OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of traumatic cataracts, to describe their epidemiological and clinical aspects, and to analyze the postoperative functional results.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: We conducted a retrospective survey that covered the period from January 2000 to December 2003, during which 54 patients of all ages were treated for traumatic cataract. We report a case of granulomatous peritonitis in a child, due to Ascaris lumbricoïdes eggs. A 6 year-old child was admitted to the emergency ward with acute abdomen pain. Upon performing a laparotomy, severe adhesive inflammation and adenopathies were found and abdominal tuberculosis was diagnosed. Specific treatment was administered. Later, the acurage diagnosis of Ascaris ova peritonitis was made by histopathological examination of tissue removed during the operation. The pathogenesis is briefly discussed.

Forty-three proprietors of the low-income preschools in Benin City and 353 mothers of children attending such groups were asked to give information pertaining to the common health problems and immunization status of the children. There is a paucity of literature about the pattern of neurological diseases in children attending out-patient departments in Africa. In this study more boys than girls presented at our clinic. Almost all the principal diseases seen are eminently preventable. There appears to be no effective immunization programme. There is need for epidemiological studies to ascertain the true incidence of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis in view of the high incidence of measles in the community.
