Bioethics of Translating Limited Evidence into Clinical Practice: Case Study of the Cerebroplacental Ratio.

Bioethics can help address the challenges of translating research into clinical practice in the twenty-first century. The cerebroplacental ratio in obstetrical ultrasound provides a case study of how bioethical principles can help advance practical approaches when evidence is limited. This can help clinicians use cerebroplacental ratio when additional risk factors are present in critical cases that warrant increased surveillance; disclose limited information appropriately; allocate resources; and weigh benefits against risks. Balancing the key ethical principles of respect for autonomy, benefi

Activities of national bioethics committees during the COVID-19 pandemic: publication trends and future challenges.

INTRODUCTION: National bioethics committees (NBCs) are expected to play a crucial role in addressing bioethical challenges. However, few studies have examined the activities of NBCs during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study investigated whether, and to what extent, NBCs were active during this public health emergency. METHODS: Between June and November 2024, we compiled and analyzed statements, opinions, guidelines, and reports on the COVID-19 pandemic issued by NBCs in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries, the Council of Europe, and Singapore. We collected online p

Stakeholder engagement analysis - a bioethics dilemma in patient-targeted intervention: patients with temporomandibular joint disorders.

Modern health care in the field of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing is grounded in fundamental philosophy and epistemology of translational science. Recently in the U.S major national initiatives have been implemented in the hope of closing the gaps that sometimes exist between the two fundamental components of translational science, the translational research and translational effectiveness. Subsequent to these initiatives, many improvements have been made; however, important bioethical issues and limitations do still exist that need to be addressed. One such issue is the stakeholder engagemen

Is an account of identity necessary for bioethics? What post-genomic biomedicine can teach us.

Is a theory of identity necessary for bioethics? In this paper I investigate that question starting from an empirical explication of identity based on post-genomics, in particular on epigenetics. After analysing whether the classic problems a theory of identity has to cope with (fictional transplants; conjoined twins; and definition of death) also affect the proposed epigenetic account of identity, I deal with three topics (the assumption of moral responsibility; decision maintenance in the case of advance directives; and the attribution of value to human beings at given developmental stages)

[Preimplantatory genetic diagnosis and ″saviour sibling″: ethical criteria found in the biomedical and bioethics literature].

UNLABELLED: A bibliographic review on <<saviour sibling>> was performed in order to find out the ethical criteria put forward by the authors on this issue. 23 biomedical and 10 bioethical journals were reviewed and authors for and against the procedure were found. In the Biomedical journals, the main arguments for this issue are that nobody should be hurt and that there is an ethical imperative that is to save a life and that this is preferable to abortion. Those against, believe that an inadequate discrimination against women is being exerted on one hand by subjecting them to a complex, ineff

Bioethical Considerations of Deploying Artificial Intelligence in Clinical Orthopedic Settings: A Narrative Review.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged in orthopedics with the potential to improve diagnostic accuracy, optimize surgical workflows, and support personalized care. We conducted a narrative review exploring the bioethical considerations of AI use in the orthopedic clinical setting, focusing on 4 core principles-autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice-to provide orthopedists with a practical framework for AI's implementation. We utilized the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses framework to conduct a comprehensive PubMed search; 89 articles were evalua

Exploring Distinct Profiles in Paediatric Bioethics-An Analysis of Proactive and Reactive Approaches by Adults.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The field of paediatric bioethics addresses ethical issues in paediatric care, where parental authority often guides medical decisions, but children's preferences should also be considered. Promoting ethical awareness among minors can help them understand complex issues. This study aimed to analyse how sociodemographic, educational, and experiential factors shape adult perspectives on paediatric bioethical issues, particularly concerning pain and death. METHODS: A questionnaire was developed to collect adult views of bioethical issues. The online questionnaire was disse

[Surrogacy: Perspectives, challenges, and bioethical, legal, and epigenetic implications in public health in Argentina].

INTRODUCTION: Surrogacy, understood as the act of carrying a pregnancy on behalf of another person, has expanded as an assisted reproductive technology. Its regulation varies widely: some countries permit it, while others prohibit it altogether. In Argentina, there is no specific legislation regulating surrogacy, leading to significant legal uncertainty. The objective of this work is to analyze the ethical, legal, clinical, and social aspects of surrogacy in Argentina, based on a literature review and the institutional experience of a private hospital in Buenos Aires City. The "Human Subject," "Vulnerable Populations," and Medical History: The Problem of Presentism and the Discourse of Bioethics.

This discussion considers recent historical works of eugenics and sterilization in Canada, but it is not an historiographic review essay or critique per se of this literature. Rather, by focussing on the topic of historic diagnostic categories such as "feeble-minded," "idiot," and "moron," methodological issues such as historical presentism and its possible interactions with the discourse of modern bioethics are examined. The conclusions derived are meant only to be cautionary, and are neither prescriptive nor proscriptive. Medical historians undertaking analyses of currently contentious topic

[BIOETHICS LAWS AND REALITY ON THE GROUND DURING EPIDEMIOLOGICAL STUDIES IN FRENCH GUINEA AND CAMEROON].

The objective of this article is to describe the difficulties encountered, during the twenty last years, to obey the laws of bioethics in force during epidemiological investigations, carried out in French Guiana and in Cameroon. These research tasks aim to better understanding the transmission of two viruses: the human T lymphotropic retrovirus type 1 and the human herpes virus 8. These investigations, carried out in highly endemic villages, for one or two of these viruses, also aim at searching susceptibility genetic factors for infection in children by these viruses. They are scientific rese

Bioethical issues of preventing hereditary diseases with late onset in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia).

Cancer patients display cognitive impairment due, at least partly, to the treatments. Additionally, chemotherapeutic treatments can lead to organ injury, limiting their use, and are likely to have negative impacts on patients' quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate the toxicity of 3-Deazaneplanocin A (DZNep) on several tissues and organs, as well as on cognitive functions. DZNep is an inhibitor of S-adenosylmethionine-dependent methyltransferase (in particular of the histone methyltransferase EZH2) which showed antitumoral functions in preclinical trials but whose effects on

Ethnicity, bioethics, and prenatal diagnosis: the amniocentesis decisions of Mexican-origin women and their partners.

Bioethical standards and counseling techniques that regulate prenatal diagnosis in the United States were developed at a time when the principal constituency for fetal testing was a self-selected group of White, well-informed, middle-class women. The routine use of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) testing, which has become widespread since the mid-1980s, introduced new constituencies to prenatal diagnosis. These new constituencies include ethnic minority women, who, with the exception of women from certain Asian groups, refuse amniocentesis at significantly higher rates than others. This study examines

How useful is Leuven personalism in the world of bioethics? The test case of artificial insemination.

Personalism in ethics denotes any system based upon the value of the person. Several versions of personalist morals have been developed over the past 50 years. Some have had particular interest in the field of medical ethics. Here the question is being studied about one such system, the so-called Leuven personalist morals and its usefulness in today's world of bioethics. In order to test the usefulness of this system the case of artificial insemination is examined both in the early 1970s in the context of the Leuven clinics and, subsequently, in the 1990s in a US policy document. The investiga

International Bioethics Training Program Funded by the Fogarty International Center, 2013-2023: Overview and Trends.

The National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center has supported international bioethics training program funding for over two decades. This program aims to equip trainees with the knowledge and skills to serve as research ethics professionals and bioethics scholars in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and support the ethical conduct of socially valuable research in these countries. In this paper, we update a review of the program's first decade (2000-2012) and describe trends in its second decade (2013-2023), including the successful launch of PhD and post-doctoral training

Individual breast cancer risk assessment in underserved populations: integrating empirical bioethics and health disparities research.

Research suggests that individual breast cancer risk assessment may improve adherence to recommended screening and prevention guidelines, thereby decreasing morbidity and mortality. Further research on the use of risk assessment models in underserved minority populations is critical to informing national public health efforts to eliminate breast cancer disparities. However, implementing individual breast cancer risk assessment in underserved patient populations raises particular ethical issues that require further examination. After reviewing these issues, we will discuss how empirical bioethi

Moral landscapes and everyday life in families with Huntington's disease: aligning ethnographic description and bioethics.

This article is concerned with understanding moral aspects of everyday life in families with Huntington's Disease (HD). It draws on findings from an empirical research project in Denmark in 1998-2002 involving multi-sited ethnography to argue that medical genetics provides a particular framework for conducting life in an HD family. A framework that implies that being informed and making use of genetic services expresses greater moral responsibility than conducting life without drawing on these resources. The moral imperative of engagement in medical genetics is challenged here by two pieces of
