed at prompt removal of the fly maggot by incision and extraction.

INTRODUCTION: In the Netherlands, cutaneous leishmaniasis is most commonly seen in military personnel deployed on a mission or training abroad. The treatment of two Dutch soldiers who acquired cutaneous leishmaniasis with oral miltefosine was evaluated. Adverse effects were monitored and the improvement of skin lesions was assessed.
CASE REPORTS: A military nurse with a painless Chiclero's ulcer due to Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis acquired in Belize and a military physical training instructor with itchy swelling and small ulcer of the back of his left elbow due to L. donovani/infantum co

OBJECTIVE: To present an interesting cause of pre-auricular swelling.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 39-year-old woman who presented to the ENT department as an emergency with swelling in the left pre-auricular region. The patient had recently travelled to Central America, where the botfly is endemic. On examination, there was a raised, indurated area with a central orifice. A botfly larva was suspected. The larva was suffocated with paraffin paste, allowing removal without remnants being retained.
CONCLUSION: Suffocation of botfly larvae is favoured to surgical removal, due to the pos

Here, we review the human botfly (Dermatobia hominis), which belongs to a group of Diptera generically known as "myiasis-causing flies," characterized by the ability of their larvae to develop in animal flesh. In addition to its medical and economic importance, there is an academic interest in this botfly because of its peculiar biology, particularly because a phoretic diptera is needed to complete the life cycle. The larvae penetrate the host's skin, causing furuncle-like lesions that are pruritic, painful, and resemble subcutaneous nodules, producing irreversible perforations in the skin. Al

The genus Rhyncholepta Bergroth, 1911 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Pentatominae: Chlorocorini) is redescribed and five species-group taxa are recognized, keyed, their diagnostic characters illustrated, and the distribution reviewed. Among the five taxa, two species and one subspecies are recognized as new: Rhyncholeptagrandicallosagrandicallosa Bergroth, 1911 (Brazil, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname), Rhyncholeptagrandicallosacentroamericana subsp. n. (Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama), Rhyncholeptahenryi sp. n. (French Guiana), Rhyncholeptameinanderi Beck

Culex (Melanoconion) panocossa is a suspected vector of Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus in Central America. Prior to this report, Cx. panocossa was known from Central America (Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, southern Mexico, Panama), northern South America (Colombia, Venezuela) and the Greater Antilles (Cuba and Jamaica). Larvae (n=5) and adults (n=4286) of Cx. panocossa were collected at two locations near Homestead, FL, which indicates substantial established populations of this probable vector species in the continental US. Since larvae of Cx. panocossa are associated with

Species of the eutetrarhynchid genus Hispidorhynchus Schaeffner and Beveridge, 2012 possess an uncinate macrohook on the bothrial surface of the basal swelling of each tentacle. This unique feature of the oncotaxy is only shared with the closely related genus Oncomegas Dollfus, 1929 . A new species of Hispidorhynchus is described from specimens infecting Styracura schmardae (Werner, 1904) (Potamotrygonidae) from the western Caribbean Sea off the coast of Belize and Panama. Hispidorhynchus styracurae n. sp. differs from its 3 congeners in the possession of smaller and narrower bulbs, fewer prin

AUDIENCE AND TYPE OF CURRICULUM: This is a review curriculum utilizing multiple methods of education to enhance the skills of generalist healthcare providers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in the identification and stabilization of pediatric respiratory emergencies. Our audience of implementation was Belizean generalist providers (nurses and physicians).
LENGTH OF CURRICULUM: 8-10 hours.
INTRODUCTION: Early recognition and stabilization of critical pediatric patients can improve outcomes. Compared with resource-rich systems, many low-resource settings (i.e., LMICs) rely on gener

The family Onchocercidae, or filarioid nematodes, comprises common vector-borne parasitic worms that can infect, among other vertebrates, wild North American ruminant ungulates. Infection is a product of the available hosts and vectors distributed in viable ecosystems that permeate throughout the North America (i.e., Canada, United States, and Mexico) and Central America (i.e., Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama). The formation of these host-parasite assemblages can produce serious to no apparent clinical signs for the infected host animal depending on

Bats are considered reservoirs of several emerging zoonotic pathogens. Previous studies on blood parasites such as Anaplasmataceae, hemoplasmas, piroplasmids, and Hepatozoon spp. in South American bats have revealed high genetic diversity. This study investigated the molecular occurrence of these agents in 278 bats of 32 species captured in the state of Acre in the Western Brazilian Amazon. Spleen DNA samples were screened by PCR for different pathogens and tested negative for Anaplasma spp., Ehrlichia spp., Neorickettsia spp., piroplasmids, and Hepatozoon spp. However, 84 of the 208 samples (

In this report, we describe a rare case of a parasitic infection of Dermatobia hominis in a patient who presented to a general otolaryngology clinic in a Seattle suburb. The 69-year-old male patient initially presented with a unique furuncle on his scalp after returning from a vacation in Belize. Initially unrecognized as a cutaneous manifestation of D. hominis larva, the patient was brought for surgical excision and biopsy of the lesion to a community-based surgical center. This case highlights how artificial intelligence (AI) was innovatively utilized intraoperatively to assist the surgeon i

In Latin America, induced abortion is the fourth most commonly used method of fertility regulation. Estimates of the number of induced abortions performed each year in Latin America range from 2.7 to 7.4 million, or from 10 to 27 percent of all abortions performed in the developing world. Because of restrictive laws, nearly all of these abortions, except for those performed in Barbados, Belize, and Cuba, are clandestine and unsafe, and their sequelae are the principal cause of death among women of reproductive age. One of every three to five unsafe abortions leads to hospitalization, resulting

Cutaneous myiasis is a condition that involves an infestation of fly larvae into human tissue, most commonly caused by Dermatobia (D.) hominis or the bot fly. While this is a condition most commonly seen in tropical regions of the globe due to increased travel to endemic regions, physicians must increasingly be aware of this as a potential diagnosis. In addition, there is minimal literature on cutaneous myiasis in the pediatric patient and its potential associated symptoms. This case report thus highlights a toddler that presented to our facility with a raised, erythematous scalp lesion and as

BACKGROUND: In malaria elimination settings, available metrics for malaria surveillance have been insufficient to measure the performance of passive case detection adequately. An indicator for malaria suspected cases with malaria test (MSCT) is proposed to measure the rate of testing on persons presenting to health facilities who satisfy the definition of a suspected malaria case. This metric does not rely on prior knowledge of fever prevalence, seasonality, or external denominators, and can be used to compare detection rates in suspected cases within and between countries, including across se
