Eating is essential to the survival of any living organism. However, beyond simple nutrition, eating is a source of pleasure that awakens a host of emotions and shapes our first relationships. In eating disorders, this vital process becomes a source of psychological distress, with somatic consequences and an impact on the functioning of the individual and his/her environment. Recently, new diagnostic and etiopathogenic approaches have led to a better understanding of these disorders. The use of innovative techniques, such as neuromodulation, virtual reality, and psychedelics, is paving the way

The purpose of the present study was to examine the efficacy of online Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Binge Eating Disorder (DBT-BED) in reducing eating psychopathology and investigate the factors that influence the severity and frequency of binge eating. Seventy-three individuals seeking treatment for BED participated in 20 two-hour group sessions. Participants completed the Emotional Eating Scale (EES), Binge Eating Scale (BES), and Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) before and after the treatment and at three- and six-month follow-ups. Results from 58 participants were anal

BACKGROUND: While restrictive and compensatory eating disorders (e.g. anorexia and bulimia) are associated with elevated risk of suicide, less is known about binge eating disorder (BED). There is suggestive evidence of a U-shaped relationship between body mass index (BMI) and completed suicide, but fewer studies on suicidal ideation or attempts. This study examined the association between BED, BMI, and suicidality, and assessed whether these relationships varied by gender.
METHODS: Data come from the Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiologic Surveys (N = 14,497). Binge episodes and BED were ass

The Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) is a well-established assessment instrument, but requires substantial training and administration time. The Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) is the corresponding self-report survey, which does not have these demands. Research has shown concordance between these 2 assessment methods, but samples have lacked racial diversity. The current study examined the concordance of the EDE-Q and EDE in a sample of Black patients with binge-eating disorder (BED) and a matched sample of White patients. Participants were 238 (Black n = 119, White n = 119)

OBJECTIVE: Binge-eating disorder (BED) is characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating and is associated with eating disorder and general psychopathology and overweight/obesity. Deficits in cognitive and emotional functioning for eating disorders or obesity have been reported. However, a systematic review on cognitive and emotional functioning for individuals with BED is lacking.
METHOD: A systematic literature search was conducted across three databases (Medline, PubMed, and PsycINFO). Overall, n = 57 studies were included in the present review.
RESULTS: Regarding cognitive functioni

Binge-eating disorder (BED) is the most common eating disorder found in obese people. The present study compared 89 obese participants with and without BED in terms of eating-, weight- and body related shame and guilt and their association to self-esteem and social anxiety. The results illustrated that obese people with BED reported higher scores in disorder specific shame and guilt, except feeling shame about their weight and their body; they suffered from lower self-esteem than obese without BED. The results confirmed that self-esteem is a significant statistical predictor of feeling shame.

OBJECTIVE: The Research Triangle Institute-University of North Carolina Evidence Based Practice Center (RTI-EPC) systematically reviewed evidence on efficacy of treatment for binge eating disorder (BED), harms associated with treatments, factors associated with treatment efficacy, and differential outcome by sociodemographic characteristics.
METHOD: We searched six major databases for studies on the treatment of BED published from 1980 to September, 2005, in all languages against a priori inclusion/exclusion criteria and focused on eating, psychiatric or psychological, or biomarker outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to measure test meal consumption and the changes in hunger and fullness during a test meal in obese individuals with and without binge eating disorder (BED) and normal-weight controls.
METHOD: Twelve women with BED, 12 obese control participants, and 12 normal-weight control participants participated in two single-item test meal sessions. In one session participants were instructed to "binge," and the other eat a normal meal. Participants made ratings of hunger and fullness on visual analog scales after every 75-g increment of food.

CONTEXT: Binge-eating disorder (BED)-a syndrome that only recently has attracted scientific attention-is often seen in obese individuals, especially those with severe obesity. However, it remains unclear whether BED represents an etiologically distinct behavioral phenotype of obesity or simply a nonspecific eating pattern sometimes seen in obese individuals.
OBJECTIVE: To test whether BED aggregates in families independently of obesity, and if so, whether familial factors for BED also independently increase the risk of obesity.

The International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition (ICD-10) defines atypical bulimia nervosa (ABN) as an eating disorder that encompasses several different syndromes, including the DSM-IV binge eating disorder (BED). We investigated whether patients with BED can be differentiated clinically from patients with ABN who do not meet criteria for BED. Fifty-three obese patients were examined using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV and the ICD-10 criteria for eating disorders. All volunteers completed the Binge Eating Scale (BES), the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Symptom Che

The diagnostic concept of binge eating disorder (BED) was introduced in response to the clinical observation of Stunkard (1959) that some people with obesity have recurrent episodes of binge eating. We suggest that the DSM-IV concept of BED has resulted in the recruitment of heterogeneous research samples, amongst which are some people with BED, as described by Stunkard, some with bulimia nervosa, some with other types of eating disorder, and some with no eating disorder. We consider the difficulties distinguishing BED from other forms of overeating, especially in patients with obesity, and fr

Overvaluation of shape and weight in binge-eating disorder (BED) is associated with greater eating-disorder psychopathology and greater weight-bias internalization, which are-in turn-associated with poorer mental and physical health. Little is known, however, about the significance of other cognitive processes, such as rumination, in BED. This study examined rumination and overvaluation of shape/weight with eating-disorder psychopathology and weight-bias internalization among 237 treatment-seeking patients with BED and comorbid obesity. Hierarchical multiple regressions indicated that ruminati

OBJECTIVE: We sought to elucidate the nature and extent of impairment in quality of life among individuals with binge eating disorder (BED) with and without the overvaluation of weight or shape ("overvaluation").
METHOD: Subgroups of women - probable BED with overvaluation (n = 102), probable BED without overvaluation (n = 72), obese individuals reporting no binge eating ("obese control", n = 40), and "normal weight" individuals reporting no binge eating ("healthy control," n = 40) - were recruited from a community-based sample in which individuals with eating disorder symptoms were over-repr

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the clinical usefulness of the Portuguese version of the Binge Eating Scale (BES) to assess binge eating disorder (BED) in a clinical sample. The BES is a self-reported instrument developed to identify binge eaters within the obese population. The scale, at the cutoff point of 17, was compared with the Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-IV-Patient version (SCID-I/P). It was administered to 178 obese Brazilian women, aged 18 to 60 years, seeking treatment for obesity at an outpatient clinic. To assess the test-retest reliability, 121 indiv

OBJECTIVE: Different subtypes of eating disorders (ED) show dysfunctional eating behaviors such as overeating and/or restriction in response to emotions. Yet, systematic comparisons of all major EDs on emotional eating patterns are lacking. Furthermore, emotional eating correlates with body mass index (BMI), which also differs between EDs and thus confounds this comparison.
METHOD: Interview-diagnosed female ED patients (n = 204) with restrictive (AN-R) or binge-purge anorexia nervosa (AN-BP), bulimia nervosa (BN), or binge-eating disorder (BED) completed a questionnaire assessing "negative e

Extensive recent research supports a proposal that a new eating disorder, binge eating disorder (BED), be included in DSM-IV. BED criteria define a relatively pure group of individuals who are distressed by recurrent binge eating who do not exhibit the compensatory features of bulimia nervosa. This large number of patients currently can only be diagnosed as eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS). Recognizing this new disorder will help stimulate research and clinical programs for these patients. Fairburn et al.'s critique of BED fails to acknowledge the large body of knowledge that in

Although emerging research suggests insomnia is a significant problem among people with eating disorders, little is known about how insomnia symptoms may serve as risk factors for eating disorder symptoms, treatment outcome, and relapse. University students with non-low-weight eating disorders (N = 89) completed a mobile guided self-help cognitive behavioural intervention for eating disorders. Insomnia and binge-eating symptoms were assessed at pre-treatment and end-of-treatment using the Insomnia Severity Index and Eating Pathology Symptoms Inventory. Multiply imputed datasets were used to te

AIMS: Binge eating disorder (BED) is the most common eating disorder in the United States and Europe and is associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Presence and severity of BED have been associated with worse metabolic control and greater BMI in T2D patients. Glucagon Like Peptide-1 (GLP1) receptors are present in central nervous system areas involved in appetite regulation and treatment with GLP-1 receptor agonists modulates appetite and reward-related brain areas in humans. We evaluated the effects of treatment with dulaglutide on eating behavior in T2D outpatients with BED.

OBJECTIVE: Research has examined various aspects of the validity of the research criteria for binge eating disorder (BED) but has yet to evaluate the utility of Criterion C, "marked distress about binge eating." This study examined the significance of the marked distress criterion for BED using 2 complementary comparison groups.
METHOD: A total of 1,075 community volunteers completed a battery of self-report instruments as part of an Internet study. Analyses compared body mass index (BMI), eating-disorder psychopathology, and depressive levels in 4 groups: 97 participants with BED except for
