The significance of birth weight discordance in twins.

The author found, among 329 twin pairs, 50 (15.2%) cases of weight discordancy reaching or exceeding 22%. Among the 50 twin pairs, there were 65 boys and 35 girls, a sex ratio of 185.7. This degree of weight discordancy appears to be unrelated to maternal age, parity and gestational length. Growth retardation of one or both fetuses was significantly more frequent (80%) among weight-discordant than among concordant one (11.1%). There were more perinatal deaths between discordant than concordant twins. Among the twins who were born with evidence of growth discordancy, there was slightly increase

Birth weight and the incidence of childhood cancer.

The relationship of weight at birth to the occurrence of childhood cancer was studied with emphasis on the influence of age at diagnosis. Birth certificates for 681 children with cancer born in Washington State were linked with cancer registry data. Among children diagnosed with cancer during the first several years of life, there was an increased proportion with a high birth weight (greater than 4,000 g). The relationship was strongest for children under 2 years of age; about twice as many of them had high birth weights. However, the relationship was not present at all in those whose cancer w

Traffic-related air pollution, preterm birth and term birth weight in the PIAMA birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal exposure to air pollution has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Few studies took into account the spatial and temporal variation of air pollution levels. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of maternal exposure to traffic-related air pollution during pregnancy on preterm birth and term birth weight using a spatio-temporal exposure model. METHODS: We estimated maternal residential exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO(2)), particulate matter (PM(2.5)) and soot during pregnancy (entire pregnancy, 1st trimester, and last month) for 3853 singleton births within the

Birth Weight and Birth Weight for Gestational Age in Relation to Risk of Hospitalization with Primary Hypertension in Children and Young Adults.

Introduction Low birth weight has been associated with an increased risk of hypertension in children. Less clear is whether high birth weight is also associated with risk. We evaluated overall and age-specific risks of primary hypertension in children and young adults associated with birth weight and birth weight for gestational age. Methods We conducted a population-based case-control study using linked Washington State birth certificate and hospital discharge data from 1987 to 2003. Cases were persons hospitalized with primary hypertension at 8-24 years of age (n = 533). Controls were random

Meconium-related ileus in very low birth weight and extremely low birth weight infants: immediate and one-year postoperative outcomes.

PURPOSE: One of the major causes of bowel obstruction in extremely premature infants is a meconium obstruction. However, there are many challenges not only in the recognition and diagnosis, but also in the management of meconium obstruction. This study aimed to find perioperative clinical features and determine the postoperative course of meconium-related ileus in very low birth weight (VLBW) and extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data of premature infants (n = 11, VLBW infnats; n = 16, ELBW infants) with a meconium-related ileus who u

Interventions to prevent hypothermia at birth in preterm and/or low birth weight infants.

BACKGROUND: Newborn admission temperature is a strong predictor of outcomes across all gestations. Hypothermia immediately after birth remains a worldwide issue and, if prolonged, is associated with harm. Keeping preterm infants warm is difficult even when recommended routine thermal care guidelines are followed in the delivery room. OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy and safety of interventions designed for prevention of hypothermia in preterm and/or low birth weight infants applied within 10 minutes after birth in the delivery room, compared with routine thermal care or any other single/com

Estimation of optimal birth weights and gestational ages for twin births in Japan.

BACKGROUND: As multiple pregnancies show a higher incidence of complications than singletons and carry a higher perinatal risk, the calculation of birth weight - and gestational age (GA)-specific perinatal mortality rates (PMR) for multiple births is necessary in order to estimate the lowest PMR for these groups. METHODS: Details of all reported twins (192,987 live births, 5,539 stillbirths and 1,830 early neonatal deaths) in Japan between 1990 and 1999 were analyzed and compared with singletons (10,021,275 live births, 63,972 fetal deaths and 16,862 early neonatal deaths) in the annual repor

Association of periodontitis with preterm birth and low birth weight: a comprehensive review.

It is estimated that six million perinatal deaths occur every year worldwide, with premature birth being the main cause. Scientific evidence has shown that there is an association between periodontal health during pregnancy and adverse outcomes of labor, although interventional studies based on the treatment of periodontitis have failed to document an impact on reducing the incidence of preterm birth (PB) or low birth weight (LBW). Two pathogenic mechanisms have been proposed to explain this association. The direct pathway is based on the presence of gram-negative anaerobic bacteremia originat

Maternal obesity, pregnancy weight gain, and birth weight and risk of colorectal cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Obesity is a well-established risk factor for CRC, and fetal or developmental origins of obesity may underlie its effect on cancer in adulthood. We examined associations of maternal obesity, pregnancy weight gain, and birth weight and CRC in adult offspring. DESIGN: The Child Health and Development Studies is a prospective cohort of women receiving prenatal care between 1959 and 1966 in Oakland, California (N=18 751 live births among 14 507 mothers). Clinical information was abstracted from mothers' medic

Weight estimation for low birth weight fetuses and macrosomic fetuses in Chinese population.

OBJECTIVE: Compared with normal birth weight fetuses (2,500-4,000 g), accurate fetal weight estimation for fetuses with low or excessive weight is considered more important for fetal compromise prediction and labor management. New formulas were developed to estimate weight for low birth weight (LBW) fetuses and macrosomic fetuses, respectively. METHODS: A total of 523 fetuses with birth weight less than 2,500 g, 652 fetuses with normal birth weight, and 239 fetuses with birth weight more than 4,000 g were included in the study. Early gestational weight gain and birth weight outcome: a Chinese population-based cohort.

BACKGROUND: Early gestational weight gain (E-GWG) plays a crucial role in fetal development. Its timing and sex-specific impacts have not been thoroughly investigated, especially in Asian populations. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, 66,291 mother-infant pairs from the Tianjin Women and Children's Health Care System were analyzed. Linear and logistic regression models were applied to examine the association between E-GWG and birth weight outcomes across BMI groups. We also analyzed the effects of E-GWG on the birth weight of infants born to pregnant women carrying male and female
