Molecular characterization and PCR-based replicon typing of multidrug resistant Shigella sonnei isolates from an outbreak in Thimphu, Bhutan.

BACKGROUND: Shigella species are an important cause of diarrhea in developing countries. These bacteria normally acquire their antibiotic resistance via several different mobile genetic elements including plasmids, transposons, and integrons involving gene cassettes. During a diarrhea surveillance study in Thimphu, Bhutan in June and July, 2011, Shigella sonnei were isolated more frequently than expected. This study describes the antibiotic resistance of these S. sonnei isolates. METHODS: A total of 29 S. sonnei isolates from Thimphu, Bhutan was characterized for antimicrobial susceptibility

Sexual risk behaviours and population size estimation of men who have sex with men in Bhutan: a cross-sectional survey.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, men who have sex with men (MSM) have a higher HIV risk, with transmission rising in many Asian countries. Limited information on MSM in Bhutan hampers HIV prevention efforts. This study estimates the size of the MSM population and examines risk behaviours at the district and national levels. METHODS: A cross-sectional community-based survey and population size estimation exercises were conducted in Bhutan from November 2019 to December 2020. MSM in 9 of 20 districts in Bhutan were recruited using a hybrid sampling approach, combining peer-referral snowballing, venue-ba

Improving drug charting practices and documentation among nurses in emergency department at a regional hospital, Bhutan: a quality improvement initiative.

INTRODUCTION: Medication error is one of the most common safety issues and the highest prevalence rate of preventable medication-related harm is seen in low-income and middle-income countries especially in Africa and South Asian countries. Studies done elsewhere show that medication errors related to transcription and drug chart documentation can be as high as 70%. A baseline survey done in our department showed that our drug charting practices and documentation are only complete in 45% which could significantly contribute to medication errors and patient safety. METHODS: To address this gap,

Determinants of health seeking behavior of animal bite victims in rabies endemic South Bhutan: a community-based contact-tracing survey.

BACKGROUND: Dog bites are the main source of rabies infection and death in humans, contributing up to 99% of all cases. We conducted a contact-tracing study to evaluate the health seeking and treatment compliance behaviors of people following potential exposure to rabies in rabies endemic south Bhutan. METHODS: Using information from the rabies post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) register, animal-exposed victims who had visited five hospitals in south Bhutan between January and March 2017 were traced and further data were collected from them using a structured questionnaire. A snowballing techniq

Antibiotic resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoea and treatment outcomes of gonococcal urethritis suspected patients in two large hospitals in Bhutan, 2015.

INTRODUCTION: Gonorrhea is a major sexually transmitted infection (STI) globally with increasing trends. Despite limited data, gonorrhea remains an important public health problem in Bhutan. METHODS: A descriptive study was carried out in two Bhutanese hospitals; Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital and Phuentsholing General Hospital in 2015. Patients suspected of gonococcal urethritis were sampled, treated and followed up at two weeks. Gonococcal isolates were identified and tested for antibiotic susceptibility by the Calibrated Dichotomous Sensitivity Test (CDS) method. RESULTS

A knowledge, attitudes, and practices study on ticks and tick-borne diseases in cattle among farmers in a selected area of eastern Bhutan.

Livestock farming plays an important role in supporting the livelihood of resource-poor subsistence farmers in Bhutan. However, ticks and tick-borne diseases (TBDs) are one of the major constraints to livestock farming due to their negative effect on health and production. To date, no study has been conducted in Bhutan to assess farmers' knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) about ticks and TBDs in cattle, although such information is essential in ensuring the development and adoption of effective prevention and control measures. Therefore, a KAP survey was conducted among 246 cattle owners

Examining bhutan's zoonotic disease policies through a One Health lens: a qualitative policy analysis using the policy triangle framework.

BACKGROUND: The recurrent threat of zoonotic diseases necessitates integrated, multisectoral strategies, such as the One Health, which recognises the interconnectedness of human, animal and environmental health. Institutionalising such approaches requires comprehensive national policy frameworks that ensure cross-sectoral coordination, sustainable resource allocation, and robust governance mechanisms. Bhutan adopted One Health in 2013, however, its integration into national policies remains unexplored. This study aimed to examine Bhutan's policy landscape for zoonotic disease prevention and co
