Bioaccumulation of metals and effects of a landfill in small mammals Part III: Structural alterations.

The leachates from the Garraf landfill located in a protected site (NE Spain) contain several potentially toxic substances such as heavy metals. Here we report the histopathological alterations produced by this pollution in wild specimens of an omnivorous species, the wood mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus, and an insectivorous species, the greater white-toothed shrew, Crocidura russula. Hepatic tissue presented the most severe alterations in both the species, namely cell cycle arrest (apoptosis and necrosis), inflammation, preneoplasic nodules, vacuolation and microsteatosis. The kidneys were altere

Distribution of total and methylmercury in different ecosystem compartments in the Everglades: implications for mercury bioaccumulation.

We analyzed Hg species distribution patterns among ecosystem compartments in the Everglades at the landscape level in order to explore the implications of Hg distribution for Hg bioaccumulation and to investigate major biogeochemical processes that are pertinent to the observed Hg distribution patterns. At an Everglade-wide scale, THg concentrations were significantly increased in the following order: periphyton<flocculent material (floc)<soil, while relatively high MeHg concentrations were observed in floc and periphyton. Differences in the methylation potential, THg concentration, and MeHg r

Mercury bioaccumulation and trophic transfer in sympatric snapper species from the Gulf of Mexico.

Consumption of marine fish is a major route of toxic methyl mercury (MeHg) exposure to ocean apex predators and human populations. Here we explore the influence of trophic structure on total mercury (Hg) accumulation in red snapper (RS, Lutjanus campechanus) and gray snapper (GS, Lutjanus griseus) from the coastal Louisiana region of the Gulf of Mexico, west of the Mississippi River. The objectives of this investigation were to: (1) determine the effectiveness of the use of offshore recreational fishing charter boats and marinas as sources of fish samples and (2) compare species differences in

Cadmium bioaccumulation and detoxification in the gill and digestive gland of the Antarctic bivalve Laternula elliptica.

Exposure to a sublethal concentration of cadmium (Cd; 50 microg L(-1)) resulted in significantly increased Cd concentrations in the gill and digestive gland of the Antarctic bivalve Laternula elliptica. Continuous accumulation of Cd in the two organs during the 14-day exposure period was associated with sequestration of Cd to both the soluble cytosolic and insoluble particulate cell fractions. However, the contribution of each cell fraction to Cd sequestration differed between the two organs; in the gill, a larger portion of Cd was associated with the insoluble fraction, while in the digestive

Enhanced deposition and bioaccumulation of mercury in Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems facing a coastal polynya.

Mercury emitted by anthropogenic and natural sources occurs in the atmosphere mostly in the gaseous elemental form, which has a long lifetime in tropical and temperate regions. Once deposited in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems the metal is partly re-emitted into the air, thus assuming the characteristics of global pollutants such as persistent volatile chemicals. In polar regions, during and after the sunrise, the photochemically driven oxidation of gaseous Hg by reactive halogens may result in areas of greatly enhanced Hg deposition. Mercury concentrations in soils, lichens, and mosses col

Genotoxicity and bioaccumulation of methyl mercury and mercuric chloride in vivo in the newt Pleurodeles waltl.

Larvae and embryos of the urodele amphibian Pleurodeles waltl were raised for several days in water containing low concentrations of methyl mercuric chloride (CH3HgCl) or mercuric chloride (HgCl2). Examination of squash preparations from treated embryos showed that both compounds induced chromosome breaks and c-mitosis. Examination of blood smears from the larvae demonstrated a higher level of micronucleated erythrocytes in the animals raised in the mercury-containing water than in controls raised in uncontaminated water. The bioaccumulation of both compounds was evaluated by determination of

Bioaccumulation and chronic toxicity of radium-226 to the freshwater bivalve Sphaerium striatinum (Sphaeriidae).

There are limited data on radium-226 (226Ra) activity concentrations that affect freshwater organisms. The chronic toxicity of 226Ra to the native freshwater fingernail clam Sphaerium striatinum was tested under controlled laboratory conditions for 28 days. Clams were exposed to reconstituted soft water dosed with seven nominal 226Ra activity concentrations (0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 5, 10, 25 and 50 Bq L-1) and a control (0 Bq L-1). Radium-226 activity concentrations decreased substantially between static renewals, with approximately 90% of the loss attributed to adsorption to the sand substrate. Conseq

Screening estimates of bioaccumulation factors for 4950 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in aquatic species.

The considerable variability in bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) across aquatic species, driven by the diversity of PFAS, complex water conditions, and species differences, underscores the resource-intensive nature of relying on experimental data. To develop a robust and effective approach for predicting BAFs, a predictive framework using a three-level stacking deep ensemble learning model was established. Initially, we compiled a substantial dataset of BAFs, encompassing a wide variety of PFAS across both marine and freshwater species. The stacking

Selective bioaccumulation of polystyrene nanoplastics in fetal rat brain and damage to myelin development.

Micro(nano)plastic, as a new type of environmental pollutant, have become a potential threat to the life and health of various stages of biology. However, it is not yet clear whether they will affect brain development in the fetal stage. Therefore, this study aims to explore the potential effects of nanoplastics on the development of fetal rat brains. To assess the allocation of NPs (25 nm and 50 nm) in various regions of the fetal brain, pregnant rats were exposed to concentrations (50, 10, 2.5, and 0.5 mg/kg) of PS-NPs. Our results provided evidence of the transplacental transfer of PS-NPs t

Computational simulation of bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of antibiotics mechanisms in aquatic food chain.

Numerous antibiotics have been detected in aquatic ecosystems and induced severe toxic effects on aquatic organisms. However, mechanisms of bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of antibiotics are not adequately discussed, to the best of our knowledge. In this context, the bidirectional selective effect values (BSEV) and trophic transfer efficiency ratio (TTER) of 24 antibiotics in a simulated food chain (Chlorella sorokiniana-Daphnia magna-Danio rerio) were first calculated to mirror the bioaccumulation and biomagnification. Based on estimates above, the multi-output machine learning (ML) mode

A Comparative Study of Mercury Bioaccumulation in Bivalve Molluscs from a Shallow Estuarine Embayment.

In estuarine food webs, bivalve molluscs transfer nutrients and pollutants to higher trophic levels. Mercury (Hg) pollution is ubiquitous, but it is especially elevated in estuaries historically impacted by industrial activities, such as those in the U.S. Northeast. Monomethylmercury (MeHg), the organic form of Hg, is highly bioaccumulative and transferable in the food web resulting in the highest concentrations in the largest and oldest marine predators. Patterns of Hg concentrations in marine bivalve molluscs, however, are poorly understood. In this study, inorganic Hg (iHg), MeHg, and the t

Distribution and bioaccumulation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in the tissues of Yorkshire pig.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in various foods continuously concern the public. Pork and its byproducts, especially from Yorkshire pigs, are the largest meat food consumed by the general population in China. This study aims to investigate the distribution of PCDD/Fs in different tissues of Yorkshire pigs to understand their bioaccumulation. Yorkshire pigs were fed a known amount of PCDD/Fs through fly ash. PCDD/Fs were determined by isotope dilution method with a gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometer. The liver had the highest concentration levels

Persistent, Bioaccumulative, and Toxic Chemicals in Wild Alpine Insects: A Methodological Case Study.

With their high persistence in the environment and their potential for long-range atmospheric transport, persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic chemicals (PBTs) may be among the numerous anthropogenic threats to insect populations worldwide. The effects of PBTs on insects have been investigated in the laboratory, but topical field studies are scarce. A reason might be the multiple challenges faced by PBT-related field studies on wild insects. We studied two species of bumblebees (Bombus spp.) and of ants (Formica spp.) in two high-elevation locations in the Austrian and German Alps to tackle t

Tissue Bioaccumulation and Toxicopathological Effects of Cadmium and Its Dietary Amelioration in Poultry-a Review.

Cadmium (Cd) has been recognized as one of the most toxic heavy metals, which is continuously discharged into environments through anthropogenic (industrial activities, fertilizer production, and waste disposal) and natural sources with anthropogenic sources contributing greater than the natural sources. Therefore, Cd concentration sometimes increases in feeds, fodders, water bodies, and tissues of livestock including poultry in the vicinity of the industrial areas, which causes metabolic, structural, and functional changes of different organs of all animals. In poultry, bioaccumulation of Cd

The influence of legacy contamination on the transport and bioaccumulation of mercury within the Mobile River Basin.

Past industrial use and subsequent release of mercury (Hg) into the environment have resulted in severe cases of legacy contamination that still influence contemporary Hg levels in biota. While the bioaccumulation of legacy Hg is commonly assessed via concentration measurements within fish tissue, this practice becomes difficult in regions of high productivity and methylmercury (MeHg) production, like the Mobile River Basin, Alabama in the southeastern United States. This study applied Hg stable isotope tracers to distinguish legacy Hg from regional deposition sources in sediments, waters, and

Toxicological effects and bioaccumulation of fullerene C60 (FC60) in the marine bivalve Ruditapes philippinarum.

Fullerene C60 (FC60), with its unique physical properties, has been used in many applications in recent decades. The increased likelihood of direct release into the environment has raised interest in understanding the biological effects of FC60 to aquatic organisms. Nowadays, only few studies have analysed FC60 effects and bioaccumulation in marine organisms following in vivo exposure. To provide new data about FC60 toxicity, Ruditapes philippinarum was selected as target species to assess potential adverse effects of the contaminant. Clams were exposed for 1, 3 and 7 days to predicted environ

Effects of temperature, salinity, and sediment organic carbon on methylmercury bioaccumulation in an estuarine amphipod.

Mercury (Hg) is a global contaminant that poses a human health risk in its organic form, methylmercury (MeHg), through consumption of fish and fishery products. Bioaccumulation of Hg in the aquatic environment is controlled by a number of factors expected to be altered by climate change. We examined the individual and combined effects of temperature, sediment organic carbon, and salinity on the bioaccumulation of MeHg in an estuarine amphipod, Leptocheirus plumulosus, when exposed to sediment from two locations in the Gulf of Maine (Kittery and Bass Harbor) that contained different levels of M

Ontogenetic dietary shifts and bioaccumulation of diphenhydramine in Mugil cephalus from an urban estuary.

Though bioaccumulation of pharmaceuticals has received attention in inland waters, studies of pharmaceutical bioaccumulation in estuarine and marine systems are limited. Further, an understanding of pharmaceutical bioaccumulation across size classes of organisms displaying ontogenetic feeding shifts is lacking. We selected the striped mullet, Mugil cephalus, a euryhaline and eurythermal species that experiences dietary shifts with age, to identify whether a model base, diphenhydramine, accumulated in a tidally influenced urban bayou. We further determined whether diphenhydramine accumulation d

Comparison of the Toxicokinetics and Bioaccumulation Potential of Mercury and Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Goldfish (Carassius auratus).

Both mercury (Hg) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) demonstrate food web biomagnification in aquatic ecosystems, yet their toxicokinetics have not been simultaneously contrasted within a common fish species. This study quantifies uptake and elimination rates of Hg and PCBs in goldfish. Fish were exposed to contaminated food containing PCBs and Hg to determine dietary chemical assimilation efficiencies (AEs) and elimination coefficients (ktot). To test first-order kinetics, three exposure regimes were established by varying the proportion of contaminated fish incorporated into the food. Diet
