Methyl-nitrocatechols: atmospheric tracer compounds for biomass burning secondary organic aerosols.

Detailed chemical analysis of wintertime PM₁₀ collected at a rural village site in Germany showed the presence of a series of compounds that correlated very well with levoglucosan, a known biomass burning tracer compound. Nitrated aromatic compounds with molecular formula C₇H₇NO₄ (M(w) 169) correlated particularly well with levoglucosan, indicating that they originated from biomass burning as well. These compounds were identified as a series of methyl-nitrocatechol isomers (4-methyl-5-nitrocatechol, 3-methyl-5-nitrocatechol, and 3-methyl-6-nitrocatechol) based on the comparison of their chroma

Simultaneous flue gas bioremediation and reduction of microalgal biomass production costs.

A flue gas originating from a municipal waste incinerator was used as a source of CO(2) for the cultivation of the microalga Chlorella vulgaris, in order to decrease the biomass production costs and to bioremediate CO(2) simultaneously. The utilization of the flue gas containing 10-13% (v/v) CO(2) and 8-10% (v/v) O(2) for the photobioreactor agitation and CO(2) supply was proven to be convenient. The growth rate of algal cultures on the flue gas was even higher when compared with the control culture supplied by a mixture of pure CO(2) and air (11% (v/v) CO(2)). Correspondingly, the CO(2) fixat

Biosorption of chromium(VI) and arsenic(V) onto methylated yeast biomass.

Yeast biomass was methylated in a 0.1 M HCl methyl alcohol solution at room temperature and the methylated yeast (MeYE) was applied to the adsorptive separation of Cr(VI) and As(V) anions from aqueous solutions. At near-neutral pH, while Cr(VI) and As(V) anions were scarcely adsorbed onto unmethylated yeast biomass, the amounts adsorbed increased with increasing methylation degree. The amount of Cr(VI) adsorbed onto MeYE was almost constant at pH 4-6 and decreased with increasing pH above pH 6. The amount of As(V) adsorbed onto MeYE was rather lower than that of Cr(VI) and it had a peak at abo

Stoichiometric analysis of microbial communities links function, structure, and biomass carrying capacity.

Microbial communities carry out important ecological functions. Their activities emerge from interactions between species, often potentiated by metabolic traits. We lack a quantitative understanding of how these traits shape community properties. Here, we present theory for microbial communities, leveraging concepts from quantitative microbial physiology. We focus on how steady-state metabolic exchanges between species determine their fractional abundances, given their biomass and byproduct yields on nutrients. We start by deriving formal conditions for the steady states of communities of micr

Economic analysis and optimization of renewable natural gas production from prairie biomass.

This study coupled continuous anaerobic digestion (AD) experiments with a techno‑economic model to evaluate renewable natural gas (RNG) production from co‑digesting prairie biomass with beef manure on farm. A Box-Behnken design quantified the effects of solids retention time (SRT), organic load (OL), prairie:manure ratio (P:M), and 50% liquid‑digestate recirculation on methane yield, digestate nutrient value as fertilizer, and residual methane potential of the liquid fraction. Experiment‑based regressions were used to drive process models for continuously stirred AD systems with one‑stage and

Enhanced biomass and desulfurization by recombinant Rhodococcus qingshengii IGTS8 in bioreactor cultures.

Rhodococcus qingshengii IGTS8 is a model strain well-known for its ability to remove sulfur from dibenzothiophene (DBT) and its derivatives via the 4S pathway, a process that catalyzes the conversion of DBT to 2-hydroxybiphenyl (2-HBP) and sulfite without losses in the energy content of the fuel. The desulfurization ability of the wild-type (wt) strain is limited due to repression of the dsz operon in the presence of bioavailable sulfur sources, including methionine and in some cases, sulfates, whereas genetic deletion of the reverse transsulfuration pathway enzymes, Cbs and MetB, alleviates t

Coupling of CO2 electroreduction and biomass electrooxidation: challenges, design principles, and perspectives.

Sustainable carbon management through innovative strategies is essential to address the dual crises of climate change and resource scarcity. Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) and biomass electrooxidation (BEO) represent two promising pathways for converting CO2 and renewable biomass into valuable chemicals. While previous reviews have broadly covered replacing the energy-intensive anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for CO2RR, they often lack an integrated analysis of the complementary challenges and design principles for CO2RR & BEO coupling system. This review fills this gap

Sustainable Land Management Practices Enhance Soil Microbial Biomass Carbon in Global Croplands.

Soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC) is an essential indicator of microbial activity and soil health, reflecting ecosystem functioning and sustainability. We synthesized data from 221 peer-reviewed studies from 1988 to 2024 to evaluate the global effects of six sustainable land management (SLM) practices-organic amendment, inorganic fertilization, integrated fertilization, conservation tillage, crop diversification, and crop residue management-on SMBC in global croplands. Except for inorganic fertilization, which had a slight negative effect, all practices were associated with higher SMBC conc

Biomass and coccolith productions in Chrysotila sp. in high density cultivation system.

Coccolithophores are unicellular marine microalgae capable of producing calcium carbonate exoskeletons composed of micrometric scales called coccoliths. Since they require CO₂ for both calcification and biomass production, they are expected to exhibit a potentially higher CO₂ fixation, making them promising candidates for applications in biological carbon capture systems. In addition, coccoliths themselves are considered high-value products due to their potential applications in many fields such as nanobiotechnology. In this study, a high cell density culture of Chrysotila sp. was tested using

Decoding Solvent Effects in Electrocatalytic Biomass Valorization: Levulinic Acid to γ‑Valerolactone.

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) of biomass-derived levulinic acid (LA) offers a sustainable route to prepare γ-valerolactone (GVL), a versatile green solvent and fuel additive. Yet despite its promise, most studies overlook the decisive role of the solvent environment, conflating conversion with true product yield. Here we disentangle these effects by systematically probing LA reduction over GC, Cu, Ni, and CuNi cathodes in three contrasting solvents (MeOH, DMSO, IPA) at two temperatures (15 and 35 °C). A clear design rule emerges: the solvents dictate the conversion ceiling, while temper

Inducible flocculation in Komagataella phaffii enables enhanced biomass separation for biopharmaceutical production.

Biomass separation represents a critical bottleneck in Komagataella phaffii-based biopharmaceutical processes, as typically high cell densities of 40 - 50 % create significant operational, technical and economic challenges for harvest operations. Yeast cell aggregation (flocculation) provides a solution to accelerate cell sedimentation by increasing particle size, thus allowing to improve biomass-supernatant separation efficiency during both natural gravity settling and (continuous) centrifugation operations. This study demonstrates successful engineering of K. phaffii strains with an inducibl

Potential of Microalgal Biomass Production in Coastal Deserts for Carbon Dioxide Removal.

High photosynthetic yields and the ability to grow without fresh water make microalgae interesting mechanisms for carbon dioxide removal (CDR). We characterize two CDR systems which grow microalgae in seawater in coastal deserts─microalgal bioenergy with carbon capture and storage and microalgal biomass burial─and evaluate their potential when using carbon sourced from the atmosphere or ocean to meet CDR objectives via a comparison with direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS). By deriving and validating a theoretical model of chemically enhanced carbon dioxide mass transfer, we identify

Aboveground biomass density maps for post-hurricane Ian forest monitoring in Florida.

Hurricane Ian caused aboveground biomass density (AGBD) losses across Florida's forests in the United States, highlighting the need for accurate, large-scale monitoring tools. We combined Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) LiDAR data with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and passive optical satellite imagery to model GEDI AGBD as a function of image-derived data, enabling predictions across the study area and producing continuous AGBD maps. Validation using in situ field data demonstrated high model performance, with an R2 of 0.93 and a root mean square difference (RMSD) of 39.3%. Sp

Integrated Electrochemical Biomass Oxidation and CO2 Reduction over Ultra-wide Potential Window.

Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) coupled with biomass oxidation using renewable electricity is considered as a promising strategy for carbon management. However, achieving both high selectivity and large current density over wide potential window remains a significant challenge, hindering practical applications. In this study, a Ni/Fe dual metal-atom catalyst is developed for CO2 reduction, achieving nearly 100 % CO selectivity across an ultra-wide potential window of 1.6 V, surpassing state-of-the-art catalysts. Remarkably, this high CO selectivity is maintained above 98 % ev

Design of electroactive consortium synthesizing flora enables synergistic biomass-to-bioenergy conversion.

Efficient biomass-to-energy conversion is key to sustainable development. We engineered a dual-functional synthetic microbial communities(SMC) (Bacillus subtilis XJU-1, XJU-2, Bacillus cereus XJU-3, and Enterobacter hormaechei XJU-5) to simultaneously degrade marine biomass and generate electricity in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Using porous nickel-molybdenum foam as the anode, the 2-L MFCs achieved 941.67 mV and 443.67 mW m-3. Multi-omics analyses showed that vitamin B6 and amino acid pathways boosted NADH/FADH2 production, while higher SDH and COX activities enhanced electron transfer. The

Thermomechanical biorefining of Pinus radiata biomass to produce biochemicals using reactive extrusion.

Currently, ca. 30 million m3 of Pinus radiata are harvested annually in New Zealand to produce timber, pulp and paper, with by-products such as bark and sawdust generated during processing. The most common use for sawdust is as a solid fuel for process heat. However, it is a feedstock that can be processed into platform biochemicals. Although conversion processes focusing on biochemical production from wood are scarce, they are becoming more commercially established. Here, reactive extrusion was explored as a continuous, fast method to depolymerise sawdust into soluble biochemicals with reside
