Genomic and evolutionary basis of parthenogenesis in a disease-vector tick species.

Haemaphysalis longicornis is an important tick species and pathogen vector characterized by the co-circulation of triploid parthenogenetic and diploid bisexual strains. However, the evolutionary basis of parthenogenesis in this species is unclear. Here we report reference-quality, haplotype-resolved genome assemblies of the parthenogenetic strain and two reference-quality genomes of the bisexual strains. Comparative genomic analysis revealed high collinearity between the parthenogenetic and bisexual genomes, with a stable chromosomal architecture maintained among the three haplotypes of the pa

A General Principle of Neuronal Evolution Reveals a Human-Accelerated Neuron Type Potentially Underlying the High Prevalence of Autism in Humans.

The remarkable ability of a single genome sequence to encode a diverse collection of distinct cell types, including the thousands of cell types found in the mammalian brain, is a key characteristic of multicellular life. While it has been observed that some cell types are far more evolutionarily conserved than others, the factors driving these differences in the evolutionary rate remain unknown. Here, we hypothesized that highly abundant neuronal cell types may be under greater selective constraint than rarer neuronal types, leading to variation in their rates of evolution. To test this, we le

Plant sex-determining genes and the genetics of the evolution towards dioecy.

Thanks to significant advances in genomics and bioinformatics, research on plant sex-determining genes has made remarkable progress over the past decade. Since the discovery of the OGI-MeGI sex-determination system in persimmons in 2014, candidate sex-determining genes have been identified in a dozen flowering plant species. In this review, we examine these newly discovered genes and explore what they reveal about the genetic basis of the evolution of dioecy. While these genes are diverse, many belong to key developmental pathways previously described in other species. Two primary evolutionary

Origin and evolutionary trajectories of brown algal sex chromosomes.

Research on the biology and evolution of sex chromosomes has primarily focused on diploid XX/XY and ZW/ZZ systems. In contrast, the rise, evolution and demise of U/V systems has remained an enigma. Here we analyse genomes of nine brown algal species with different sexual systems to determine the history of their sex determination. U/V sex chromosomes emerged between 450 and 224 million years ago, when a region containing the pivotal male-determinant MIN ceased recombining. Seven ancestral genes within the sex-determining region show remarkable conservation over this vast evolutionary time, alt

Bursts of Rapid Diversification, Dispersals Out of Southern Africa, and Two Origins of Dioecy Punctuate the Evolution of Asparagus.

The genus Asparagus arose ∼9 to 15 million years ago (Ma), and transitions from hermaphroditism to dioecy (separate sexes) occurred ∼3 to 4 Ma. Roughly 27% of extant Asparagus species are dioecious, while the remaining are bisexual with monoclinous flowers. As such, Asparagus is an ideal model taxon for studying the early stages of dioecy and sex chromosome evolution in plants. Until now, however, understanding of diversification and shifts from hermaphroditism to dioecy in Asparagus has been hampered by the lack of robust species tree estimates for the genus. In this study, a genus-wide phylo

Plant evolution: Convergent evolution of root barriers across vascular plants.

A compelling new study on the evolution of plant cell types shows that the root endodermis has evolved independently twice. These two paths have led to identical structures (Casparian strips) that share no conserved molecular mechanisms.

Evolutionary diversification via modular compliance for self-reconfigurable continuum robots.

Modular self-reconfigurable robots promise adaptability through changes in morphology, yet most existing systems remain limited by low functional density, rigid modules, and constrained docking interfaces that restrict scalable locomotion and manipulation. In contrast, biological organisms achieve rich behavioral diversity through repeated compliant segments combined with flexible articulated body architectures to support locomotion, manipulation, and environmental interaction. Here, we present a modular self-reconfigurable continuum robot that exploits modular compliance as a unifying design

Complex reproduction reflects life-history trade-offs in early Cambrian multicellular algae.

The Cambrian explosion diversified metazoan consumers and restructured marine food webs, yet how planktonic primary producers responded to this escalating ecological pressure remains poorly understood. Here we report Polyostiosphaera operculata gen. et sp. nov., an exceptionally preserved multicellular alga from the early Cambrian Kuanchuanpu Biota, South China. High-resolution X-ray microtomography, light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy reveal an outer envelope of small cells enclosing a membrane-bound cluster of larger cells, with regularly spaced apertures, in the best-preserved

An Asgard archaeon from a modern analog of ancient microbial mats.

One of the most significant events in the evolution of life is the origin of the eukaryotic cell. Despite recent advances, the driving forces behind the emergence of complex eukaryotic attributes remain a gap in our knowledge. One model proposes that eukaryotic cells evolved via symbiosis between sulfate-reducing bacteria and hydrogen-producing archaea in ancient microbial mats. Here, we describe a highly enriched (89%) culture of a novel Asgard archaeon, Nerearchaeum marumarumayae, along with a bacterium Stromatodesulfovibrio nilemahensis from a modern microbial mat. The N. marumarumayae geno

Sex-allocation trade-offs and their genetic architecture revealed by experimental evolution.

The theory of sex allocation is hailed as one of evolutionary biology's great successes. But while it has successfully predicted strategies of resource allocation to male versus female offspring under a wide range of conditions in species with separate sexes, it has been difficult to verify the fundamental assumption of a direct genetic trade-off between male and female allocations when both sexes are expressed together in the same individuals. This trade-off assumption supposes that mutations that increase an individual's male allocation reduce its female allocation, and vice versa. Here, we

From Darwin to teleonomy: A categorical final-cause calculus for evolution.

We propose a teleonomical calculus for evolution that generalizes the classical Darwin-Fisher picture by making final causes - what systems keep true about themselves - into mathematical objects with universal properties. In our framework, the state space is a category C acted upon (laxly) by time T, and viability constraints live in a fibration p:E→C. An endogenous functor Gt:C→E extracts invariants from the system (e.g. topological features via persistent homology, sheaf gluing compatibilities, symmetry/conservation laws, or behavioral attractors). The present compatible with realizing these

Flower size evolution in the Southwest Pacific.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Despite accelerating interest in island evolution, the general evolutionary trajectories of island flowers remain poorly understood. In particular the island rule, which posits that small organisms become larger and large organisms become smaller after island colonization, while tested for various plant traits, has never been tested for flower size. Here, we provide the first test of the island rule for flower size for animal- and wind-pollinated flowers, and the first evidence for generalized in situ evolution of flower size on islands. METHODS: Focusing on ten archipela

Paleontology: Gliders in the storm.

Fossils fascinate by the immediacy with which they let us envisage ancient life; but understanding how past animals lived requires - paradoxically - understanding how they died and fossilized. Drawing on a treasure trove of pterosaurs, a new study links biases in the fossil record to extreme weather events in deep time.

A deep dive into the coelacanth phylogeny.

The discovery in 1938 of a living coelacanth, Latimeria chalumnae, triggered much research and discussion on the evolutionary history and phylogeny of these peculiar sarcopterygian fishes. Indeed, coelacanths were thought to represent the 'missing link' between fishes and tetrapods, a phylogenetic position which is now dismissed. Since the first analyses using a phylogenetic approach were carried out three decades ago, a relatively similar data matrix has been consistently used by researchers for running analyses, with no significant changes aside from the addition of new taxa and characters,

The costs of reproduction can and do differ between the sexes.

BACKGROUND: Measuring costs of male versus female reproduction in cosexual species is challenging because the currency and timing of allocation can differ between the two sexual functions. In contrast, costs of male versus female reproduction can be measured indirectly in dioecious species in terms of sex-specific life-history trade-offs with growth and survival. Yet despite abundant evidence for differences in life history between males and females, there remains confusion over how such differences should be interpreted. SCOPE: Here, I address misconceptions in interpreting potential differe

Evolution in the clinic: Maladaptive units and "minor anomalies".

It is here argued that the application of the term "minor anomalies" is often imprecise and likely outdated. In the past, the designation was used indiscriminately to refer to a great variety of unrelated morphogenetic phenomena. Also, the term does not discriminate between mild qualitative defects of development (mild malformations) and quantitative variants of normal structure. The human face was formed by natural and sexual selection. Morphological and morphogenetic analyses have shown that the human face with its skin, muscles, nerves, arteries, veins, glands, and lymphatics is a complex s

Evolution of division of labour in mutualistic symbiosis.

Mutualistic symbiosis can be regarded as interspecific division of labour, which can improve the productivity of metabolites and services but deteriorate the ability to live without partners. Interestingly, even in environmentally acquired symbiosis, involved species often rely exclusively on the partners despite the lethal risk of missing partners. To examine this paradoxical evolution, we explored the coevolutionary dynamics in symbiotic species for the amount of investment in producing their essential metabolites, which symbiotic species can share. Our study has shown that, even if obtainin

Evolution of high tooth replacement rates in sauropod dinosaurs.

BACKGROUND: Tooth replacement rate can be calculated in extinct animals by counting incremental lines of deposition in tooth dentin. Calculating this rate in several taxa allows for the study of the evolution of tooth replacement rate. Sauropod dinosaurs, the largest terrestrial animals that ever evolved, exhibited a diversity of tooth sizes and shapes, but little is known about their tooth replacement rates. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We present tooth replacement rate, formation time, crown volume, total dentition volume, and enamel thickness for two coexisting but distantly related and

Evolution, epidemiology, and population genetics of black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae).

More than 2000 species of black flies feed on vertebrate blood; 1.5% of all species are vectors of pathogens that cause human diseases. Of nine simuliid-borne animal diseases, only two, mansonellosis and onchocerciasis, afflict humans. Onchocerciasis is a debilitating disease infecting an estimated 40 million people in Africa, Latin America, and Yemen, whereas mansonellosis is a mild disease in the Neotropics. Cytogenetic studies of natural populations of more than 500 species of black flies have revealed that the classic morphospecies of taxonomists is typically a complex of two or more repro
