Current and Future Research Trends in Agricultural and Biomedical Applications of Medicinal Mushrooms and Mushroom Products (Review).

Here, we analyze the status and future trends in the study of medicinal mushrooms (MMs) in agriculture and biomedicine. Fruiting bodies of mushrooms are heterotrophic organisms that obtain all their nutritive requirements from the substrate. Mushroom substrates are agro-industrial plant residues and forest byproducts, which are usually called lignocellulosic materials. A good substrate for mushroom growth must be suitable both chemically and physically, as well as have the proper conditions for microbial activities. Under suitable conditions, mushrooms can excrete key enzymes for unlocking ind

Rudolf Virchow's medical school dissertation on rheumatism and the cornea: overlooked tribute to the cornea in biomedical research.

PURPOSE: To critique Rudolf Virchow's medical school dissertation on rheumatism and the cornea and to determine whether it might have anticipated his remarkable career in medicine. METHODS: Review of the English translation of Rudolf Virchow's de Rheumate Praesertim Corneae written in 1843. RESULTS: The dissertation was more than 7000 words long. Virchow considered rheumatism as an irritant disorder not induced by acid as traditionally thought but by albumin. He concluded that inflammation was secondary to a primary irritant and that the "seat" of rheumatism was "gelatinous" (connective) tis

Differences in the gastrointestinal microbiota of specific pathogen free mice: an often unknown variable in biomedical research.

Large differences were found in the numbers of facultatively anaerobic Gram-negative bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract of mice from 3 major specific pathogen free (SPF) units in Australia. The species isolated also differed between mouse colonies. In one unit the presence of Enterobacter cloacae was found to dramatically influence the survival of mice following total body irradiation. This finding conforms with previous studies which have shown the influence of variation in gastrointestinal microbiota on the immune system and on susceptibility to infection. Given that the presence or abse

Sex, gender, sexuality and orientation in biomedical research articles on intersex variations: a diachronic corpus analysis.

This article examines how biomedical research articles construct sex, gender, sexuality and sexual orientation in relation to intersex variations. We analyse 368 biomedical articles (approximately 1.3 million words) from PubMed spanning 1950-2020, comparing publications before and after the 2006 'Chicago Consensus' statement that introduced the terminology 'disorders of sex development' (DSD). Using multidimensional analysis and corpus-assisted discourse analysis, we identify key semantic domains and trace collocational patterns around terms including sex, gender, identity, sexual, and psychos

The bovine lung in biomedical research: visually guided bronchoscopy, intrabronchial inoculation and in vivo sampling techniques.

There is an ongoing search for alternative animal models in research of respiratory medicine. Depending on the goal of the research, large animals as models of pulmonary disease often resemble the situation of the human lung much better than mice do. Working with large animals also offers the opportunity to sample the same animal repeatedly over a certain course of time, which allows long-term studies without sacrificing the animals. The aim was to establish in vivo sampling methods for the use in a bovine model of a respiratory Chlamydia psittaci infection. Sampling should be performed at var

Safe and efficient methods of autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for biomedical research in cynomolgus monkeys.

We have established safe and efficient methods for autologous hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation in cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) that include regimens of supportive care to ensure survival during hematopoietic reconstitution following otherwise lethal total body irradiation. Eleven young adult cynomolgus monkeys were studied. Bone marrow was aspirated from the ilium and/or tuber ischiae after administration of recombinant human stem cell factor (SCF) and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). Using the immunomagnetic selection method, CD34+ cells were then isolat

Biomedical research in Alzheimer's disease in a Latin American developing country: challenges in the informed consent process.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a significant global health issue, impacting 50 million individuals with dementia worldwide, a number projected to triple by 2050. Although research has been conducted for decades, there is no effective prevention, treatment, or early diagnostic method for AD. Research on AD in Latin America (LatAm) faces unique challenges compared to developed countries due to socioeconomic, cultural, and infrastructural factors. While the prevalence of dementia is rapidly increasing in LatAm due to demographic shifts, the region is underrepresented in research, diagnostics and car

Fish cell lines in aquaculture and biomedical research: A global perspective on development, repositories, and multidisciplinary applications.

Fish cell lines are indispensable in vitro systems that support diverse research areas, including virology, immunology, ecotoxicology, and biomedical science. Fish represent the most species-rich vertebrate group with remarkable genomic diversity, providing valuable resources for specialised cellular models. Since the establishment of the first fish cell line (RTG-2) in 1962, the global repository has expanded to approximately 918 authenticated cell lines derived from over 211 species. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the historical progression, global repositories, and current

Anatomical MRI and CT Imaging Atlas of Lanyu Pigs: A Foundational Resource for Translational and Biomedical Research.

The Lanyu pig, a genetically unique miniature breed native to Taiwan, represents a valuable yet under-characterised large-animal model in biomedical research. Here, we present a detailed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT)-based anatomical atlas of male and female Lanyu pigs at 5-6 months of age. MRI effectively visualised brain, reproductive and abdominal structures, with T1-weighted images providing sharp anatomical boundaries and T2-weighted images enhancing cerebrospinal fluid and soft-tissue contrast. CT provided high-resolution visualisation of skeletal and card

Emesis in Rodents: Present or Absent? A Critical Review of the Evidence and Implications for the Use of Rodents in Biomedical Research.

Vomiting, a key defence against accidentally ingested toxins, is widely present in mammals. Notably, rodents (e.g., rats, mice) are generally assumed to be unable to vomit, as commonly reported over the last ~100 years, but they are used extensively for biological and particularly biomedical research. However, three recent mouse papers reported 'emetic-like' responses induced by substances that are emetics in humans. Therefore, we critically re-examined the literature underpinning this longstanding view, integrating the recent and largely overlooked historical evidence challenging this consens

Contribution of toxicologic pathologists for the safety of human health in biomedical research-past, present, and future of the JSTP.

The research field of "Toxicologic Pathology" evaluates potentially toxic chemical exposures and chemically mediated illnesses in humans and experimental animals. Comparative studies of chemical exposures between model organisms and humans are essential for the risk assessment of chemicals and human health. Here we review the development and activities of the Japanese Society of Toxicologic Pathology (JSTP) during its 37-year history. Toxicological pathology studies provide many interesting and valuable findings. Rodent cancer bioassay data demonstrate the importance of dose levels, times, and

Mistrust in biomedical research and vaccine hesitancy: the forefront challenge in the battle against COVID-19 in Italy.

Researchers have been working quickly and collaboratively for the development of vaccines against the COVID-19 virus. The effort of the scientific community in searching a vaccine for COVID-19 may be hampered by a diffused vaccine hesitancy. Two waves of data collection on representative samples of the Italian population (during the "first" and "second" phase of the Italian Covid-19 mitigation strategy) were conducted to understand citizens' perceptions and behaviors about preventive behaviors willingness to vaccine for COVID-19. Our study shows that willingness to COVID-19 vaccine is correlat

Case studies from the biomedical and health systems research activities of the Swiss Tropical Institute in Africa.

Neither high theoretical efficacy of disease control tools, nor diagnostic accuracy, nor good compliance, nor adequate coverage can lead on its own to the final goal of community effectiveness. There is a complex relationship between these factors. The different steps in the process leading to effective health care in the community are discussed on the basis of biomedical and health systems research activities of the Swiss Tropical Institute. Schistosomiasis and malaria control provide the background to problems related to the efficacy of tools. In particular, information on the trial of a mal

Plant-derived extracellular vesicles (PDEVs) in anti-aging research: A review of biomedical characteristics and therapeutic applications.

Aging is a complex, irreversible physiological process characterized by gradual deterioration of tissue structure and function, accompanied by impaired regenerative capacity, dysregulated immune homeostasis, and increased susceptibility to chronic age-related diseases (e.g., neurodegenerative disorders, metabolic syndromes, age-related skin lesions, and inflammatory bowel disease). In recent years, plant-derived extracellular vesicles (PDEVs), the lipid bilayer membrane vesicles released by plant cells, have emerged as innovative candidates for anti-aging therapy because of their inherent bioc

Considering hormones as sex- and gender-related factors in biomedical research: Challenging false dichotomies and embracing complexity.

The inclusion of sex and gender considerations in biomedicine has been increasing in light of calls from research and funding agencies, governmental bodies, and advocacy groups to direct research attention to these issues. Although the inclusion of both female and male participants is often an important element, overreliance on a female-male binary tends to oversimplify the interactions between sex- and gender-related factors and health, and runs a risk of being influenced by cultural stereotypes about sex and gender. When biomedical researchers are examining how hormones associated with gende
