Using a Person-Centered Approach to Identify Patterns of Exposure to Intimate Partner Violence and Child Abuse in Women: Associations With Mental Health.

Patterns of exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) and child abuse (CA) were explored in 467 women seeking psychological assistance following IPV. Using latent class analysis, three classes were obtained: women who had experienced physical, sexual, and psychological IPV, along with childhood physical and sexual abuse (IPV + CA; 38.5%); women who had experienced physical, sexual, and psychological IPV only (IPV/no CA; 52.9%); and women who had experienced psychological IPV only (Psych IPV only; 8.6%). Associations of class membership with severity of specific mental health conditions were

Assessment of symptoms in adult survivors of incest: a factor analytic study of the Responses to Childhood Incest Questionnaire.

Although research has established the long-term damaging effects of incest, these efforts have suffered from the lack of valid, standardized assessment instruments. The present study reports on the construction and factor validation of the Response to Childhood Incest Questionnaire (RCIQ), a self-report instrument that assesses a range of commonly reported symptoms experienced by adult survivors of incest. A clinical population of 104 adult women who had experienced childhood or adolescent incest completed the RCIQ. A factor analysis of the RCIQ items revealed seven factors which corresponded

Romantic Relationship Churn in Early Adolescence Predicts Hostility, Abuse, and Avoidance in Relationships Into Early Adulthood.

This study examined early adolescent romantic "churning," defined here as having a large number of boyfriends/girlfriends by age 13, as a problematic marker likely to predict hostility, abuse, and avoidance during conflict in later relationships. A sample of 184 adolescents was followed through age 24 to assess predictions of hostility, abuse, and avoidance during conflict from early romantic churning. Controlling for gender and family income, romantic churning at age 13 predicted relative decreases in peer preference and relative increases in conflict and betrayal in close friendships from ag

Trauma, attachment, and intimate relationships.

Intimate relationships can both affect and be affected by trauma and its sequelae. This special issue highlights research on trauma, attachment, and intimate relationships. Several themes emerged. One theme is the exploration of the associations between a history of trauma and relational variables, with an emphasis on models using these variables as mediators. Given the significance of secure attachment for healthy relationships, it is not surprising that attachment emerges as another theme of this issue. Moreover, a key component of relationships is trust, and so a further theme of this issue

The rape of boys and the impact of sexually predatory environments: review and case reports.

This paper describes the effect of rape and the impact of sexually predatory environments on young boys and the resulting sequelae in adulthood. It presents the literature and the case histories of Jeff and Todd to illustrate the psychic devastation that occurs, and the ensuing attempts at reestablishing boundaries and regaining a sense of autonomy and male identity. Issues including facing powerlessness, betrayal by trusted adults, and the effect of emasculation on developing sexual identity are explored. A study of almost 4,000 siblings by Nelson et al. (2002) showed that a twin who was not

Transcranial direct current stimulation of the LTPJ shifts the agent's behaviors in repeated hold-up game.

The Hold-up problem is very common in transactions with specific investment in incomplete contractual relationships, which is affected by human trusting, cooperative, altruistic behavior. Recent neuroscience studies have shown that TPJ plays an important role in social cognition and prosocial decision-making. However, most of the studies have focused on RTPJ in the right hemisphere, while few studies have focused on LTPJ in the left hemisphere. The purpose of this study is to modulate the excitability of LTPJ through transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and to explore the effects of

Childhood Sexual Abuse and Fear of Abandonment Moderate the Relation of Intimate Partner Violence to Severity of Dissociation.

Betrayal trauma theory proposes a relation between intimate partner violence (IPV) and dissociation, suggesting that dissociation among victims of IPV may function to restrict awareness of abuse in order to preserve attachments perceived as vital. We investigated two factors that may moderate the relation between IPV and dissociation-childhood sexual abuse (CSA) severity and fear of abandonment-among 348 women currently in a relationship. The relation between frequency of IPV (sexual and physical) and dissociation (amnesia and depersonalization) was moderated by CSA severity and fear of abando

De Clérambault's Syndrome (Erotomania) and claims of psychiatric malpractice.

De Clérambault's Syndrome or Erotomania was originally described as a delusional disorder in which a woman believes that an older man of higher social status is passionately in love with her. The patient's relentless pursuit of the delusional love object, often with escalating intrusiveness, may eventually involve threats or overt acts of retaliation, in response to repeated rejection, unrequited love, or alleged betrayal. Cases from the literature are reviewed in which the delusional romantic attachment involves the patient's psychiatrist or another medical specialist. The authors present a c

Protecting the Protectors: Moral Injury, Coping Styles, and Mental Health of UK Police Officers and Staff Investigating Child Sexual Abuse Material.

Police officers and staff who investigate child sexual abuse material (CSAM) may be at elevated risk for mental health problems, which may be mitigated or exacerbated by institutional and interpersonal factors. The current work examined mental health in a large sample of UK CSAM investigators (N = 661). Results suggest substantially elevated rates of depression and anxiety but not posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Feeling successful and supported powerfully buffered against negative outcomes, whereas moral injury-particularly feelings of institutional betrayal-predicted worse outcomes. Alt

Use of tramadol in psychiatric care: A comprehensive review and report of two cases.

Tramadol is widely prescribed for treating acute and chronic forms of pain. It is a weak mu-receptor opioid agonist and also increases concentrations of serotonin and noradrenaline within the limbic system of the brain. The therapeutic range of tramadol is relatively wide. Compared with other opioid agonists, there is little risk for developing tolerance and for abuse. Recent models of depression emphasise the subjective experience of a depressive mood as being, in part, a psychologically painful state. It is well established that psychological stress due to social separation/loss, disruption

The moral-behavioural logic of silence: gender, stigma, and disclosure among long-term HIV survivors.

Silence, the deliberate non-disclosure of HIV status - remains an overlooked yet central aspect of long-term antiretroviral therapy (ART) survivorship. While disclosure is promoted as empowerment, such framings may neglect the gendered, relational, and institutional contexts in which non-disclosure occurs. We conducted in-depth interviews with 21 long-term ART users (10-22 years on treatment) in Tamil Nadu, India, and analysed narratives using stigma, social identity, emotion work, spiritual reframing, and institutional betrayal lenses. Silence emerged not as absence, but as a moral-behavioura

Female stalkers and their victims.

Demographic, clinical, and forensic data were gathered in an archival study of 82 female stalkers from the United States, Canada, and Australia. Female stalkers were predominantly single, heterosexual, educated individuals in their mid 30s who had pursued their victims for more than a year. Major mental disorder and personality disorder were suggested, especially borderline personality disorder. They usually threatened violence, and if they did threaten, were more likely to be violent. Frequency of interpersonal violence was 25 percent, but there was limited use of weapons, and injuries were m

A clinical practice model for treatment of college-aged incest survivors.

Adult incest survivors frequently exhibit signs and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder. Many clinicians have geared their group treatment of incest survivors to address these manifestations. Given the nature of the sexual abuse, the early developmental periods in which some trauma occurs, the past and current relationship between the victim and the perpetrator, and the dynamics inherent in this violation and betrayal of trust, love, and power within the family unit, additional clinical concerns and safeguards must be considered. In addition, the struggles of college-aged incest survivor

When the Love is Gone: Religious Coping Strategies for the Well-Being of Selected Catholic Women Who had Experienced Marital Infidelity in the Philippines.

Marital infidelity is widely regarded as an important concern across cultures with multidimensional effects-physical, emotional, psychological, and social. It challenges societal norms, undermines trust within families, and can have far-reaching consequences on the well-being of the betrayed spouse. This study explores how the different religious coping strategies influenced the coping and healing process caused by marital infidelity. It explores the in-depth experience of selected Catholic Filipino women whose husbands cheated. It draws inspiration from their narratives of how they faced, str

Efficacy of Warrior Renew group therapy for female veterans who have experienced military sexual trauma.

This is a program evaluation of the Warrior Renew treatment protocol delivered in an outpatient therapy group for survivors of military sexual trauma (MST) at a Department of Veterans Affairs medical center. The group was delivered via a manualized protocol with 12 weekly topics. It includes coping skills for affect management (e.g., triggers and anxiety) and addresses unique aspects of MST including anger/resentments because of injustice and lack of closure, betrayal, and self-blame. It also addresses interpersonal factors such as relationship patterns and healthy interpersonal skills. This e

Mimetic violence and wartime organ donation between Israeli Jews and Palestinians.

This paper develops a theoretical framework for understanding how wartime organ donation can both interrupt and reinforce cycles of mimetic violence. Drawing on René Girard's mimetic theory, we analyze ethnographic and interview-based material collected between August 2021 and October 2022 from three cases of cross-community organ donation between Israeli Jews and Palestinians during armed conflict, examining how donor families and recipients frame bodily giving as an ethical, relational, and symbolic practice. The findings reveal a dual dynamic. Organ donation functions simultaneously as a bo

Relationship dynamics, intimate partner violence, and HIV prevention practices among serodiscordant couples in Mozambique - a qualitative study.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) and HIV remain intersecting public health challenges in Mozambique, particularly among serodiscordant couples. This qualitative study explored how individuals in serodiscordant relationships described their intimate relationships following the discovery of HIV serodiscordance, and how these relationship dynamics were described in relation to engagement with HIV prevention practices. Eighteen serodiscordant couples (36 individuals) were recruited from health facilities in Gaza Province, Mozambique. Individual in-depth interviews were conducted between October and
