Quantifying mutual hesitation and identifying kinematic predictors in near-collision avoidance in walking.

Humans navigate crowded environments by anticipating others' movements. When such mutual anticipation fails, this may result in collisions or near-collisions. Previous research on mutual anticipation in collision avoidance has highlighted the importance of kinematic information. However, it remains unclear how full-body kinematics support mutual anticipation in truly interactive near-collision avoidance scenarios. We introduce cross-recurrence quantification analysis (CRQA) as a novel method to quantify the degree of mutual hesitation (i.e., spatiotemporal overlap between walkers) in near-coll

The Oral Sensory System and Dynamic Modulation of Tongue Kinematics During Chewing in a Carnivoran Omnivore.

The tongue plays a crucial role in feeding by positioning, manipulating, and transporting the bolus during chewing and swallowing. As a muscular hydrostat, its biomechanical function relies on regional deformations and coordinated movements with the jaw. Sensory feedback from oral afferents, particularly via the trigeminal nerve, is critical for modulating these movements and deformations. This study investigates how food texture and oral sensory perturbations influence tongue kinematics in an omnivorous carnivoran, the skunk (Mephitis mephitis). Using X-ray Reconstruction of Moving Morphology

Football/Soccer: A Review of Imaging Findings and Biomechanics.

Football (soccer) is an intensely physical sport with a high prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries. Diagnostic imaging is critical for evaluating and managing these injuries effectively. Football players are particularly prone to injuries involving the lower extremities, especially the knees. Goalkeepers, due to their unique role and use of hands, face a higher risk of upper extremity injuries. Understanding the biomechanics of trauma, such as rapid changes in direction and high-speed running, is essential for anticipating injury patterns. This review article examines the imaging characterist

Physical forces supporting hyphal growth.

Hyphae are viscoelastic tubes whose internal pressure pushes the cell membrane against the inner surface of the cell wall. Catalytic yielding of the wall allows this turgor to force its polymers apart as new materials are added to the surface of the growing tip. Turgor drops slightly as the wall expands, creating a pressure gradient that causes the cytoplasm to flow toward the tip. These physiological processes affect the rate of extension of the hypha and determine the magnitude of the force that it uses for invasive growth. This paper provides an overview of the experimental basis for this d

Ultrasonographic insights into the complex anatomy and biomechanical dynamics of the Achilles tendon and its fascicles: a pictorial essay.

This pictorial essay clarifies the complex anatomical and ultrasonographic features of the Achilles tendon. Utilizing high-frequency ultrasound probes (12-18 MHz), the study visualizes the tripartite segmentation of the tendon as it relates to anatomical fascicles. Notably, there is variability in the ultrasound visibility of fascicles and this partition influences biomechanical properties and susceptibility to injury. This essay not only enhances the understanding of Achilles tendon anatomy but also underscores the importance of anatomical knowledge for comprehending associated pathologies. T

Biomechanical associations with bone stress injuries in running: A scoping review.

The purpose of this scoping review is to evaluate biomechanical variables associated with bone stress injuries (BSI) in active individuals who participate in running. The goal of identifying differences in biomechanics by anatomical location of injury, gender, and/or primary physical activity is to help inform clinical management of BSI. A structured literature search initiated in September 2024 resulted in 21 studies (16 retrospective and 5 prospective) that were included in the analysis. Among retrospective studies, several biomechanical factors were found to be associated with BSI isolated

Investigation of the Optic Nerve Head Morphology Influence to the Optic Nerve Head Biomechanics - Regional Deformation Analysis.

Glaucoma is a prevalent eye disease that can lead to permanent blindness when the optic nerve at the optic nerve head (ONH) is damaged by shearing forces. The Lamina Cribrosa (LC), located in the ONH and closely connected to the sclera, plays a crucial role in determining whether the optic nerve passing through it will sustain shearing-induced damage. Understanding LC morphology is therefore essential for studying the causes and progression of glaucoma. This study aims to analyze the influence of varying LC anterior surface morphologies to the distribution of deformation across different regio

Pressure-induced circumferential and longitudinal deformations of tracheal tubes in the American cockroach.

Insects exchange gases through a complex internal network of tubes known as tracheae, which deliver oxygen directly to tissues and remove carbon dioxide. In some species, these tracheal tubes undergo active compression, periodically collapsing and reinflating to facilitate internal airflow. The mechanical behavior of the tracheal system is governed by its structural design, which in turn influences its physiological role in respiration. Despite the critical importance of tracheal material properties in insect respiratory function, there are relatively few published studies that characterize th

Dirt Track Surface Preparation and Associated Differences in Speed, Stride Length, and Stride Frequency in Galloping Horses.

In racehorses, the risk of musculoskeletal injury is linked to a decrease in speed and stride length (SL) over consecutive races prior to injury. Surface characteristics influence stride parameters. We hypothesized that large changes in stride parameters are found during galloping in response to dirt racetrack preparation. Harrowing of the back stretch of a half-mile dirt racetrack was altered in three individual lanes with decreasing depth from the inside to the outside. Track underlay compaction and water content were changed between days. Twelve horses (six on day 2) were sequentially gallo

Does swimming at the bottom serve as a hydraulic advantage for benthic fish Neogobius melanostomus Pallas (1814) in flowing water?

Benthic fish, such as the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus Pallas, 1814) tend to swim near the bottom, especially at increased water velocities. To test whether these fish have a hydraulic advantage from swimming near the bottom and how the substrate affects the forces experienced, we measured the hydraulic forces experienced by preserved fish in a flow channel. The fish were tested 5.0 mm above the bottom at smooth and rough surface, and in the water column (10.0 cm elevation) above smooth and rough surface at 0.95 m/s water velocity. No significant effect among the mean hydraulic forces wa

A guide to inter-joint coordination characterization for discrete movements: a comparative study.

Characterizing human movement is essential for understanding movement disorders, evaluating progress in rehabilitation, or even analyzing how a person adapts to the use of assistive devices. Thanks to the improvement of motion capture technology, recording human movement has become increasingly accessible and easier to conduct. Over the last few years, multiple methods have been proposed for characterizing inter-joint coordination. Despite this, there is no real consensus regarding how these different inter-joint coordination metrics should be applied when analyzing the coordination of discret

Quantifying whole bladder biomechanics using the novel pentaplanar reflected image macroscopy system.

Optimal bladder compliance is essential to urinary bladder storage and voiding functions. Calculated as the change in filling volume per change in pressure, bladder compliance is used clinically to characterize changes in bladder wall biomechanical properties that associate with lower urinary tract dysfunction. But because this method calculates compliance without regard to wall structure or wall volume, it gives little insight into the mechanical properties of the bladder wall during filling. Thus, we developed Pentaplanar Reflected Image Macroscopy (PRIM): a novel ex vivo imaging method to a

Towards the optimization of passive undulatory locomotion on land: mathematical and physical models.

The current study investigates the body-environment interaction and exploits the passive viscoelastic properties of the body to perform undulatory locomotion. The investigations are carried out using a mathematical model based on a dry frictional environment, and the results are compared with the performance obtained using a physical model. The physical robot is a wheel-based modular system with flexible joints moving on different substrates. The influence of the spatial distribution of body stiffness on speed performance is also investigated. Our results suggest that the environment affects t

Impact forces in backward falls: Subject-specific video-based rigid body simulation of backward falls.

A critical missing component in the study of real-world falls is the ability to accurately determine impact forces resulting from the fall. Subject-specific rigid body dynamic (RBD) models calibrated to video captured falls can quantify impact forces and provide additional insights into injury risk factors. RBD models were developed based on five backward falls captured on surveillance video in long-term care facilities in British Columbia, Canada. Model joint stiffness and initial velocities were calibrated to match the kinematics of the fall and contact forces were calculated. The effect of

Propulsion Calculated by Force and Displacement of Center of Mass in Treadmill Cross-Country Skiing.

This study evaluated two approaches for estimating the total propulsive force on a skier's center of mass (COM) with double-poling (DP) and V2-skating (V2) skiing techniques. We also assessed the accuracy and the stability of each approach by changing the speed and the incline of the treadmill. A total of 10 cross-country skiers participated in this study. Force measurement bindings, pole force sensors, and an eight-camera Vicon system were used for data collection. The coefficient of multiple correlation (CMC) was calculated to evaluate the similarity between the force curves. Mean absolute f

Validation of 2D Force Measurement Roller Ski and Practical Application.

Several methods could be used to measure the forces from skis or roller skis in cross-country skiing. Equipment that could measure medio-lateral forces may be of good help for investigating the relevant skating techniques. The aim of this study was to validate a pair of newly designed two-dimensional force measurement roller skis. The vertical and medio-lateral forces which were perpendicular to the body of the roller ski could be measured. Forces were resolved into the global coordinate system and compared with the force components measured by a force plate. A static and dynamic loading situa
