Bite Caused by the Assassin Bug Zelus Fabricius, 1803 (Hemiptera; Heteroptera: Reduviidae) in a Human.

A 47-y-old man was bitten by a reduviid bug from the Zelus Fabricius, 1803 genus, which was hidden inside a rubber-coated boot. The bite caused immediate and sharp pain, followed by local edema and constant pruritus for 15 d. Pain and fever within the first 24 h were managed with analgesics as needed, and resolution was complete and without sequelae after 21 d.

Molecular Detection of Tick-Borne Pathogens in Humans with Tick Bites and Erythema Migrans, in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne diseases are the most prevalent vector-borne diseases in Europe. Knowledge on the incidence and clinical presentation of other tick-borne diseases than Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis is minimal, despite the high human exposure to these pathogens through tick bites. Using molecular detection techniques, the frequency of tick-borne infections after exposure through tick bites was estimated. METHODS: Ticks, blood samples and questionnaires on health status were collected from patients that visited their general practitioner with a tick bite or erythema migran

Survey of animal bite injuries and their management for an estimate of human rabies deaths in N'Djaména, Chad.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the annual human rabies incidence as a baseline prior to mass dog vaccination campaigns in N'Djaména, Chad. METHODS: Survey of animal bites, involving 50% of all healthcare providers in N'Djaména, from September 2008 to April 2009. Of 86 people exposed to a suspected rabid animal, 50% received post-exposure vaccination and a further 8% had their wound cleaned. We estimated annual incidence of bites from suspected rabid animals of 12.9/100,000 and an incidence of 0.7 human rabies deaths/100,000, resulting in 7 estimated deaths (95% confidence interval 4-10 deaths) per ye

Salivary antigen SP32 is the immunodominant target of the antibody response to Phlebotomus papatasi bites in humans.

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) due to Leishmania major is highly prevalent in Tunisia and is transmitted by a hematophagous vector Phlebotomus papatasi (P. papatasi). While probing for a blood meal, the sand fly injects saliva into the host's skin, which contains a variety of compounds that are highly immunogenic. We recently showed that the presence of anti-saliva antibodies was associated with an enhanced risk for leishmaniasis and identified the immunodominant salivary protein of Phlebotomus papatasi as a protein of approximately 30 kDa. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:

A case of human bite by an 11-year old HIV positive girl in a paediatrics ward.

Biting is a possible mode of transmission of HIV infection, though the risk of such transmission is believed to be low. Children infected with HIV are at risk of psychological complications as a result of direct or indirect effects associated with the disease. We report the case of an 11 year old HIV positive girl with clinical stage IV disease, who was involved in multiple disputes while on admission on the ward. During one of the disputes she inflicted a deep bite injury on a 10-year old boy, HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) was commenced 6 hours after the bite and he has remained HIV neg

Induction of asymptomatic HBeAG carrier state in a patient with Down's syndrome following human bite.

A 56-year-old Japanese male patient with Down's syndrome was bitten by a hepatitis B envelope antigen (HBeAg) carrier and become an asymptomatic HBeAg carrier without seroconversion. His mitogen response of T cells was poor compared with that of healthy controls. An impaired T cell response to hepatitis B virus infection may be responsible for the HBeAg carrier with Down's syndrome.

Human fight-bite injuries of the hand. A study of 100 cases within 18 months.

100 consecutive patients whose finger had been bitten by another person, or who had cut it on a tooth in a fight, have been studied. 82 healed completely but 18 eventually needed amputation. Early and thorough debridement is required, plus a suitable mixture of antibiotics. Once infection is established in bone or tendon sheath, amputation is often needed, but most infected joints can be saved.

Increasing dog bites in humans: Indoor and outdoor risk factors and spatiotemporal patterns in Chile.

Dog bites pose a serious global public health problem, leading to at least 14,000 annual deaths globally, primarily from rabies, and contributing to physical injuries, psychological trauma, transmission to other zoonotic diseases, and substantial economic costs. This study aimed to estimate the spatiotemporal distribution of dog bite incidents involving humans in Chile and to analyze the risk factors associated with bites in indoor and outdoor environments. We analyzed data from the Registry System of Biting Animals (SIRAM) in Chile between 2019 and 2024. To examine spatiotemporal patterns of

Post-mortem rodent scavenging mimicking canine bite injuries on human corpse in Italy.

Post-mortem vertebrate scavenging may produce tissue alterations that mimic ante-mortem trauma, representing a potential source of error in forensic interpretation. We report a case of extensive soft tissue loss in the face and the anterior part of the neck of a human corpse, initially attributed to a canine attack. A multidisciplinary approach, including scene investigation, autopsy, and entomological and histological analyses, was applied to determine the origin of the lesions and reconstruct the scene. First-instar larvae of Calliphora vicina (Diptera: Calliphoridae) were collected and used

Reviving the Chondrocutaneous Conchal Transposition Flap for Auricular Reconstruction After Human Bite Injury.

Mammalian bites account for 1% of annual emergency room visits and present distinct issues when they involve regions such as the ear. Human bite injuries may cause atypical tissue damage and elevate the risk of infection, thereby compromising ear repair. Diverse surgical methodologies aim to rehabilitate the ear's functionality and appearance. The Orticochea flap, using conchal transposition flaps, is recognized as a prominent single-stage approach for auricular defect reconstruction. A 22-year-old man presented with a human bite injury that led to the total amputation of the upper auricle of

Plasmodium falciparum infection in humans and mosquitoes influence natural Anopheline biting behavior and transmission.

The human infectious reservoir of Plasmodium falciparum is governed by transmission efficiency during vector-human contact and mosquito biting preferences. Understanding biting bias in a natural setting can help target interventions to interrupt transmission. In a 15-month cohort in western Kenya, we detected P. falciparum in indoor-resting Anopheles and human blood samples by qPCR and matched mosquito bloodmeals to cohort participants using short-tandem repeat genotyping. Using risk factor analyses and discrete choice models, we assessed mosquito biting behavior with respect to parasite trans

Characterization of Anopheles gambiae D7 salivary proteins as markers of human-mosquito bite contact.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is transmitted when infected Anopheles mosquitoes take a blood meal. During this process, the mosquitoes inject a cocktail of bioactive proteins that elicit antibody responses in humans and could be used as biomarkers of exposure to mosquito bites. This study evaluated the utility of IgG responses to members of the Anopheles gambiae D7 protein family as serological markers of human-vector contact. METHODS: The D7L2, D7r1, D7r2, D7r3, D7r4 and SG6 salivary proteins from An. gambiae were expressed as recombinant antigens in Escherichia coli. Antibody responses to the salivar

Epidemiology of Dog Bite Incidents in Chile: Factors Related to the Patterns of Human-Dog Relationship.

Dog bites are one of the main public health problems. They produce important consequences for those who suffer them (physical and psychological injuries, secondary infections, sequelae, risk of transmission of zoonoses and surgeries, among others). The objective of this study was to characterize epidemiologically the incidents of bites in Chile and the patterns of human-dog relationship involved. The records analyzed in this article were obtained from bitten patients who attended the main public health facilities in Chile during the period 17 September 2017 and 17 September 2018: In the period

Self-inflicted human bite followed by hand necrotizing fasciitis in an adult with Down syndrome.

Adults with Down syndrome are more prone to develop intellectual, physical, and psychological disorders than their pediatric counterparts. It is pertinent to prevent the occurrence of severe complications in these patients. This case demonstrates the importance of support, regular follow-up, and wound management in self-care of adults with Down syndrome.

Seropositivity to Midichloria mitochondrii (order Rickettsiales) as a marker to determine the exposure of humans to tick bite.

Ixodes ricinus is the most common tick species parasitizing humans in Europe, and the main vector of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the causative agent of Lyme disease in the continent. This tick species also harbors the endosymbiont Midichloria mitochondrii, and there is strong evidence that this bacterium is inoculated into the vertebrate host during the blood meal. A high proportion of tick bites remains unnoticed due to rarity of immediate symptoms, implying the risk of occult tick-borne infections in turn a potential risk factor for the onset of chronic-degenerative diseases. Since suit

Human bite injuries to the head and neck: current trends and management protocols in England and Wales.

INTRODUCTION: Human bite injuries can be challenging in their presentation to the examining physician. In a study by Merchant et al., 18% of patients presenting with a human bite injury had suffered wounds to the head and neck region. Current trends in their initial management at presentation to emergency departments throughout England and Wales will be discussed in this paper. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A postal survey was sent out to 100 A&E lead clinicians. This was followed up by telephone enquiries to improve the response rate. The collated results of the survey were entered onto a spreadshee

A gB/CD3 bispecific BiTE antibody construct for targeting Human Cytomegalovirus-infected cells.

Bispecific T cell engager (BiTE) antibody constructs are successfully used as cancer therapeutics. We hypothesized that this treatment strategy could also be applicable for therapy of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection, since HCMV-encoded proteins are abundantly expressed on the surface of infected cells. Here we show that a BiTE antibody construct directed against HCMV glycoprotein B (gB) and CD3 efficiently triggers T cells to secrete IFN-γ and TNF upon co-culture with fibroblasts infected with HCMV strain AD169, Towne or Toledo. Titration of gB expression levels in non-infected cells co

Factors associated with tick bites and pathogen prevalence in ticks parasitizing humans in Georgia, USA.

BACKGROUND: The incidence and emergence of tick-borne diseases has increased dramatically in the United States during the past 30 years, yet few large-scale epidemiological studies have been performed on individuals bitten by ticks. Epidemiological information, including disease development, may provide valuable information regarding effectiveness of tick bite prevention education, pathogen transmission, human-disease dynamics, and potential implications for under reporting of tick-borne diseases. METHODS: Ticks found attached to Georgia residents were submitted for identification and polymer
