[Case-control study of factors associated with low birth weight at the Kingasani Hospital Center, Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo)].

INTRODUCTION: low birth weight is considered one of the most important indicators for the survivability of a newborn and for a higher risk of morbidity, perinatal mortality and infant mortality. The purpose of this study was to analyse factors associated with low birth weight at the Kingasani Hospital in Kinshasa. METHODS: we conducted a retrospective case-control study. The data about the information of the parturients and their children born from 1st January to 31st December 2016 were collected from the maternity register of the Kingasani Hospital Center. In this study 458 cases (less than

Pre-discharge growth pattern of very low birth weight infants (VLBW): A 5 year single center experience.

BACKGROUND: Very low birth weight infants born prematurely are at greater risk for growth delays that lead to Ex-utero Growth Restriction (EUGR) during vulnerable periods of organ structural and functional development. There is considerable evidence that early growth failure has adverse effects on long term neurodevelopment in children which often persists into adulthood. METHODS: This is a single-center cross-sectional study on live newborn infants with birth weight ranges from 500 to 1500 grams (VLBW) and gestational age (GA) between 24-32 weeks who were admitted to NICU at KAMC-Jeddah over

A single-center experience with kidney transplantation in the verteberal, anal, cardiac, tracheoesophageal, renal, and limb birth detects (VACTERL) association.

VACTERL association is a nonrandom association of birth defects in vertebral, anal, cardiac, tracheoesophageal, renal, and limb structures. Renal anomalies are observed in ∼60%-90% of VACTERL patients. We present 3 cases to demonstrate the clinical and surgical challenges that these patients present for renal transplantation. One pediatric and 2 adult patients with the VACTERL association were transplanted at a single center; their follow-up times were 6 years, 4 years, and 3 months. Only 1 of them had a suitable native bladder to receive the kidney graft; the other 2 required bladder augmenta

Labor Companion Support, Women-Centered Care, and Childbirth Preparation in Relation to Psychological Birth Trauma: A Cross-Sectional SEM Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Psychological birth trauma (PBT) is a significant maternal health concern characterized by fear, helplessness, and loss of control during childbirth. While continuous labor companion support, women-centered care, and childbirth readiness are individually associated with improved maternal outcomes, their cross-sectional statistical association with reported levels of PBT remain underexplored. This study aimed to examine the associations between these variables among postnatal women in Ethiopia. METHODS: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 440 postnat

Trends in short-term outcomes of very low birth weight infants from a single center in Shanghai from 2013 to 2023.

BACKGROUND: Very low birth weight infants (VLBWI) are vulnerable to serious complications. We aim to describe the short-term outcomes of VLBWI in a single center during 2013-2023, providing the basis for clinical disease management. METHODS: A retrospective study of VLBWI admitted to a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2023 was conducted to analyze trends of mortality and major morbidities over the 11-year period. Infants were divided into two subgroups according to birth weight (BW): <1,000 and 1,000-1,500 g. Major morbidities were defined as

Greater PGT-A utilization in IVF clinics does not improve live birth rates but relates to IVF center ownership: a preliminary report.

This study aims to assess whether increased utilization for preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) relates to improved live birth rates in IVF and whether IVF clinic ownership relates to PGT-A utilization. In a retrospective cohort study involving > 90% of US IVF clinics reporting to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stratified for ages (< 35, 35-37, 38-40, 41-42, and ≥ 43 years), and with reference point cycle start, we investigated whether PGT-A utilization related to live birth rates and ownership format as either physician-, academic/hospital/military, or

Ultrasonographic placental edematous changes as predictive markers of unplanned preterm birth in post-Fontan pregnancies: A single-center observational study.

AIM: Fontan surgery is a palliative procedure commonly performed for functional single-ventricle heart diseases. Fontan circulation is characterized by elevated central venous pressure and low cardiac output. It causes placental hypoxia, which could lead to poor obstetric outcomes. During post-Fontan pregnancies, ultrasonography may detect abnormal appearance of the placenta. We have focused on higher incidences of unexpected onset of labor when this ultrasonographic finding is present. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether this finding could be an indicator of premature delivery befo

Outcomes of low-risk birth care during the Covid-19 pandemic: A cohort study from a tertiary care center in Lithuania.

According to the World Health Organization, midwife-led care is the most appropriate and cost-effective type of perinatal care. As the Covid-19 pandemic with its drastic changes and challenges for the health systems and the medical staff made large adjustments to the healthcare delivery system, midwife-led care became an even more important supportive tool in maintaining unnecessary interventions. This retrospective cohort study aims to compare the outcomes of midwife-led care and team-led care in low-risk births between the Covid-19 pandemic and non-Covid-19 pandemic period. The total studied

Prevalence and Outcome of Operative Vaginal Delivery among Mothers Who Gave Birth at Jimma University Medical Center, Southwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Operative vaginal deliveries (OVD) are vaginal deliveries accomplished with the use of a vacuum device or forceps. If it is technically feasible and can be safely accomplished, termination of second stage labor by operative vaginal delivery is indicated in any condition threatening the mother or fetus that is likely to be relieved by delivery. Hence, the objective of this study is to assess the prevalence, common indication, outcome, and associated factors of operative vaginal delivery among mothers who gave birth in Jimma University Medical Center (JUMC). METHOD: A facility-based

Disparities in Exclusive Human Milk Feeding and Unintended Formula Supplementation Among Infants Discharged Following Birth at an Academic Medical Center.

BACKGROUND: The mitigation of existing disparities in human milk intake is a shared responsibility. Health systems have emphasized antenatal decision making to increase the proportion of infants that receive Exclusive Human Milk (EHM). However, our recent focus group reported that inadequate communication and other systemic barriers were contributing to unintended formula supplementation. METHODS: To explore the influence of sociodemographic factors on EHM intake, we analyzed records for 10,214 newborns discharged from our medical center. RESULTS: While race or ethnicity and prenatal EHM int
